* A Prison of Our Own Making

Every one of us is pre-programmed, in accordance with the culture, family, society or religion we are born into and grow up with. Most of us are indifferent to the fact that we operate with little awareness. So we end up living in a self-made prison.

We have to learn the art of inner separation and not allow inner thoughts and attitudes of negativity to eat into our lives. Negative, ignorant, addictive, narrow, foolish 'I's eat our life forces just as rats eat crops. Some 'I's in us are our friends and some, our enemies. To recognise and de-identify ourselves with the negative 'I's is 'inner separation'.

* Greed Is a Threat to Civilisation

On his release from prison, the great Nelson Mandela said: "Together we live in a global neighbourhood and it is not to the long-term benefit of any if there are islands of wealth in a sea of poverty. We need a globalisation of responsibility as well.

Above all that is the challenge of the new century." Mandela was absolutely right. The evolution of technology down the linear, reductionist path, which defines only that which is physically quantifiable, has jeopardised our eco-system, if not human civilisation.

* Encyclopedia - County jail

A county jail is a place of detention for people awaiting trial, or for those who have been convicted of a misdemeanor and are serving a sentence of less than one year. County jails are, in a sense, mini prisons run by individual counties. Some have different wings for certain types of offenders, and have work programs for inmates that demonstrate good behavior. Jails can be as dangerous as state prisons, particularly for women. Inmates held at jails can make weapons out of almost anything, requiring that the jailers be alert and cautious at all times. County jails do not house ...

* Spiritual - TheosophyDictionary on Thesmophoria

Thesmophoria (Greek) [from thesmophoros law-giving]

A Mystery festival celebrated at Athens, Abdera, and possibly also in Sparta, in honor of Demeter-Thesmophoros, as goddess of justice, law, and order. During its celebration, prisoners were released, the law courts of the city-state were closed, and the senate did not meet. Celebrated by women only, it took place on three days, beginning with the 11th of Pyanepsion -- October 24-26.

The first day was called Anodos (the way up), but also Kathodos (the way down, the descent). It celebrated with a great processional the return of Demeter with her daughter Persephone from the underworld, and as Kathodos, her descent into it. The second day was Kalligeneia (mother of beauty); and third was Nesteia (the fast), passed by the women in silence and fasting, sitting on the ground to celebrate Demeter''s sorrow. There is no information as to the rites of the second day, and nothing is actually known of the private ritual of any of the three days.

* Spiritual Theosophical Dictionary on Cagliostro

Cagliostro. A famous Adept, whose real name is claimed (by his enemies) to have been Joseph Balsamo. He was a native of Palermo, and studied under some mysterious foreigner of whom little has been ascertained. His accepted history is too well known to need repetition, and his real history has never been told.

His fate was that of every human being who proves that he knows more than do his fellow- creatures; he was "stoned to death" by persecutions, lies, and infamous accusations, and yet he was the friend and adviser of the highest and mightiest of every land he visited.

He was finally tried and sentenced in Rome as a heretic, and was said to have died during his confinement in a State prison.
(See " Mesmer".) Yet his end was not utterly undeserved, as he had been untrue to his vows in some respects, had fallen from his state of chastity and yielded to ambition and selfishness.

* Indian Hindu Dictionary on Bal Gangadar Tilak

Bal Gangadar Tilak (1856-1920): One of India''s first prominent nationalist leaders. His efforts towards India''s total independence earned him the title of Lokamanya, “Respected of the people.”His efforts were rewarded by a term of six years (1897-1902) in British prisons in India. He developed the ideas of passive resistance, boycotting of British goods, organization of mass opinion, and other political tactics that were later adopted by Mahatma Gandhi. Because of his words, “Swaraj [self-rule] is my birthright,”he has been called the Patrick Henry of India.

* Spiritual Theosophical Dictionary on Naraka

Naraka (Sanskrit). In the popular conception, a hell, a "prison under earth". The hot and cold hells, each eight in number, are simply emblems of the globes of our septenary chain, with the addition of the "eighth sphere" supposed to be located in the moon.

This is a transparent blind, as these "hells" are called vivifying hells because, as explained, any being dying in one is immediately born in the second, then in the third, and so on; life lasting in each 500 years (a blind on the number of cycles and reincarnations).

As these hells constitute one of the six gati (conditions of sentient existence), and as people are said to be reborn in one or the other according to their Karmic merits or demerits, the blind becomes self-evident. Moreover, these Narakas are rather purgatories than hells, since release from each is possible through the prayers and intercessions of priests for a consideration, just as in the Roman Catholic Church, which seems to have copied the Chinese-ritualism in this pretty closely. As said before, esoteric philosophy traces every hell to life on earth, in one or another form of sentient existence.
