Plaisance of Antioch: Encyclopedia II - Cyprus in the Middle Ages - Crusades—Lusignan Period 1191-1489

In the 12th century A.D. the island became a target of the crusaders. Richard the Lionheart landed in Limassol on the 1st of June 1191 in search of his sister and his bride Berengaria, whose ship had become separated from the fleet in a storm. Upon her arrival, the ruler Isaac Comnenus of Cyprus requested that Berengaria deboard, which she refused, and upon her own refusal was denied supplies from Comnenus. Richard took this as an insult and attacked the island which was easily subdued. Comnenus was bound to lend aid to Richard in his crusad ...

Plaisance of Antioch: Encyclopedia II - Balian of Ibelin - Early life

He was the son of Barisan of Ibelin, and brother of Hugh and Baldwin. His father had been a knight in the County of Jaffa, and had been rewarded with the lordship of Ibelin after the revolt of Hugh II of Le Puiset. Barisan married Helvis, heiress of the wealthy lordship of Ramla. Balian's name was also Barisan, but the pronunciation of the name in Old French changed to "Balian" in the course of the 12th century; he is sometimes known as Balian the Younger or Balian II when his father is also referred to as Balian. He is also called Balian of ...

Plaisance of Antioch: Encyclopedia II - Ibelin - The 13th century Ibelins

Balian's descendants were among the most powerful nobles in the Kingdom of Jerusalem and the Kingdom of Cyprus. Balian's first son John of Ibelin, the "Old Lord of Beirut", was the leader of the opposition to Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor, when the emperor tried to impose imperial authority over the crusader states. The family briefly regained control of the castle of Ibelin in 1241 in the aftermath of Frederick's Sixth Crusade, when certain territories were returned to the Christians by treaty. John had numerous children with Melisende o ...

Plaisance of Antioch: Encyclopedia II - Ibelin - The family: first and second generations

The Ibelin family rose from relatively humble origins to become one of the most important noble families in the Crusader states of Jerusalem and Cyprus. The family claimed to be descended from the Le Puiset viscounts of Chartres, but this appears to be a later fabrication. Its first known member Barisan was apparently a knight in service of the Count of Jaffa and in the 1110s became constable of Jaffa. As reward for his capable and loyal service, arou ...

Plaisance of Antioch: Encyclopedia II - Cyprus in the Middle Ages - Venetian Period 1489-1571

Caterina Cornaro left her kingdom on the doge's ship in 1489, apparently against her will as she was well loved by the inhabitants. She survived almost 20 years after her reluctant abdication, and the rule of Cyprus passed over to the Venetian Signory. Venice had been accumulating land, despite its early success solely as a sea power, and Cyprus came under its jurisdiction. In a model like Pericles in Thucydides, or George Washington's farewell address in American History, the Venetian Doge Moncinego had long ago warned Venice not to overextended itself in a ...

Plaisance of Antioch: Encyclopedia II - Ibelin - The castle

The site of Ibelin had been occupied since ancient times; the Romans called it Iamnia. The crusader castle was built in 1141 between Jaffa and Ascalon, near Montgisard and Ramla. At that time Ascalon was still controlled by Fatimid Egypt, and Egyptian armies marched out every year from Ascalon to attack the crusader kingdom. Ibelin was constructed in order to contain these attacks to a smaller area. The original castle, built by King Fulk of Jeru ...

Plaisance of Antioch: Encyclopedia II - Cyprus in the Middle Ages - Byzantine period and Arab Condominium

The cities of Cyprus were destroyed by two successive earthquakes in 332 and 342 AD and this marked the end of an era and at the same time the beginning of a new one, very much connected with modern life in Cyprus. Most of the cities were not rebuilt, save Salamis which was rebuilt on a smaller scale and renamed Constantia after the Roman Emperor Constantius II, son of Constantine the Great, residing in Constantinople. The new city was now the capital of the island. It was mainly Christian and due to this some alterations were made du ...

Plaisance of Antioch: Encyclopedia II - Balian of Ibelin - The nobles' faction

The Ibelins were partisans of the nobles' faction in the kingdom, made up of the lower nobility and older families who had lived there for generations; this faction was opposed to the new families of recently arrived crusaders, who tended to ally with the royal family. Balian and Baldwin supported Raymond III of Tripoli over Miles of Plancy as regent for King Baldwin IV in 1174, and in 1177 the brothers were present at the Battle of Montgisard, leading the vanguard victoriously against the strongest point of the Muslim line. That year Balian ...

Plaisance of Antioch: Encyclopedia II - Balian of Ibelin - Defense of Jerusalem

When Balian arrived in the city, the inhabitants begged him to stay, and he was absolved of his oath to Saladin by Patriarch Heraclius, who argued that a Christian could not make an oath to an infidel. Balian was recruited to lead the defense of the city, but he found that there were only two other knights there, so he created sixty new knights from the ranks of the burgesses. With Queen Sibylla and Heraclius, he prepared for the inevitable siege by storing food and money. Saladin indeed arrived to besiege the city in September, after he had ...

Plaisance of Antioch: Encyclopedia II - Balian of Ibelin - Legacy

Balian died in 1193. With Maria he had two sons: John of Ibelin was Lord of Beirut and constable of Jerusalem, and Philip of Ibelin acted as Regent of Cyprus. Balian's squire Ernoul, who was with him on the embassy to Tripoli in 1187, wrote an Old French continuation of the Latin chronicle of William of Tyre. William had died in 1186, before the fall of Jerusalem, and Ernoul's chronicle is an important source of information for this period, despite its heavy bias in favour of the Ibelin family and the nobles' faction. Western chronicl ...
