 | | | Pity: Encyclopedia II - Empathy - Psychological perspectivesSome experts (psychologists, psychiatrists, and other scientists) believe that not all humans have an ability to feel empathy or perceive the emotions of others. For instance, Autism and related conditions such as Asperger's syndrome are often (but not always) characterized by an apparent reduced ability to empathize with others. The interaction between empathy and autism spectrum disorders is a complex and ongoin ...

 | | | Pity: Encyclopedia II - Empathy - Other aspectsIn addition to the above use, the term empathy is also used by some people to signify their heightened or higher sensitivity to the emotions and state of others. This, reportedly, can lead to both positive aspects such as a more skilled instinct for what is "behind the scenes" with people, but also to difficulties such as rapid over-stimulation, overwhelm or stress caused by an inability to protect oneself from this so-called 'pick-up'. Such people may for example find crowds stressful simply due to picking up what is often described as "whi ...

 | | | Pity: Encyclopedia II - Empathy - FictionThe empathic process is exploited to a certain extent in all kinds of fiction, thus we may identify deeply with characters appearing in books, plays or films (see especially Currie 2004).
In some works of science fiction and fantasy, empathy is understood to be a paranormal or psychic ability to sense the emotions of others, as opposed to telepathy, which allows one to perceive thoughts as well. A person who has that ability is ...

 | | | Pity: Encyclopedia II - Empathy - Organic basisResearch in recent years has focused on possible brain processes as concomitant with empathy.
Functional imaging has recently been employed to investigate the functional anatomy of empathy: Farrow et al (Neuroreport 2001; 12:2433-2438) found that empathic judgments activated left superior frontal gyrus, orbitofrontal gyrus, precuneus, left anterior middle temporal gyrus and inferior frontal gyrus. Components of this circuit may be dysfunctional in psychopathy (Tunstall N., Fahy T. and McGuire P. in: Guide to Neuroimaging in Psychia ...

 | | | Pity: Encyclopedia II - Empathy - BackgroundWhile the ability to imagine oneself as another person is a sophisticated imaginative process that only fully develops later on in life, the roots of this ability are probably innate. Human capacity to recognize the emotions of others is related to our imitative capacities, and seems to be grounded in the innate capacity to associate the bodily movements and facial expressions we see with the proprioceptive feelings of those same movements or expressions. Humans also make the same immediate connection between tone of voice and inner feeling. ...

 | | | Pity: Encyclopedia II - Morgoth - HistoryEven before Arda was created Melkor was jealous of his creator, and he wanted to be king of other wills himself. He spent a long time looking for the Secret Fire, either unaware or uncomprehending that this was a quality exclusive to Eru and his servants through him. During his search, which took him far away from Eru and his brethren, his thoughts gradually became less and less in harmony with their own, and this was the beginning of his downfall. During the Music of the Ainur Melkor directly competed with Eru's theme, and managed to ...

 | | | Pity: Encyclopedia II - Morgoth - AppearanceOf Morgoth's appearance in precise terms, we know little. It is known that he was dark, and wore an Iron Crown with three silmarils fixed in it. Our main source of information about his appearance comes from the account of his battle with the Elven-king Fingolfin. Morgoth is described as "towering" over the latter, bearing a battle hammer ("Grond") and a giant, black shield with no coat of arms.
As Morgoth was (originally) one of the Valar, he originally had the ability to change his appearance according to his will. He lost this power when he appeared as a dark lor ...

 | | | Pity: Encyclopedia II - Morgoth - Names and titlesHis name among the Ainur (used by both servant and enemy) was recorded as Melkor, in an old form Melkórë, which is actually Quenya for "he who arises in might". His original Valarin name is not recorded. The Sindarin form of this name was Belegur, which was never used except in the altered form Belegurth, meaning Great Death. The oldest name known, from Common Eldarin, was *mbelekôro.
After the Darkening of Valinor he was by the Elves never again called by his old name, but always called See also: Morgoth, Morgoth - History, Morgoth - Characteristics, Morgoth - Politics, Morgoth - Accomplishments, Morgoth - Names and titles, Morgoth - Powers, Morgoth - Appearance, Morgoth - Other versions of the legendarium Read more here: » Morgoth: Encyclopedia II - Morgoth - Names and titles |

 | | | Pity: Encyclopedia II - Morgoth - CharacteristicsMelkor initially could take any shape, and at first had a fair appearance, like his fellow Valar. However after he had succeeded in alienating the Ñoldor from Valinor and stealing the Silmarils, he descended in the pits of Angband, and his shape eventually became that of the Dark Lord, the Morgoth: gigantic and terrible to behold. During this time he lost the ability to change shape, and in effect became bound to this one, terrible form. His hands had been burned by the theft of the Silmarils, and never healed. During the one time he ...

 | | | Pity: Encyclopedia II - Morgoth - AccomplishmentsMorgoth played a large role in the creation of Arda: from the start he fought his fellow Valar, even if all his schemes backfired. His unleashing of terrible cold on the waters of Ulmo brought about ice and snow; his horrible fires could not burn the seas, but created the clouds. Yet he was partially victorious: he destroyed the Two Lamps, and distorted the original symmetry of Arda.
Morgoth also begat the race of the Orcs by twisting and distorting Elves, and bred the Dragons, and he also originated the Trolls in perverted mockery of ...
