| ARTICLES RELATED TO Power Station | | | | Power Station: Encyclopedia II - Federal Communications Commission - Regulatory powersThe Federal Communications Commission has one major regulatory weapon, revoking licenses, but short of that has little leverage over broadcast stations (see FCC MB Docket 04-232). It is reluctant to do this since it operates in a near vacuum of information on most of the tens of thousands of stations whose licenses are renewed every eight years (previously, every three years). Broadcast licenses are supposed to be renewed if the station meets the "public interest, convenience, or necessity." The Federal Communications Commission rarely check ...

| | | | Power Station: Encyclopedia II - XERF AM - Brief history of XERF 1947-1959The facilities of the old XERA border-blaster which had been created by John R. Brinkley, were confiscated by the Mexican government in 1939 and the license for Villa Acuña remained silent until 1947. In that year a new license was granted to Mexican investors who created a new radio station originally using the old facilities of the defunct XERA. The station came on the air with a power of 100 kW. For many years the station made money by selling its time after nightfall to American evangelists who broadcast in English to the United States.

| | | | | Power Station: Encyclopedia II - Robert Palmer British singer - 1974-1984: Early solo careerOn the basis of his youthful looks, strong stage presence, and soulful voice, Island Records signed Palmer to a solo deal. His first solo album Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley recorded in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1974, was heavily influenced by the music of Little Feat and the funk fusion of The Meters who acted as backing band along with producer/guitarist Lowell George of Little Feat. His first single was a cover of Little Feat's "Sailin' Shoes". Although moderately s ...

Manitoba Hydro - 1873-1960: electric power before Manitoba Hydro.
The first recorded attempt to extract useful work from a Manitoba river was in 1829 at a flour mill (known as Grant's Mill) located on Sturgeon Creek in what is now Winnipeg. This was not successful and the milling equipment was later operated by a windmill.
The first public electric lighting installation in Manitoba was demonstrated at the Davis House hotel on Main Street, Winnipeg, March 12, 1873. In 1880, the Manitoba Electric and Gas Lig ...

| | | | Power Station: Encyclopedia II - Manitoba Hydro - Comparison of Manitoba Hydro to other utilitiesManitoba Hydro is unusual in North America because it is the sole commercial provider of electrical power in the province of Manitoba. It is a Crown corporation closely regulated by the Provincial government. This status arose because of the history of electrification in the Province, where early private commercial developers required a large initial return on investment owing to the high risks of the projects. This limited the economic benefits that electrification would bring. Manitoba Hydro is requ ...

| | | | | Power Station: Encyclopedia II - Robert Palmer British singer - 1996-2003: Late solo work and the bluesThe next few years saw more touring and more compilations; the next release of new material, Rhythm and Blues (1999) contained a mixture of Little Feat influenced songs, rock, and pop. Palmer released a single from the album Rhythm and Blues called "True Love" which turned out to be a minor hit in Britain.
His final release, Drive (2003), was critically hailed as his grittiest and most heartfelt album of his career. Inspired by a previous collaboration with Carl Carlton on a Robert Johnson tribute album, Drive fea ...

Sellafield - Windscale.
The Sellafield site is built on land that was formerly part of the Windscale nuclear site, which is named after a nearby village. Windscale was owned by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, but when part of it was transferred to BNFL, the transferred part was renamed as "Sellafield". The remainder of the site remains in the hands of the UKAEA and is still called Windscale.
Two air-cooled, graphite-moderated Windscale reactors constituted the first British weapons grade plutonium 239 production facility, built for the British nuclear weapon ...

| | | | Power Station: Encyclopedia II - Sellafield - ControversyThe site has been the subject of much controversy because of discharges of radioactive material, mainly accidental but some alleged to have been deliberate.
In the hasty effort to build the 'British Bomb' in the 1940s and 1950s, radioactive waste was diluted and discharged by pipeline into the Irish Sea. Some claim that the Irish Sea remains one of the most heavily contaminated seas in the world because of these discharges, although the relatively small size of the sea will also contribute to this. (1) claims that 250 kg of plutonium ...
