Physical: Encyclopedia II - Plasma physics - Ultracold plasmas

It is also possible to create ultracold plasmas, by using lasers to trap and cool neutral atoms to temperatures of 1 mK or lower. Another laser then ionizes the atoms by giving each of the outermost electrons just enough energy to escape the electrical attraction of its parent ion. The key point about ultracold plasmas is that by manipulating the atoms with lasers, the kinetic energy of the liberated electrons can be controlled. Using standard pulsed lasers, the electron energy can be made to correspond to a temperature of as low as 0 ...

Physical: Encyclopedia II - Physical quantity - Extensive and intensive quantities

A quantity is called: extensive when its magnitude is additive for subsystems (volume, mass, etc.) intensive when the magnitude is independent of the extent of the system (temperature, pressure, etc.) Some extensive physical quantities may be prefixed in order to further qualify their meaning: specific is added to refer to the quantity divided by its mass (such as specific volume) molar is added to refer to the q ...

Physical: Encyclopedia II - Theoretical physics - Fringe theories

Fringe theories include any new area of scientific endeavor in the process of becoming established and some proposed theories. It can include speculative sciences. This includes physics fields and physical theories presented in accordance with known evidence, and a body of associated predictions have been made according to that theory. Some fringe theories go on to become an widely accepted part of physics. Other fringe theories end up being disproven. Some fringe theories are a form of protoscience and others are a form of pseudoscience. The falsification of the original ...

Physical: Encyclopedia II - Game physics - Particle systems

A common aspect of computer games that model some type of conflict is the explosion. Early computer games used the simple expediency of repeating the same explosion in each circumstance. However, in the real world an explosion can vary depending on the terrain, altitude of the explosion, and the type of solid bodies being impacted. Depending on the processing power available, the effects of the explosion can be modeled as the split and shattered components are propelled by the expanding gas. This is modeled by means of a particle syst ...

Physical: Encyclopedia II - Particle physics - Subatomic particles

Modern particle physics research is focused on subatomic particles, which have less structure than atoms. These include atomic constituents such as electrons, protons, and neutrons (protons and neutrons are actually composite particles, made up of quarks), particles produced by radiative and scattering processes, such as photons, neutrinos, and muons, as well as a wide range of exotic particles. Strictly speaking, the term particle is something of a misnomer. The objects studied by particle physics obey the principles of quantu ...

Physical: Encyclopedia II - Cross section physics - Nuclear physics

In nuclear physics, it is found convenient to express probability of a particular event by a cross section. Statistically, the centers of the atoms in a thin foil can be considered as points evenly distributed over a plane. The center of an atomic projectile striking this plane has geometrically a definite probability of passing within a certain distance (r) of one of these points. In fact, if there are n atomic centers in an area A of the plane, this probability is (nπr2)/A, which is simply the ratio of the aggregate area ...

Physical: Encyclopedia II - Spin physics - History

Wolfgang Pauli was possibly the most influential physicist in the theory of spin. Spin was first discovered in the context of the emission spectrum of alkali metals. In 1924 Pauli introduced what he called a "two-valued quantum degree of freedom" associated with the electron in the outermost shell. This allowed him to formulate the Pauli exclusion principle, stating that no two electrons can share the same quantum numbers. The physical interpretation of Pauli's "degree of freedom" was initially unknown. Ralph Kronig, one of Landé's a ...
