Plasticine: Encyclopedia - Clay

Clay is a generic term for an aggregate of hydrous silicate particles less than 4 μm (micrometres) in diameter. Clay consists of a variety of phyllosilicate minerals rich in silicon and aluminium oxides and hydroxides which include variable amounts of structural water. Clays are generally formed by the chemical weathering of silicate-bearing rocks by carbonic acid, but some are formed by hydrothermal activity. Clays are distinguished from other small parti ...

Plasticine: Encyclopedia II - Clay - Historical and modern uses of clay

Clays are heavy in texture yet soft to the touch. Clay is a malleable substance when wet, which means it can be shaped easily with the hands. When dry, it becomes firm and when "fired," or hardened by intense heat, clay becomes permanently solid. A fireplace or oven specifically designed for hardening clay is called a kiln. These properties make clay an ideal substance for making durable pottery items, both practical and decorative, with different types of clay and firing conditions giving earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. Early humans d ...

Plasticine: Encyclopedia - Wallace and Gromit

Wallace and Gromit are the main characters in a series of three British animated short films and a feature-length film by Nick Park of Aardman Animations. All the characters were made from moulded Plasticine modelling clay on wire frames, and filmed with stop motion animation. This process is sometimes known as "claymation". Wallace is an absent-minded inventor, cheese enthusiast (especially for Wensleydale cheese), and companion to the dog Gromit who appears to be rather more intelligent than his master. Wallace is voiced by v ...

Plasticine: Encyclopedia - Claymation

The term "Claymation" is a registered trademark created by Will Vinton Studios to describe their clay animated movies; the more generic term is "clay animation", but "claymation" has entered the English language as a genericized trademark. Clay animation is but one form of stop motion animation; specifically, it is the form where each animated piece, either character or background, is "deformable". All animation is produced in a similar fashion, whether done through traditional cel animation, stop-motion, or CGI. Each fr ...

Plasticine: Encyclopedia II - Claymation - Technical explanation

In clay animation, each object is sculpted in clay or a similarly pliable material such as Plasticine, usually around an armature. As in other forms of object animation, the object is arranged on the set, a shot is taken and the object or character is then moved very slightly by hand. Another shot is taken and the object moved slightly again. To achieve the best results, a consistent shooting environment is needed to maintain the illusion of continuity. This means paying special attention to maintaining consistent lighting and object placement.< ...

Plasticine: Encyclopedia II - Wallace and Gromit - Studio Fire Incident

On October 10, 2005, a fire at a storage building in Bristol owned by Aardman Animations destroyed most of the props and sets used in the animated films. Creator Nick Park released a statement that the original Wallace and Gromit figures were in his suitcase on a world tour with him at the time. Some other models survived as they were part of a travelling exhibition at the time. Other figures, however, such as Wallace and Gromit travelling in their sidecar, were lost. The films themselves are unharmed having been stored at a separa ...
