The main responses to poverty are: Poor Relief, or giving aid direct to poor people. This has been part of the approach of European societies since the middle ages. For example, the relief of poverty was recognised as a legal charitable purpose by the English Statute of Charitable Uses (Statute of Elizabeth) in 1601. Responses to individual circumstances. The Copenhagen Declaration describes absolute poverty as "a condition characterised by severe deprivation of basic human needs, including food, safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, health, shelter, education and information." The World Bank identifies "extreme poverty" as being people who live on less than US$(PPP) 1 a day, and "poverty" as less than $2 a day. Poverty: Ending Poverty Consciousness

Ending Poverty Consciousness

Definition number one of "poverty" in the American Heritage Dictionary is: "The state of being poor; lack of the means of providing material needs or comforts." It is further defined as "deficiency in amount; scantiness; unproductiveness; infertility."

By "poverty consciousness," I mean the set of attitudes and beliefs and feelings and values associated with material lack or fear of material lack. Poverty consciousness equals a belief in limitation, and almost always includes fear.

Poverty: Encyclopedia II - Economy of the United States - Poverty

There is significant disagreement about poverty in the United States; particularly over how poverty ought to be defined. Using radically different definitions, two major groups of advocates have claimed variously (a) that the United States has eliminated poverty over the last century; or (b) that it has such a severe crisis of poverty that it ought to devote significantly more resources to the problem. Much of the debate about poverty focuses on (a) statistical measures of poverty and (b) the clash between advocates and ...

Poverty: Poverty consciousness  and Material Well-Being

We are what we choose to be. Man has access to all the gifts given by Existence. Yet life on earth for many is one of want and deprivation. There are people living below relative poverty lines, and there are those who are overwhelmed by their excesses in wealth. Why these differences? Is it that God is partial and kind to one at the cost of another?

No! Relative differences arise because one believes that the abundance of the earth is for him to reach out and access, while the poverty-torn person unconsciously and continuously re-affirms his / her poverty-consciousness.

Poverty: The Law of Attraction Works Unceasingly

If one hold himself in the thought of poverty, he will be poor, and the chances are that he will remain in poverty. If he hold himself, whatever present conditions may be, continually in the thought of prosperity, he sets into operation forces that will sooner or later bring him into prosperous conditions. The law of attraction works unceasingly throughout the universe, and the one great and never changing fact in connection with it is, as we have found, that like attracts like.

Poverty: Bapu's Corporate Code of Conduct

All religions are unanimous in denouncing the amassing of wealth. The Bible declares: Easier indeed it is for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven. "Wealth undoes a man" - artham anartham, said Adi Sankaracharya. Fakiri, meaning voluntary poverty, is a way of life highly commended by the Sufi saints. Aparigraha, non-possession, is a value emphasised by the Bhagavad Gita.

Poverty: Encyclopedia - Poverty line

The poverty line is the level of income below which one cannot afford to purchase all the resources one requires to live. People who have an income below the poverty line have no discretionary disposable income, by definition. It is widely discussed how and where to set the poverty line. In practice, different countries often use different poverty lines. Globally, however, it is more common to use only one poverty line in order to compare economic welfare levels. When comparing poverty across countries, the purchasing power par ...

Poverty: Encyclopedia - Cycle of poverty

In economics and sociology, the cycle of poverty, or poverty cycle is a social phenomena whereby poverty-stricken individuals exhibit a tendency to remain poor throughout their lifespan and in many cases across generations. The cycle of poverty has been described as a catch-22 and a feedback loop, as it occurs because the financial resources necessary to get out of poverty, namely productive capital, can only be obtained if the individual has financial resources in the first place. This often means the poverty-stricken find it ...

Poverty: Encyclopedia - Apostolic poverty

Apostolic poverty is a doctrine professed by various religious orders, primarily those sprung from the mendicant orders of the Middle Ages in direct response to the call for reforms in the Roman Catholic Church. The doctrine was seen as a challenge to the wealth of the church and the ensuing corruption it brought. Francis of Assisi formed the Franciscans to emulate the poverty of Jesus Christ and to bring his message through a simple life and example. Dominic de Guzman founded a similar order known as the Dominicans. Some practitioners of this doctrine, most notably William of Ockham, came under h ...

Poverty: Encyclopedia II - Poverty line - Absolute poverty

A measure of absolute poverty quantifies the number of people below a poverty line, and this poverty line is thought to be independent of time and place. For the measure to be absolute, the line must be the same in different countries. Also, it does not change when the income distribution change. This is only possible when all consumed goods and services are counted and when PPP-exchange rates are used (see purchasing power parity). The intuition behind an absolute measure is that mere survival takes the same amount of good across the ...
