Pranayama - Pranayama (Sanskrit) [from prana breath + ayama restraining, stopping]
The fourth of the eight states of yoga, consisting of various methods of regulating the breath. The three forms of pranayama are puraka (the inhaling); kumbhaka (the retaining); and rechaka (the exhaling).
Any practice of pranayama can be fraught with serious danger, not merely to physical health, but in extreme cases to mental balance or stability. Pranayama, when actually practiced according to the exoteric rules, is a very different thing from the excellent and common sense advice given by doctors to breathe deeply, and to fill the lungs with fresh air. Pranayama should never be practiced by anyone unless under the guidance of initiated teachers, and these never proclaim themselves as teachers of pranayama, for the adepts use it only in rarest cases for certain pupils who for karmic reasons can be helped in this unusual and extraordinary way.
Nadi-shodhana - ("channel cleansing"): the practice of purifying the conduits, especially by means of breath control (pranayama)
Moorchha Pranayama - fainting or swooning breath'' in which the breath is inhaled slowly and retained for an extended period.
Surya Bheda Pranayama - breathing technique in which inhalation is done through the right nostril ; increases vitality
Pranayama - A yogic technique, consisting of systematic regulation and restraint of the breath, which leads to steadiness of mind.
Plavini Pranayama - breathing technique which involves gulping air and swallowing it into the stomach and retaining it
Seetkari Pranayama - Breathing technique which involves hissing leading to a cooling effect upon the whole body.
Pranayama - technique of breathing and breath control which regulates energy flow and aims at maintaining energy balance
Antar Kumbhaka - internal breath retention. The stage of pranayama where breath is retained after inhalation.
Bahir Kumbhaka - external breath retention. The stage of pranayama where breath is retained after exhalation.
Laya Yoga - union with the supreme consciousness through pranayama or devotion. Literally, union by absorption
Pranayama - Rhythmic control of breath used to increase prana and reduce obstructions in the body and mind.
Nasagra - hand gesture adopted during pranayama to alternate the flow of breath through the nostrils.
Pranayama - Pranayama (Sanskrit). The suppression and regulation of the breath in Yoga practice.
Ujjayi Pranayama - a kind of breathing technique which produces a light sonorous sound.

 |  |  | | * Pranaymas of Maharishi Patanjali We will now explain some pranayams of Maharishi Patanjali. Patanjali kriya gets rid off all negative emotions and feelings and negative energies. It also strengthens the mind and the five 'prans' in our body (pran, apan, saman, vyan and udan). The five 'kosh' or bodies (annamay kosh, pranamay kosh, manomay kosh, vigyanmay kosh and anandmay kosh) within us are also purified with these pranayam. Practise of these pranayam leads one to a thoughtless state (where one is without any thoughts) or the state of meditation.  |  |  | | * Relaxation thru breathing techniques In the true sense, cosmic consciousness and the life force emanating from it through the medium of the will is the source of life. But in creation, breath is the chord that ties the soul to the body. When breath stops, the body is just an inanimate corpse; the nervous system no longer works, the mind is extinguished, and life (as we understand it) comes to an end. On the physical level, the breath is the manifestation of more subtle energies of the subtle bodies of the being. The breath itself is not cosmic energy. The cosmic energy in fact breaks up the breath into the force that can be used by the body to sustain it, and it is the same same energy that forces out of our body, the unwanted residue of unedible mass that has accumulated therein.
