quality of life: Encyclopedia II - Video game developer - Quality of life

Video game development in the United States is performed in an extremely casual business environment. T-shirts and sandals are common work attire, and work hours are usually flexible; many developers start the work day at 10:00 AM, though employees usually work at least a full 40 hours a week. Employees are paid fairly well for what seems to outsiders to be light work. Many developers have some sort of profit-sharing plan to reward their employees. < ...

quality of life: Encyclopedia II - Walter A. Shewhart - Later work

From the late 1930s onwards, Shewhart's interests expanded out from industrial quality to wider concerns in science and statistical inference. The title of his second book Statistical Method from the Viewpoint of Quality Control (1939) asks the audacious question: What can statistical practice, and science in general, learn from the experience of industrial quality control? Shewhart's approach to statistics was radically different from that of many of his contemporaries. He possessed a strong operationalist outlook, larg ...

quality of life: Encyclopedia II - Headcrab - Half-Life 2 headcrab variations

New to Half-Life 2 are two previously unseen varieties of headcrabs. The first variation is known as a fast headcrab, having longer, thinner, almost spider-like legs, which allows it move much faster, as well as sharper talons in and around its mouth. This type appears to produce leaner zombies, stripped of their outer skin and some body tissue (revealing large parts of the victim's skeleton) along with the standard elongated claws. These zombies are astonishingly fast, ag ...

quality of life: Encyclopedia II - Headcrab - Features

Headcrab - Physical description. Although small, slow-moving, and relatively weak on its own, the headcrab has the ability to quickly leap long distances using its hind legs, while tilting upwards to face its mouth towards a target, inflicting minor injury with its claws, legs, and teeth. Its main goal, however, is to attach itself onto an appropriate host body. Headcrabs are often heard making a variety of vocalisations. When they are not hunting, headcrabs usually emit squeaks and fairly quiet, repetitiv ...

quality of life: Encyclopedia II - Walter A. Shewhart - Work on industrial quality

Following a brief spell as an academic, in 1918 Shewhart joined the Western Electric Company, a manufacturer of telephony hardware for the Bell Telephone Company. Bell Telephone’s engineers had been working to improve the reliability of their transmission systems. Because amplifiers and other equipment had to be buried underground, there was a business need to reduce the frequency of failures and repairs. Bell Telephone had already realised the importance of reducing variation in a manufacturing process. Moreover, they had realised that continual process-adjustment in reaction to n ...

quality of life: Encyclopedia II - Walter A. Shewhart - Influence

In 1938 his work came to the attention of physicists W. Edwards Deming and Raymond T. Birge. The two had been deeply intrigued by the issue of measurement error in science and had published a landmark paper in Reviews of Modern Physics in 1934. On reading of Shewhart's insights, they wrote to the journal to wholly recast their approach in the terms that Shewhart advocated. The encounter began a long collaboration between Shewhart and Deming that involved work on productivity during World War II and Deming's championing of Shewh ...

In his obituary for the American Statistical Association, Deming wrote of Shewhart: As a man, he was gentle, genteel, never ruffled, never off his dignity. He knew disappointment and frustration, through failure of many writers in mathematical statistics to understand his point of view. He was founding editor of the Wiley Series in Mathematical Statistics, a role that he maintained for twenty years, always championing freedom of ...

quality of life: Encyclopedia II - Fountain - Water quality issues

There is a need for good water quality in contemporary fountains, regardless of their avowed intended use. Regardless of the fact that some fountains are designed and built not as bathing fountains, but are rather used simply as architectural decor, people will often drink from, bathe or wash their hands in any fountain. Additionally, fountain spray can contain legionella bacteria and has been linked to legionnaires' disease outbreaks. Therefore, minimum water quality standards are necessary, regardless of intended use. Guidelines have been developed for control of legionella in ornamental ...

quality of life: Encyclopedia II - Bartolomeo Cristofori - Life

The available source materials on Cristofori's life include his birth and death records, two wills, the bills he submitted to his employers, and a single interview done by Scipione Maffei. From the latter, we have both Maffei's notes and the published journal article. Cristofori was born in Padua in the Republic of Venice. Nothing is known of his early life. A tale is told that he served as an apprentice to the great violin maker Nicolò Amati, based on the appearance in a 1680 census record of a "Christofaro Bartolomei" living in Ama ...

