David Herbert Lawrence (11 September 1885 – 2 March 1930) was one of the most important, prolific and controversial English writers of the 20th century, whose output spans novels, short stories, poems, plays, essays, travel books, paintings, translations, literary criticism and personal letters. These works, taken together, represent an extended reflection upon the dehumanising effects of modernity and industrialisation. In them Lawrence confronts issues relating to emotional health and vitality, spontaneity, sexuality, and instinctive behaviour, making hi ...

Poetry On Death: Encyclopedia II - Muhammad Iqbal - Return to the Subcontinent

Upon his return to India from Europe in 1908, Iqbal embarked on a career in law, academics and poetry, all at once. Of the three pursuits, he excelled in what was his true calling and first love--poetry. There is a widely held belief that had the Government College in Lahore been more generous with their monthly stipend and academic freedom, he would have been as brilliant an academician as he was a poet. In fact, it was financial considerations that forced him to relinquish his assistant professorship in 1909 to take up a fulltime law caree ...

Poetry On Death: Encyclopedia II - Wilfred Owen - Biography

Wilfred Owen - Early life. Owen was born at Plas Wilmot near Oswestry in Shropshire on the 18th of March 1893 of mixed English and Welsh ancestry. At that time, his parents lived in a comfortable house owned by his grandfather, but, on his death in 1895, the family were forced to move to lodgings in the back streets of Birkenhead. He was educated at the Birkenhead Institute and at Shrewsbury Technical School, and discovered his vocation in 1903 or 1904 during a holiday spent in Cheshire. His early influences included John Keats, and, as with ...

Poetry On Death: Encyclopedia II - Wilfred Owen - Death

In July of 1918, Owen returned to active service in France, though he might have stayed on home-duty indefinitely. His decision was almost wholly the result of Sassoon's being sent back to England. Sassoon, who had been shot in the head, was put on sick-leave for the remaining duration of the war. Owen saw it as his poetic duty to take Sassoon's place at the front, that the horrific realities of the war might continue to be told. Sassoon was violently opposed to the idea of Owen returning to the trenches, threatening to "stab [him] in the leg" if he tried it. Aware of his attitude, Owen did not inform him of his act ...

Poetry On Death: Encyclopedia II - Boris Vian - Career

Vian received a degree as a civil engineer and began his career at the French Association for Standardisation. This was by all accounts an undemanding post, and Vian amused himself with pataphysical conundrums, by composing songs and sketching sub-aqueous plants, and by publishing a chapbook for friends, satirising his colleagues. Vian found serious work distasteful. Vian wrote 10 novels, including popular hardboiled thrillers published under the name Vernon Sullivan, Vian's fictionalised American persona. The Sullivan oeuvre earned V ...

Poetry On Death: Encyclopedia II - Victor Hugo - Declining years and death

When Hugo returned to Paris in 1870, the country hailed him as a national hero. He went on to weather, within a brief period, the Siege of Paris, a mild stroke, his daughter Adèle’s commitment to an insane asylum, and the death of his two sons. (His other daughter, Léopoldine, had drowned in a boating accident in 1843; his wife Adele passed away in 1868; and his faithful mistress, Juliette Drouet, died in 1883, only two years before his own death.) Despite his pe ...

After three unsuccessful attempts, Hugo was finally elected to the Académie Francaise in 1841, solidifying his position in the world of French arts and letters. Thereafter he became increasingly involved in French politics as a supporter of the Republican form of government. He was elevated to the peerage by King Louis-Philippe in 1841 and entered the Higher Chamber as a Pair de France, where he spoke against the death penalty and social injustice, and in favour of freedom of the press and self-government for Poland. He was later elected to the Legislative Assembly and the Constitutional Assembly, following the 1 ...

Immediately after his release from prison, Shakur went back to work recording. He released the notorious song "Hit 'Em Up", a bitterly scathing lyrical attack on Biggie Smalls (Christopher Wallace) and others associated with him. Though the two had been friends, Shakur became convinced by Wallace's behavior on the night Shakur was shot that Wallace had had some prior knowledge that Shakur was going to be attacked. Wallace steadfastly denied this but Shakur remained unconvinced. Shakur took the lyrics of Wallace's song "Who Shot Ya?" as being ...
