Poetry About Death: Encyclopedia - Achilles Last Stand

"Achilles Last Stand" is a song by British rock group Led Zeppelin. It is found on the 1976 album Presence. Led Zeppelin was working on this at the time Robert Plant was recovering from a car accident. Coincidentally, he got so excited while recording this that he fell and re-injured his ankle, similarly to the song's namesake, Achilles. The song is one of the longest Zeppelin songs, at 10 minutes and 25 seconds. The song is famous for John Bonham's powerful drumming and Jimmy Page's many-a-time overdubbed guitar playing. It ...

Poetry About Death: Encyclopedia II - Jim Morrison - Legacy

Morrison remains one of the most popular and influential singers in rock history, as The Doors' catalogue has become a staple of classic rock radio stations. To this day, he is widely regarded as the prototypical rock star: surly, sexy and mysterious. The leather pants he was fond of wearing onstage have since become stereotyped as rock star apparel. Jim Morrison was a huge fan of music and poetry. Like nearly every blues musician he occasionally paid homage to his favorite poets (such as William Blake) and lyricists in his own lyrics ...

Poetry About Death: Encyclopedia II - Jim Morrison - Jim Morrison in fiction

In the early 1980s, low budget filmmaker Larry Buchanan made the film Beyond the Doors aka Down On Us, which advanced the theory that Morrison, along with Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin were killed by the government in an attempt to stamp out "radicals." Morrison's story was filmed in 1991 with Oliver Stone's biopic The Doors, starring Val Kilmer as Morrison. The film was generally well-received, although not all fans liked it, and the surviving Doors were reportedly not pleased with the historical liberties that S ...

Poetry About Death: Encyclopedia II - D. H. Lawrence - Life

D. H. Lawrence - Early life 1885-1912. The fourth child of Arthur John Lawrence, a barely literate miner, and Lydia, née Beardsall, a former schoolmistress, David Herbert Richards Lawrence was born and spent his formative years in the coal mining town of Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom. His birthplace, in Eastwood, 8a Victoria Street, is now a museum. His working class background and the tensions between his mismatched parents provided the raw material for a number of his early works and Lawrence would return to this locality, which he was to call "the country of my heart" ...

Poetry About Death: Encyclopedia II - C. S. Lewis - Lewis’s death and legacy

Lewis died on November 22, 1963, at the Oxford home he shared with his brother, Warren. He is buried in the Headington Quarry Churchyard, Oxford, England. Media coverage of his death was overshadowed by news of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which occurred on the same day, as did the death of author Aldous Huxley. (This coincidence was the inspiration for Peter Kreeft’s book Between Heaven and Hell: A Dialog Somewhere Beyond Death with John F. Kennedy, C. S. Lewis & Aldous Huxley. In addition to his career as an English professor and an author of novels, Lewis also wrote a number of books about Christianity — perhaps most famously, Mere Christianity, which is considered a classic of Christian apologetics. In 2000, Mere Christianity was named the best book of the twentieth century by Christianity Today magazine, after the magazine asked 100 of its contributors and Church leaders to vote for best book. He was very much interested in presenting a reasonable case for the truth of Christianity. Me ...

In addition to his scholarly work, Lewis wrote a number of popular novels, including his science-fiction Space Trilogy, his fantasy Narnia books, and various other novels, most containing allegories on Christian themes such as sin, the Fall, and redemption. Poetry About Death: Encyclopedia II - C. S. Lewis - Early life

Clive Staples Lewis was born in Belfast, Ireland (now Northern Ireland), to Albert James Lewis and Flora Augusta Hamilton Lewis. At the age of 4, shortly after his dog 'Jacksie' was run over by an automobile, Lewis announced that his name was now Jacksie. At first he would answer to no other name, but later accepted Jacks which became Jack, the name by which he was known to friends and family for the rest of his life. While living in Belfast he attended Campbell College in the east of the city. He had a brother named Warren Hamilton L ...

