Prime Minister: Encyclopedia II - Lee Hsien Loong - Prime Minister

On August 12, 2004, Lee Hsien Loong succeeded Goh Chok Tong as Prime Minister, relinquishing his Chairmanship of the Monetary Authority of Singapore to Goh Chok Tong in the process. Lee officiated the opening of the newly-restored Malay Heritage Centre in Singapore on June 5, 2005. The opening was witnessed by Yaacob Ibrahim, the Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs. [1] Lee sought security support on the Straits of Malacca in the wake of pirate attacks on ships that pass through the Strait of Malacca. Approximately 50,000 ship ...

Prime Minister: Encyclopedia II - Yoshiro Mori - Prime Minister

Mori's predecessor, Keizo Obuchi, suffered a stroke on April 2, 2000 and was unable to continue this office. Therefore, Mori, who was the secretary general of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), became the prime minister. His position in Office was marred with a long list of faux-pas, unpopular decisions, PR mistakes and verbal gaffes: One of the earliest occurred at Obuchi's funeral, when Mori failed to clap and bow properly before Obuchi's shrine, an important portion of the Buddhist funeral rite. The other world leader ...

Prime Minister: Encyclopedia II - Brian Faulkner - Prime Minister

Brian Faulkner - Promising beginnings. Faulkner finally achieved what history has deemed was his political goal in March 1971 when he was elected leader of the Ulster Unionist Party and Prime Minister. His year in this office was a disaster both for himself and for the UUP's 50-year hold on power in the region. In his initial innovative approach to government, he gave a non-unionist, David Bleakley, a former Northern Ireland Labour Party (NILP) MP, a position in his Cabinet as Minister of Community Relatio ...

Prime Minister: Encyclopedia II - Golda Meir - Prime Minister

After Levi Eshkol died suddenly on February 26, 1969, the party chose her to succeed him as Prime Minister. Meir came out of retirement to take office on March 17 and served in that role until 1974. When Meir became Prime Minister, Israel was brimming with confidence, having won a decisive victory over the Arabs and capturing large areas of territory in the Six Day War. Nonetheless, Meir had to deal with the continuing Egyptian shelling of Israeli forces along the Suez Canal in the War of Attrition. See also:

Prime Minister: Encyclopedia II - Pedro Santana Lopes - Prime Minister

Santana Lopes' leadership was made difficult by a number of inherited economic and political problems. When the PSD had first taken power, the country’s economy was in a poor state, with a rising government-spending deficit. Partially because of policies focused on public expenditure of the previous governments (led by Aníbal Cavaco Silva (PSD) and António Guterres of the Socialist Party) and the early 2000s recession had left the country's economy in a poor state. According to the Economist Intelligence Unit on 11th January 2005, ...

Prime Minister: Encyclopedia II - Arvid Horn - Prime Minister

He was elected lantmarskalk, for the Caps at the Riksdag of 1720, and contributed, on the resignation of Ulrika Eleonora, to the election of Frederick of Hesse as king of Sweden, whose first act was to restore to him to the Privy Council and as President of its Chancellery, in effect as Prime Minister. For the next eighteen years he so absolutely controlled both the foreign and the domestic affairs of Sweden that the period between 1720 and 1738 has well been called the Horn period. His services to his country were indeed inestimable. His st ...

Prime Minister: Encyclopedia II - Richard Bedford Bennett 1st Viscount Bennett - Prime Minister

He was elected Prime Minister of Canada in 1930, defeating William Lyon Mackenzie King. His election occurred just as the worst depression of the century was hitting the country and the rest of the world. Of course, he was no more responsible for the Great Depression than his precedessor. Bennett tried to fight the depression by expanding trade within the British Empire and imposing tariffs for imports from outside the Empire, promising that his measures would blast Canadian exports into world markets. However, his success was limited, and his ...

Prime Minister: Encyclopedia II - Morihiro Hosokawa - Prime Minister

In the summer of 1993, in a change very few had foreseen even a year earlier, the LDP lost its majority in the Diet for the first time in thirty-eight years and was replaced by an eight-party coalition government which promised a series of social, political, and economic reforms. Excluding the JCP, the coalition was backed by all of the former opposition parties, which included the newly formed JNP, the Socialist Party, the Japan Renewal Party, Komeito, the Democratic Socialist Party, the Social Democratic Party, and the New Party Sakigake. Hosokawa, one of the major voices in forming ...