quality of life: Encyclopedia II - Fountain - Fountain of life

Christian allegory made much use of the concept of the fountain, specifically the Fountain of Life, associated with the rebirth that was intended to be experienced at the Baptismal font. The Fountain of Life appears in Christian illuminated manuscripts of Late Antiquity, and elaborate Gothic fountains formed centerpieces for exclosed gardens. An offshoot of the Fountain of Life was the legend of the Fountain of Youth, which Hernando de Soto sought in Florida. From the Fountain of Youth one can drink ...

quality of life: Encyclopedia II - Bartolomeo Cristofori - Cristofori's pianos

The total number of pianos built by Cristofori is unknown. Only three survive today, all dating from the 1720's. A 1720 instrument is located in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. The original compass was FF,GG,AA-c³ compass (54 notes). The case has been shortened, and the soundboard is from a 1938 restoration. [1] A 1722 instrument is in the Museo Nazionale degli Strumenti Musicali in Rome. It has a range of four octaves (C-c³) and includes an "una corda" stop; see below. A 1726 instrument is in the Musikinstrumenten-Museum of Leipzig U ...

quality of life: Encyclopedia II - Bartolomeo Cristofori - The initial reception of the piano

Our knowledge of how Cristofori's invention was initially received comes in part from the article published in 1711 by Scipione Maffei, an influential literary figure, in the Giornale de'letterati d'Italia of Venice. Maffei said that "some professionals have not given this invention all the applause it merits," and goes on to say that its sound was felt to be too "soft" and "dull"--Cristofori was unable to make his instrument as loud as the competing harpsichord. Yet Maffei himself was an enthusiast for the piano, and the instrument did gra ...

quality of life: Encyclopedia II - Fountain - Design

In modern fountains the traditional gravitational pressure from an unseen reservoir at a higher level is not always practical. In many circumstances fountains obtain their water from an internally recycling system. This closed, recirculating system must still be filled at the start from the local water supply system and also topped up through its life to offset the effects of evaporation. Allowance must also be made to handle overflow in the case of heavy rain. The pressure that causes water to move through the fountain may be produced instead by a motor-driven (often electric) pump. "Static head" is useful to quantify t ...

quality of life: Encyclopedia II - Fountain - History

Early fountains depended on the gravity flow of water, from a spring or from an aqueduct supplied from a distant and higher source of water. Hellenistic hydraulic engineers employed great originality in designing fountains, where the water pressure might be employed to animate automata and water organs. Other early fountains were geometrically regularized springs, developed in the classic Persian garden. In the 16th century elaborate fountain displays were garden features of Mannerist gardens of Central It ...

quality of life: Encyclopedia II - Fountain - Animated fountains

Animated fountains often use laminar jets that provide water that moves like ping pong balls in animation, so that it breaks up, as the height varies, and the behaviour of each jet operates independently with up to 5Hz modulation frequency 1/5sec, so that the water packets collide with themselves. For example, the such fountains can spit up one ball of water which then explodes, showering people with a fine mist. A musical fountain is a type of fountain that uses laser and harmonics principles to create thr ...

In Islam a fountain is the name of the place in the Mosque where worshippers can wash before Prayer. A water fountain is designed to provide drinking water and has a basin arrangement with either continuously running water or a tap. Modern indoor drinking fountains may incorporate filters to remove impurities from the water and chillers to reduce its temperature. quality of life: Encyclopedia II - Fountain - Fountains for celebration

University of Albany has a "Fountain Day" every year which is a day in which the university can come together to celebrate the coming of spring, and the near-end of the semester. This brings huge crowds celebrating together in the fountains, and creates something close in spirit to an urban beach. Fountain day is a school sponsored event, initiated by the Human Awareness Program (HAP), in 1979, so students and faculty could break down the barriers that separate them. In 2004 Fountain Day was a media nightmare with drunk students and m ...

In July 1997, an outbreak of Cryptosporidiosis was connected to an ornamental fountain at the Minnesota Zoo, which did not have proper filtration and water treatment. Children played in fountains and swallowed water, and spurted the water out of their mouths to mimic the way nozzles in the fountain spurted the water. It was therefore necessary to put a fence around the fountain to keep people away. In the United States fountain operators and owners are legally liable for failure to either fence-in fountains, or to properly filter, chl ...
