Prosperity theology: Encyclopedia II - Criticisms of Charismatic and Pentecostal belief - The nature of criticism

Pentecostal and Charismatic Christians and organizations have, either fairly or unfairly, been subjected to numerous criticisms by both those within the Christian faith, as well as by those in the wider world. The debate between Charismatic and non-Charismatic Christians occurs at several levels. One fundamendal theological question is usually whether the charismata described in the New Testament and apparently widely used by Jesus, the Apostles and early church leaders were a special dispensation for New Testament times only, ...

Prosperity theology: Cultivating Positive Emotions

Compassion: Cultivating Positive Emotions

All major traditions in the world agree that negative emotions cause both physical and mental suffering. To be happy and free of suffering we need to cultivate positive attributes like compassion, generosity and loving-kindness. Prosperity theology: Encyclopedia - Criticisms of Charismatic and Pentecostal belief

Charismatic is an umbrella term used to describe Christians who believe that the manifestations of the Holy Spirit seen in the first century Christian Church, such as glossolalia, healing and miracles, are available to contemporary Christians and ought to be experienced and practised today. The word charismatic is derived from the Greek word charis (meaning a grace or a gift) which is the term used in the Bible to des ...

Prosperity theology: Encyclopedia - Word of faith

The Word of Faith movement or word-faith theology developed in the latter half of the 20th century in mainly Pentecostal and Charismatic churches. Its beginnings trace back to an early twentieth century evangelical pastor and author E.W. Kenyon (1867-1948), who preached that God would award financial and other gifts if the faithful would ask. Kenyon coined the phrase, "What I confess, I possess." Kenneth E. Hagin is often credited with being the father of the modern Word of Faith movement, using a four-part formula he claimed to have receiv ...

Prosperity theology: We Know too Much, Feel too Little

Emotions: We Know too Much, Feel too Little

A telephone operator in a small town would receive a daily call from a man who asked for the exact time. Finally, the operator asked him why he called every day. "Because", he said, "I am the man responsible for blowing the whistle at noon each day." "Well, that's strange", the operator replied: "Every day, exactly at noon, I set my clock by your whistle".

Individual lives cannot be compartmentalised; through our actions, we impact each other more than we realise. It follows that there is a profound relationship between the individual and the universe. So it's important for us to understand one another better. One way is to learn more about emotions, a key to understanding human behaviour and relationships.

Prosperity Consciousness: Bridges or Walls - You Choose

Life continually brings to us more gifts than we can accept and acknowledge, more than we can treasure with thankful hearts. As we pursue the lonely journey through our own life experience, we carry with us the potential to reach heights of excellence. It is our vision of life that matters. We can either paralyse ourselves or set ourselves free. We can choose to open doors to a new life or we can choose to close them forever. We can either build walls or bridges in our life. The choice is ours.

See also: Cambridge Declaration A number of critics of Pentecostal / Charismatic beliefs have established themselves in Discernment Ministries to promote their theological viewpoints. The main areas of criticism are outlined below. Please note that the use of the term Evangelical here refers to those Christians who claim to be Born-again but do not hold to many Pentecostal or Charismatic beliefs, rather than the broader common definition. These Evangelicals are likely to come from a Reformed or Dispensationalist point of view. ...

Prosperity theology: Encyclopedia II - Hillsong Church - Controversies

Over its twenty year history Hillsong has come under scrutiny and a number of controversies have arisen. Prosperity Teaching, as outlined in Houston's book You Need More Money, is allegedly one of the hallmarks of the church's teaching. Essentially the theology teaches that God wants his people to be wealthy and prosperous, so they have more money to help others, and has given them the ability to "unleash" this power from within. Many Christians, including Tim Costello (the brother of Hillsong conference addressee and Fe ...

Prosperity theology: Encyclopedia II - Lakewood Church - Criticisms

As a charismatic/Pentecostal church, Lakewood is subject to regular criticism regarding its views on faith healing and the prosperity gospel. In addition, other criticisms of Lakewood and Joel Osteen have included: 1) a style of preaching that avoids theology or controversial topics (referred to in some circles as "Christianity light" or "cotton candy Christianity"); 2) a board of directors consisting completely of Osteen family members (this disqualifies Lakewood from becoming a member of the ECFA); and 3) the Osteen's lifestyle (Joel and h ...

Prosperity theology: Encyclopedia II - Reformation in Switzerland - Thirty Years' War

During the Thirty Years' War, Switzerland was a relative "oasis of peace and prosperity" (Grimmelshausen) in war-torn Europe. The cantons had concluded numerous mercenary contracts and defence alliances with partners on all sides. Some of these contracts neutralized each other, which allowed the confederation to remain neutral. Despite the cantons' religious differences, the Tagsatzung developed a strong consensus against any direct military involvement. The confederacy did not allow any foreign army to cross its territory: the alpine ...