Lewis experienced a certain cultural shock when living in England. "No Englishman will be able to understand my first impressions of England," Lewis wrote in Surprised by Joy. "The strange English accents with which I was surrounded seemed like the voices of demons. But what was worst was the English landscape… I have made up the quarrel since; but at that moment I conceived a hatred for England which took many years to heal." From his youth, Lewis had immersed himself in Irish mythology and literature and expressed an intere ...

Poetry About Death: Encyclopedia II - C. S. Lewis - Conversion to Christianity

Although raised as a Christian, Lewis was an atheist for much of his youth. When he later wrote an account of his adult reconversion to Christianity, under the title Surprised by Joy, he said that he had been "very angry with God for not existing." Some interpret this to mean that he did not so much reject the existence of God as harbour anger at God for the unfairnesses in life. This interpretation appears to be contradicted by a letter to a friend, in which he said, "all religions, no, mythologies to give them their proper name, hav ...

Lewis taught as a fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford, for nearly thirty years, from 1925 to 1954, and later was the first Professor of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at the University of Cambridge and a fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge. Using this position, he argued that there was no such thing as an English Renaissance. Much of his scholarly work concentrated on the later Middle Ages, especially its use of allegory. His The Allegory of Love (1936) helped reinvigorate the serious study of late medieval narratives like the ...

The Pilgrim's Regress. His first novel after becoming a Christian was The Pilgrim's Regress, his take on John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress which depicted his own experience with Christianity. The book was panned at the time. Space Trilogy. His Space Trilogy or "Ransom Trilogy" novels dealt with what Lewis saw as the then-current dehumanizing trends in modern science fiction. Poetry About Death: Encyclopedia II - D. H. Lawrence - Works

Realism was the main feature of Lawrence's writings and his unflinching depictions of the gritty struggles of everyday life give many of his novels a melancholy tone. His poems help to balance this with many powerful and evocative descriptions of nature, although moments of beauty are present in his books. Among his many works, most famous are his novels Sons and Lovers (1913), The Rainbow (1915), Women in Love (1920), and Lady Chatterley's Lover (1928). These all take place in and around Eastwood, Lawrence ...

Poetry About Death: Encyclopedia II - Iain Lom - Biography

Iain Lom's family were the MacDonalds of Keppoch. His dates of birth and death are unknown, but we know that he was present at (and wrote about) the Battle of Inverlochy (1645) as an adult, and the Treaty of Union (1707); this would presume a birthdate in the early-mid 1620s (if not earlier), and a death in the early 18th century. Most of the details of his life are known from his poetry. The ...

Poetry About Death: Encyclopedia II - D. H. Lawrence - List of Lawrence's writings

A note on the editions cited below D H Lawrence is one of the great literary artists of the twentieth century - yet the texts of his writings, whether published during his lifetime or since, are, for the most part, textually corrupt. The Cambridge Edition of the Letters and Works of D H Lawrence represents a major scholarly undertaking, which aims to provide new versions of the texts which are as close as can now be determined to those which the author would have wished to see printed. This ongoing project, started in 19 ...

Poetry About Death: Encyclopedia II - Hafez - Life

Very little credible information is known about Hafez's life, particularly its early part - there is a great deal of more or less mythical anecdote. Judging from his poetry, he must have had a good education, or else found the means to educate himself. Scholars generally agree on the following: His father Baha-ud-Din is said to have been a coal merchant who died when Hafez was a child, leaving him and his mother in debt. It seems probable that he met with Attar of Shiraz, a somewhat disreputable sch ...

Poetry About Death: Encyclopedia II - Mao Zedong - Cult of Mao

One of the reasons Mao is most remembered is the Cult of Mao, the personality cult that was created around him. Mao presented himself as an enemy of landowners, businessmen and Western and American imperialism, as well as an ally of impoverished peasants, farmers and workers. Some argue that personality cults go against the basic ideas of Marxism. Stalin, however, circumvented this and began cultivating a cult of personality around himself and Lenin, even though Lenin expressly wished tha ...
