Polish Peasant Party: Encyclopedia II - Polish Peasant Party - History

After Poland regained independence with the end of the First World War in 1918, the party merged with agrarian groups from territories previously occupied by Imperial Russia and formed the first PSL led by Wincenty Witos, which was one of the most important political parties in the Second Polish Republic, until it was removed by the Sanacja. During World War II, PSL took part in forming the Polish government in exile and organising. After the war the leader of PSL, Stanislaw Mikolajczyk, returned to Soviet occupied Poland, hoping to recreate ...

Polish Peasant Party: Encyclopedia II - History of Poland 1945–1989 - Creation of the People's Republic of Poland 1945–1956

History of Poland 1945–1989 - Wartime devastation. Poland suffered enormous losses during World War II. While in 1939 Poland had 35.1 million inhabitants, the census of February 14, 1946 showed only 23.9 million. Over ninety percent of Poland's capital was destroyed in the aftermath of the Warsaw Uprising. Poland, still a predominantly agricultural country compared to Western nations, suffered catastrophic damage to its infrastruc ...

Polish Peasant Party: Encyclopedia II - Polish parliamentary election 2005 - Background

The Sejm is elected by proportional representation from multi-member constituencies, with seats divided among parties which gain more than five percent of the votes using the d'Hondt method. On the other hand, the Senate is elected under first-past-the-post bloc voting. This tends to cause the party or coalition which wins the elections to have a larger majority in the Senate than in the Sejm. At the 2001 elections, the SLD and UP won 216 of the 460 seats, and were able to form a government with the support of the Polish Peasant Party ...

Polish Peasant Party: Encyclopedia II - History of Poland 1939–1945 - German and Soviet Invasion

The Polish armed forces resisted the German invasion, but their strategic position was hopeless since Poland was surrounded on three sides by Germany and German-controlled Czechoslovakia. It was in Poland that the Germans first used the tactics of Blitzkrieg ("lightning war"): rapid advance of Panzer (armored) divisions, dive bombing to break up troop concentrations, and aerial bombing of undefended cities to sap civilian morale. The Polish Army and Air Force had little modern equipment to match the onslaught. German forces wer ...

Polish Peasant Party: Encyclopedia II - History of Poland 1989–present - Roundtable Talks and Elections

The government's inability to forestall Poland's economic decline led to waves of strikes across the country in April, May and August 1988. In an attempt to take control of the situation, the government gave de facto recognition to Solidarity, and Interior Minister Kiszczak began talks with Lech Wałęsa on August 31. These talks broke down in October, but a new series of negotiations, the "round-table" talks, began in February 1989. These talks produced an agreement in April for partly-open National Assembly elections. The June elect ...

Polish Peasant Party: Encyclopedia II - Józef Cyrankiewicz - World War II

Active in the Armia Krajowa, the Polish resistance, from the beginning of Poland's 1939 defeat at the start of World War II, Cyrankiewicz was captured by the Wehrmacht in the autumn of 1942 and sent to Auschwitz. He arrived on September 4, 1942, and received registration number 62,993. Working closely with another prisoner, Witold Pilecki, against whom he would later testify in a Communist show trial leading to Pilecki's death, Cyrankiewicz organised a mass breakout. By the end of the year, they had 500 prisoners ready to overthrow th ...

Polish Peasant Party: Encyclopedia II - History of Poland 1939–1945 - Dismemberment of Poland

Under the terms of two decrees by Hitler (8 October and 12 October 1939), large areas of western Poland were annexed to Germany. These included all the territories which Germany had lost under the 1918 Treaty of Versailles, such as the Polish Corridor, West Prussia and Upper Silesia, but also a large area of indisputably Polish territory east of these territories, including the city of Łódź. The Germans provided for the division of the annexed areas of Poland into the following administrative units: Reichsgau Warthelan ...

Polish Peasant Party: Encyclopedia II - History of Poland 1939–1945 - The General Government

The remaining block of territory was placed under a German administration called the General Government (in German Generalgouvernement für die besetzten polnischen Gebiete), with its capital at Kraków. The General Government was subdivided into four districts, Warsaw, Lublin, Radom, and Kraków. (For more detail on the territorial division of this area see General Government.) A German lawyer and prominent Nazi, Hans Frank, was appointed Governor-General of the occupied territories on 26 October 1939. Frank oversaw the segreg ...

Polish Peasant Party: Encyclopedia II - History of Poland 1939–1945 - Treatment of the Poles

It was German policy that the (non-Jewish) Poles were to be reduced to the status of serfs, and eventually replaced by German colonists. In the General Government all education but primary education was abolished and so was all Polish cultural, scientific, artistic life. Universities were closed and many university professors, along with teachers, lawyers, intellectuals and other members of the Polish elite, were arrested and executed. In 1943, the government selected the Zamojskie area for further German colonisation. German settlements were planned, and the Polish population expelled ami ...

Polish Peasant Party: Encyclopedia II - History of Poland 1939–1945 - The Holocaust in Poland

Persecution of the Jews by the occupation government, particularly in the urban areas, began immediately after the occupation. In the first year and a half, however, the Germans confined themselves to stripping the Jews of their property and herding them into ghettoes and putting them into forced labor in war-related industries. During this period the Jewish community leadership, which, unlike Polish authorities, had an official recognition by the Germans, was able to some extent to bargain with the Germans. After the German attack on the So ...

Polish Peasant Party: Encyclopedia II - History of Poland 1945–1989 - Changes in Polish society

The Communist years in Poland saw many dramatic changes, both political and social. There were a number of shifts in the social class composition, the role of women in society, and access to health and educational services. With expanded urban industrial opportunities in the early postwar years, agriculture steadily became less popular as an occupation and as a lifestyle. The service sector, like industry, grew rapidly in size in the postwar era, but much less than the service sectors of Western Europe. The result was a postwar exodus from t ...

Polish Peasant Party: Encyclopedia II - History of Poland 1945–1989 - Communist reform 1956–1970

History of Poland 1945–1989 - De-Stalinization. Stalin had died in 1953. Between 1953 and 1958 Nikita Khrushchev out manouvered his rivals and achieved power in the Soviet Union. In March 1956 Khrushchev denounced Stalin's cult of personality at the 20th Congress of the Soviet Communist Party. The de-Stalinization of official Soviet ideology left Poland's Stalinist hard-liners in a difficult position. In the same month as Khrushchev's speech, as unrest and desire for reform and change among both intellectuals a ...

Polish Peasant Party: Encyclopedia II - History of Poland 1945–1989 - The Gierek era 1970–1980

Gierek, like Gomułka in 1956, came to power on a raft of promises that now everything would be different: wages would rise, prices would remain stable, there would be freedom of speech, and those responsible for the violence at Gdynia and elsewhere would be punished. Although Poles were much more cynical than they had been in 1956, Gierek was believed to be an honest and well-intentioned man, and his promises bought him some time. He used this time to create a new economic program, one based on large-scale borrowing from the West—mainly f ...

Polish Peasant Party: Encyclopedia II - History of Poland 1945–1989 - The end of Communist rule 1980–1990

In September 1980, the increasingly frail Gierek was removed from office and replaced as Party leader by Stanisław Kania. Kania made the same sort of promises that Gomułka and Gierek made when they had come to power. But whatever goodwill the new leader gained by these promises was even shorter lived than it had been in 1956 and 1971, because there was no way that the regime could have kept the promises it had made at Gdańsk, even if it wanted to. The regime was still trapped by the conflict between economic necessity and political instab ...
