A body of fiction built up around the dramatic figure of Pontius Pilate, about whom the Christian faithful hungered to learn more than the canonical gospels revealed. Eusebius (Historia Ecclesiae book ii: 7), quotes some early apocryphal accounts that he does not name, which already relate that Pilate fell under misfortunes in the reign of Caligula (AD 37 - 41), was exiled to Gaul and eventually committed suicide there, in Vienne. Other details come from less ...

| | | | Pilates: Encyclopedia II - Pontius Pilate - Pilate's role according to secular accountsAccording to the Christian Gospel accounts, Pilate presided at the trial of Jesus of Nazareth and, despite stating that he found him not guilty of a crime meriting death, handed him over to crucifixion. Pilate is famous primarily as a crucial character in the New Testament account of Jesus; but most of the information about him comes from the accounts of the 1st century Jewish historiographer Josephus (for more detail, see the entry Josephus on Jesus).
Pilate is said to have displayed a serious lack of empathy for Jewish sensibilities, for example by displaying Roman battle standards. The ...

| | | | Pilates: Encyclopedia II - Ablution - Ablution in ChristianityThe Christian practices of baptism and foot-washing are instances of ablution.
Pilate declared himself innocent of the blood of Jesus by washing his hands (Matt. 27:24). This act of Pilate may not, however, have been borrowed from the custom of the Jews. The same practice was common among the Greeks and Romans.
The Pharisees carried the practice of ablution to great excess, thereby claiming extraordinary purity (Matt. 23:25). Mark (7:1-5) refers to the ceremonial ablutions. The Pharisees washed their hands "oft," more correctly ...

| | | | Pilates: Encyclopedia II - April Fool's Day - OriginThe origin of this custom has been much disputed, and many ludicrous solutions have been suggested, e.g. that it is a farcical commemoration of Christ being sent from Annas to Caiaphas, from Caiaphas to Pilate, from Pilate to Herod, and from Herod back again to Pilate, the crucifixion having taken place about the 1st of April.
What seems certain is that it is in some way or other a relic of those once universal festivities held at the vernal equinox, which, beginning on old New Year's day, the 25th of March, ended on the 1st of ...

| | | | Pilates: Encyclopedia II - Swoon hypothesis - 20th centuryMichael Baigent, Richard Leigh and Henry Lincoln, in their 1982 book Holy Blood, Holy Grail, speculated that Pontius Pilate was bribed to allow Jesus to be taken down from the cross before he was dead. In 1992, Barbara Thiering explored the theory in depth in her book Jesus and the Riddle of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Other 20th-century proponents of various "swoon theories" include:
Ernest Brougham Docker (1920, in If Jesus Did Not Die on the Cross)

| | | | Pilates: Encyclopedia II - Tiberius - Continuing legacyIn the Bible, Tiberius is mentioned by name only once, in Luke 3:1 (stating that John the Baptist entered on his public ministry in the fifteenth year of his reign). However, since it was during his reign that Jesus preached, many references to Caesar (or the emperor in some other translations), without further specification, actually refer to Tiberius. It was during the reign of Tiberius that Jesus was put to death by crucifixion under the authority of the Roman governor of Judea at the time, Pontius Pilate.
The town Tiberias on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee wa ...
