He ran an earlier project called "The Underground Railroad" that aimed to keep youths off drugs by getting them involved in music. | | | | Poetry On Death: Encyclopedia II - Wilfred Owen - Relationship with SassoonOwen, however, would have strongly disagreed with the assumption that he was superior, or even that he was a poet opposed to war. His poems criticise the conditions of the First World War, but his poetry is relatively unconcerned with its motives. He held Sassoon in an esteem not far from hero-worship, remarking to his mother about Sassoon that he was "not worthy to light his pipe". Several incidents in Owen's life, as well as some of his poems (e.g. It was a navy boy) and his circle of friends in London, have led to the conclusion th ...

Dante Alighieri - Early history and family.
Dante was born in 1265 and he tells us he was born under the sign of Gemini, placing his birthday in June. Dante was born 'Durante' and the name Dante is a shortened version of his name. He was born into the prominent Alighieri family of Florence, with loyalties to the Guelfs, a political alliance that supported the Papacy, involved in complex opposition to the Ghibellines, who were backed by the Holy Roman Emperor. These factions fashioned their names after the ones of ...

| | | | Poetry On Death: Encyclopedia II - Slam poetry - Slam and academiaSlam Poetry has sometimes been attacked by the academic poetry community. In an interview published in a recent Paris Review, literary critic and long-time slam detractor Harold Bloom called the movement "the death of art." In response, some slammers have called Bloom childish names. He has yet to formally respond to the charge that he is an "old fuddy-duddy dunder-head."
Others have levelled more serious challenges to Bloom's criticism. In an essay in OC Weekly, poet and critic Victor D. Infante said, "[The death of art] is a big onu ...

He lived at Knossos for periods of nine years, at the end of which he retired into a sacred cave, where he received instruction from Zeus in the legislation which he gave to the island. Schiller Institute - Music.
In 1988 the Schiller Institute initiated a campaign to return to the so-called "Verdi tuning" in the world of classical music, so-called because it was Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi who originally waged a battle to stop the arbitrary rising of the pitch to which orchestras are tuned. The "Verdi tuning" is one where C=256HZ, or A=432HZ, as opposed to the common practice today ...

| | | | Poetry On Death: Encyclopedia II - D. H. Lawrence - WorksRealism was the main feature of Lawrence's writings and his unflinching depictions of the gritty struggles of everyday life give many of his novels a melancholy tone. His poems help to balance this with many powerful and evocative descriptions of nature, although moments of beauty are present in his books.
Among his many works, most famous are his novels Sons and Lovers (1913), The Rainbow (1915), Women in Love (1920), and Lady Chatterley's Lover (1928). These all take place in and around Eastwood, Lawrence ...

| | | | Poetry On Death: Encyclopedia II - Jim Morrison - LegacyMorrison remains one of the most popular and influential singers in rock history, as The Doors' catalogue has become a staple of classic rock radio stations. To this day, he is widely regarded as the prototypical rock star: surly, sexy and mysterious. The leather pants he was fond of wearing onstage have since become stereotyped as rock star apparel.
Jim Morrison was a huge fan of music and poetry. Like nearly every blues musician he occasionally paid homage to his favorite poets (such as William Blake) and lyricists in his own lyrics ...

| | | | Poetry On Death: Encyclopedia II - D. H. Lawrence - List of Lawrence's writingsA note on the editions cited below
D H Lawrence is one of the great literary artists of the twentieth century - yet the texts of his writings, whether published during his lifetime or since, are, for the most part, textually corrupt.
The Cambridge Edition of the Letters and Works of D H Lawrence represents a major scholarly undertaking, which aims to provide new versions of the texts which are as close as can now be determined to those which the author would have wished to see printed. This ongoing project, started in 19 ...

| | | | Poetry On Death: Encyclopedia II - Jim Morrison - Jim Morrison in fictionIn the early 1980s, low budget filmmaker Larry Buchanan made the film Beyond the Doors aka Down On Us, which advanced the theory that Morrison, along with Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin were killed by the government in an attempt to stamp out "radicals."
Morrison's story was filmed in 1991 with Oliver Stone's biopic The Doors, starring Val Kilmer as Morrison. The film was generally well-received, although not all fans liked it, and the surviving Doors were reportedly not pleased with the historical liberties that S ...

D. H. Lawrence - Early life 1885-1912.
The fourth child of Arthur John Lawrence, a barely literate miner, and Lydia, née Beardsall, a former schoolmistress, David Herbert Richards Lawrence was born and spent his formative years in the coal mining town of Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom. His birthplace, in Eastwood, 8a Victoria Street, is now a museum. His working class background and the tensions between his mismatched parents provided the raw material for a number of his early works and Lawrence would return to this locality, which he was to call "the country of my heart" ...
