| ARTICLES RELATED TO Portland Rosebuds | | | | Portland Rosebuds: Encyclopedia II - 1926-27 NHL season - Regular SeasonWith the infusion of new teams, the NHL was split into the Canadian and American divisions (although interestingly the New York Americans were placed in the Canadian Division), along with an altered playoff format: the top team from each division would meet the winner of a total-goals series between the second and third place teams from their divisions. The winners of those total-goals series would meet in a best-of-five Stanley Cup Finals.
During the season, the Toronto St. Patricks were bought by Conn Smythe and renamed the Toronto Maple Leafs.

 | | | Portland Rosebuds: Encyclopedia II - Chicago Blackhawks - Franchise historyThe Chicago Black Hawks joined the NHL in 1926 as part of the league's successful foray into United States-based teams. Most of the Hawks' original players came from the Portland Rosebuds of the Western Hockey League, which had folded the previous season, and the players which were bought out by the Hawks' owner, Frederic McLaughlin.
The team nickname refers to Chief Black Hawk, a prominent figure in the history of Illinois, and is one of many sports team nicknames using Native Americans as icons. The team nickname was spelled primari ...

 | | | Portland Rosebuds: Encyclopedia II - Stanley Cup - HistoryThe Stanley Cup, originally a decorative bowl purchased from a London silversmith worth 10 guineas ($48.67 USD), was donated in 1892 by Lord Stanley, Governor General of Canada, who had become enamoured with ice hockey. It was originally used as the trophy given out to the top amateur hockey team in Canada, decided by the acceptance of a challenge from another team by the Cup holders and trustees.
Lord Stanley had made several preliminary regulations regarding the Cup:
The Cup also acted as the league championship of the ...

Detroit Red Wings - 1925 to 1949.
When the Western Hockey League folded after the 1925-26 WHL season, a deal was made so that two of the most successful of the teams in that league, the 1925 Stanley Cup champion Victoria Cougars, and the Portland Rosebuds (to become the Chicago Blackhawks) would jump to the NHL. The Victoria Cougars were originally called the Victoria Aristocrats and belonged to the Pacific Coast Hockey Association, which folded and then merged with the Western Canada Hockey League for the 1924-2 ...

 | | | Portland Rosebuds: Encyclopedia II - 1925-26 NHL season - Stanley Cup playoffsThis is the last season that saw challengers from outside of the NHL compete for the Stanley Cup. At the beginning of the season, the Western Canada Hockey League renamed itself the Western Hockey League because one of its teams, the Regina Capitals, had moved to the States to play in Portland, Oregon. They were renamed the Portland Rosebuds.
Once again, the Victoria Cougars finished third in their league but once again won their league championship and the right to play for the Stanley Cup. The previous season, the Cougars beat the M ...

 | | | Portland Rosebuds: Encyclopedia II - Montreal Canadiens - Franchise historyWith the possible exception of baseball's New York Yankees, no North American sports team has had as storied and as successful a history as the Montreal Canadiens, the oldest team in professional hockey. They have won 24 Stanley Cups, eleven more than the team with the next largest number – the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Maple Leafs are regarded by many as the Canadiens bitter rivals although within the Province of Quebec at least, this is open for debate. Since the 1970's, the Boston Bruins have developed a heated and emotional rival ...

 | | | Portland Rosebuds: Encyclopedia II - Detroit Red Wings - 2005-06 SeasonIn June 2005, due to his poor performance in the playoffs, the Red Wings decided to let go of head coach Dave Lewis. On July 15, 2005, Mike Babcock, former coach of the Mighty Ducks, became the new head coach for the Wings.
In July 2005, due to the new NHL restrictions, the Wings had to release Darren McCarty, Derian Hatcher and Ray Whitney. The Wings did re-sign Chris Chelios and Mathieu Schneider to one-year contracts and also signed 2004 top draft pick Johan Franzen. Team captain Steve Yzerman also re-signed for one year for what many fans feel will be his final season. On August 8, the Win ...

 | | | Portland Rosebuds: Encyclopedia II - Stanley Cup - Traditions and anecdotesThe Stanley Cup trophy itself is colloquially known as "Lord Stanley's Mug" or simply as "The Silver Cup" and tradition dictates that the winning team drink champagne from the top bowl after their victory. Another tradition dictates that immediately following the series-winning victory the captain of the winning team receives the Cup, and then is the first to hoist it overhead; the cup is then passed from player to player and hoisted by each member of the team as they skate round the rink, a tradition known as "skating the cup". This second ...

 | | | Portland Rosebuds: Encyclopedia II - Stanley Cup - Engraving on the CupA unique feature of the Stanley Cup is the fact that, with few exceptions in the past, the Stanley Cup is the only trophy in professional sports that has the name of every member of the winning team engraved upon it. This has not always been the case - one of Lord Stanley's original conditions said that each team could, at their own expense, add a ring on the Cup to commemorate their Cup victory (the first year being an exception). Initially, there was only one ring, the one added by the Montreal AAA. Teams would engrave their names on that ...

Stanley Cup - 1919 flu epidemic: Stanley Cup not awarded.
During the 1918-19 Stanley Cup playoffs between the Montreal Canadiens and the Seattle Metropolitans, several Canadiens players contracted Spanish influenza, part of a worldwide epidemic. The finals were cancelled after five games. The final game was never played, because Montreal players Joe Hall, Manager Kennedy, Billy Coutu, Jack McDonald and Edouard Lalonde were hospitalized with influenza. Joe Hall died four days after the cancelled game, and the seri ...

 | | | Portland Rosebuds: Encyclopedia II - 1925-26 NHL season - Regular seasonThe Hamilton Tigers (formally the Quebec Bulldogs) spent the first five seasons in the NHL in last place until last season where then went from worst to first. Due to a players' stike, the team was suspended, disbanded and then bought by "Big Bill" Dwyer, an infamous bootlegger from New York City. He moved the team and many of its players to New York City and renamed the team the New York Americans. The success enjoyed by the Tigers was not carried over to New York, though, as the Americans found themselves going from first overall as the Ti ...
