Pleasure and Pain: The Way of Pain

The Way of Pain

The Sanskrit word saha means "to endure, to go patiently through hardships without rebelling."1 The process of disillusionment is an unquestionably painful process at times. Genuine spiritual life has never been popular, and never will be, because most people are unwilling to open to and accept pain.

Pleasure and Pain: Encyclopedia - Pain

Pain is an unpleasant sensation which may be associated with actual or potential tissue damage and which may have physical and emotional components. According to the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), one should distinguish between pain and nociception. The term "pain" is a subjective experience that typically accompanies nociception, but can also arise without any stimulus. It includes the emotional response. Nociception, on the other hand, is a neurophysiological term and denotes specific activity in nerv ...

Pleasure and Pain: Fleeting Pleasure, Enduring Pain

Let's talk about pleasure and pain. Pleasure first, because it makes you feel good. But life's pleasures seem so fleeting and evanescent, like glistening dewdrops that evaporate with the first hint of the warm rays of the sun.

A pleasant state of being , we instinctively feel, is intrinsically unstable. Pleasure vanishes like a transient bubble, while pain endures. What is pleasant is short-lived because the human mind quickly gets used to it, and subconsciously craves to heighten and intensify that feeling of pleasure, as it lingers in the memory and haunts the mind.

Pleasure and Pain: The Pleasure of No Desire

Buddhist Quotes: The Pleasure of No Desire

There is pleasure when a sore is scratched,

But to be without sores is more pleasurable still.

Just so, there are pleasures in worldly desires,

But to be without desires is more pleasurable still.

Pleasure and Pain: Dance with your pain

Why is it so difficult for us to release the pain of yesterday and move forward with our lives? It's not as though we enjoy being stuck in painful memories.Rather, the longer we remain stuck in them, the more deeply they wound us.

Someone very close to me refuses to let go of the pain her ex-husband inflicted on her years ago. I admit it was a horrible time for her, and left very deep wounds. It is understandable that she would have trouble letting go of these memories, as they are a part of her. Yet, they are not just a part of her, they are the biggest part of her. Why? Because she chooses to make them so.

Pleasure and Pain: When I meditate I experience physical pain in my body

When I meditate I experience physical pain in my body. What should I do?

Sensations (itching/aches/pains/etc.) can arise in the body when meditating for several reasons. Sometimes the cause is just an uncomfortable posture--make sure that your posture is comfortable under normal circumstances.

Other times the cause is that sensations in the body are more noticeable in meditation.

Pleasure and Pain: Vedic Philosophy - Body And Soul

Body And Soul: The individual souls are eternal, manifold, eternally separate from one another, and distinct from the body, senses and mind; and yet capable of apprehension, volition, desire, aversion, pleasure, pain, merit and demerit. They are infinite, ubiquitous or omnipresent and diffused everywhere throughout space. A mans soul is as much in New York as in Bombay, although it can only apprehend and feel and act where the body is. The soul and the mind are not objects of perception.

Pleasure and Pain: Spiritual Labor Pains

The issues of "suffering" and "life problems" should only be deliberated with people who are at the moment relatively happy and carefree. We can then expect some measure of objectivity. It's just too easy to sneer sardonically when you're depressed and watching some overly cheery, toothy, five-hundred-dollars-per-workshop, "successful living" multi-millionaire entrepreneur filling you with platitudes and urging you to pull up your socks ... (Yeah right, buddy. Up yours, and that goes double for your "inner child!")

Pleasure and Pain: Limitless Pleasure - Bhagavata Dharma

What is a human being’s dharma?

Every entity and idea has its own distinct characteristic which differentiates it from another. Water has the property of making things wet. As long as it has this property, people will call it water. Similarly, as long as fire has the property of burning things, it will be called fire. When it loses this property, it will no longer be called fire.

Human beings also have a dharma, which marks them as human. The corporeal body is not the limit of our consciousness.

Pleasure and Pain: Healing the Human Heart of Pain

It's not surprising to see both Hindus and Muslims praying at the dargah of the thirteenth century sufi, Shaikh Nizamuddin Aulia (1244-1325), in New Delhi. A refugee who had sought shelter here along with his parents, when Bukhara was subjected to repeated Mongol invasions, Nizamuddin never went back to the Central Asian Republic. Living here amongst the common people, he stressed that a mystic should transcend all barriers of religion, race and language in dealing with human beings.

Pleasure and Pain: Vedic Philosophy - Bondage And Release

Bondage And Release: Pleasure and pain result from the contact of soul, sense, mind and object. From pleasure arises desire. From pleasure derived from the enjoyment of garlands, sandal paste, women and other objects, Raga or desire is produced successively for pleasure of a similar kind or for the means of attaining it. From pain caused by snakes, scorpions, thorns and the like, aversion arises with regard to such pain or with regard to its source.

Pleasure and Pain: Encyclopedia - Blackpool Pleasure Beach

Blackpool Pleasure Beach is an amusement park in the town of Blackpool in Lancashire, England. It was founded in 1896 by Alderman William George Bean, who said his intent was to create "...an American Style Amusement Park, the fundamental principle of which is to make adults feel like children again and to inspire gaiety of a primarily innocent character." It is the home of the Pepsi Max Big One, a 213-foot-tall steel roller coaster built in 1994 by Arrow Dynamics. Until 2002, this was the tallest roller coaster in Europe. Entrance to the park is free and rides may be paid for in tok ...

Pleasure and Pain: Encyclopedia - Chronic pain

Chronic pain was originally defined as pain that has lasted 6 months or longer. It is now defined as pain that persists longer than the normal course of time associated with a particular type of injury. This constant or intermittent pain has often outlived its purpose, as it does not help the body to prevent injury. It is often more difficult to treat than acute pain.