Prime Minister: Encyclopedia II - George William Forbes - Prime Minister

As Prime Minister, Forbes, described as "apathetic and fatalistic", reacted to events but showed little vision or purpose. Opponents also criticised him for relying too much on the advice of his friends. However, the depression years proved a difficult time for many governments around the world, and his defenders claim that he did the best job possible in the adverse circumstances of the Great Depression. The Forbes government began to show signs of instability when the Labour Party withdrew its support. Labour expressed dissatisfacti ...

Prime Minister: Encyclopedia II - José María Aznar - Prime Minister

After a hard fought campaign, focusing on the corruption scandals that plagued Felipe González\'s Socialist government, Aznar won the March 3, 1996 general election with 37.6% of the vote. With 154 of the 350 seats (PSOE had 141) Aznar had to reach agreements with three nationalist parties: Convergence and Unity (Catalan), Basque Nationalist Party and Canary Islands Coalition, in order to govern. He was voted Prime Minister with 181 votes in the Cortes general on May 4 and sworn next day by King Juan Carlos I. Prime Minister: Encyclopedia II - Robert Muldoon - Prime Minister

Upon becoming prime minister, Muldoon became Minister of Finance as well, concentrating enormous power in himself--the last prime minister to hold both posts to date. Muldoon was re-elected in 1978 and 1981; however, in both elections, the Labour opposition received more popular votes across the country as a whole. This ambiguous mandate did not dilute Muldoon's agenda, and he became more e ...

Prime Minister: Encyclopedia II - Harold Wilson - Prime Minister

In 1964, Wilson narrowly won the general election with a majority of four and became Prime Minister. This was not sufficient to last for a full term and, after a short period of competent government, in March 1966 he won re-election with a landslide majority of 96. He was soon a familiar figure, known for his pipe-smoking (he especially liked Tobacco grown in Rhodesia), his Gannex raincoat, and his habit of taking holidays in the Isles of Scilly. On 1 June 2005 files were released showing that Wilson was concerned that, while on the Isles of Scilly, he was being monitored by Russian ships disguised as trawlers. MI5 found no evidence o ...

Prime Minister: Encyclopedia II - Jim Bolger - Prime Minister

Bolger's National government continued the economic and social reforms of the previous Labour government, with Finance Minister Ruth Richardson implementing drastic cuts in public spending, particularly in health and welfare. In addition, it continued the previous Labour government's anti-nuclear policy. In spite of his party's opposition, Bolger held a referendum on whether or not New Zealand should change from the British style electoral system of 'first past the post' to one of proportional representation. In 1992, New Zealanders v ...

Prime Minister: Encyclopedia II - Robert Muldoon - Prime Minister

Muldoon had remained National's Finance spokesman when he became leader, and took the Minister of Finance post when he became prime minister, thus concentrating enormous power in himself--the last prime minister to hold both posts to date. He had a reputation for being very combative, and many people in political positions and the media were afraid of openly confronting him. Muldoon led National to victory in 1978 and 1981; however, in both elections, the Labour opposition received more popular votes across the country as a whole. Prime Minister: Encyclopedia II - Brian Mulroney - Prime Minister

Brian Mulroney - First Term. Mulroney's having the first PC majority in 22 years was considered by many to be a breath of fresh air at first, but growing pains would soon surface. The lack of experience among appointed Ministers soon resulted in many embarassing scandals and conflict of interest allegations that would dog the government. The long time out of government also meant that many within ...

Prime Minister: Encyclopedia II - Peter Fraser - Prime Minister

After Savage's death in 1940, Fraser successfully contested the leadership against Gervan McMillan and Clyde Carr. He was, however, required to give the party's caucus the right to elect people to Cabinet without the Prime Minister's approval - this is still a feature of the Labour Party today. Despite this concession, however, Fraser remained in command, sometimes alienating his colleagues with his "authoritarian" style. Some of his determination to exercise control may have been due to the war, which Fraser focused almost exclusivel ...

Prime Minister: Encyclopedia II - Gough Whitlam - Prime Minister

Custom dictated that Whitlam should have waited until the process of vote counting was complete, and then called a Caucus meeting to elect his Ministers ready to be sworn in by the Governor-General. Meanwhile, the outgoing Prime Minister would remain in office as a caretaker. (As a matter of longstanding party policy, ALP Ministers are elected by the entire Parliamentary Party—the 'Caucus'—with the Prime Minister only having the power to assign portfolios. Liberal Prime Ministers, in contrast, have traditionall ...
