Philately: Encyclopedia II - German South-West Africa - Philately

Philatelic history started on 7 July 1888 at Otjimbingwe, when regular postal service began using German postage stamps and postmarks reading "OTYIMBINGUE". The service continued in this fashion for a number of years, eventually expanding to additional post offices. The first issue for the colony consisted of overprints applied to German stamps in May 1897, reading "Deutsch- / Südwest-Afrika" at an angle. On 15 November 1898, the overprint was changed to See also:

Philately: Encyclopedia II - Heligoland - Philately

During the period when Heligoland was a British possession, about 20 postage stamps were issued between 1867 and 1890. They have the distinction of being the first multi-coloured stamps and are still considered attractive by collectors. [1] There were up to eight printings of a single denomination and also a large volume of reprints which are known as the Berlin, Leipzig and Hamburg Reprints, respectively. The Berlin reprints are sometimes better quality than the originals. The reprints were done between 1875 and 1895. Consequently many "old ...

Philately: Encyclopedia II - Postage stamps and postal history of India - Postal history of India

The usage of the stamps began on 1 July 1852 in Scinde district, with the use of an embossed pattern on paper or wax. The shape was circular, with "SCINDE DISTRICT DAWK" around the rim, leading to the common name "Scinde Dawk". The paper was either white or blue, and the wax version on red wax, but all had the same value of 1/2 anna. They were used until October 1854, and then officially suppressed. These are quite scarce today, with prices from US$700 to $10,000. 1854 was the year of the first issue for all of India. The stamps were ...

Philately: Encyclopedia - Commemorative stamp

A commemorative stamp is a postage stamp issued to honor or commemorate a place, event or person. Most postal services of the world issue several of these each year, often holding first day of issue ceremonies at locations connected with the subjects. Commemorative stamps are usually used alongside ordinary or regular-issue stamps of the time, although in some cases their use has been obligatory. There are several candidates for the title of first commemorative. The United States 15-cent black stamp of 1866 depicts Abraham Linc ...

Philately: Encyclopedia - Want list

In stamp collecting, a want list is simply a list of postage stamps that the collector is seeking to acquire. They are the major tool by which collectors organize the construction of a collection, and stamp dealers frequently advertise to collectors to "send us your want lists". Since most major countries have by now issued from 1,000 to 6,000 types of stamps, it usually difficult for even a single-country collector to remember what is still missing from a collection. Still, most stamps are cheap, and collectors frequently get ...

Some collectors choose to focus on a specific subtopic within their area of general interest, for example 19th Century postage stamps, milk bottle labels f ...

Philately: Encyclopedia - -phil-

Suffixes with the common part -phil- (-phile, -philia, -philic) are used to specify some kind of attraction or affinity to something, in particular the love or obsession with something. They are antonymic to suffixes -phob-. Phil- may also be used as a prefix with a similar meaning. Philia (φιλία) as a Greek word for love refers to brotherly love, including friendship and affection. This contrasts to the Greek terms Eros, or sexual/romantic love, and agapē, or detached, spiritual ...

Philately: Encyclopedia II - Postage stamp color - Shades and color changes

Color shades have several different causes. The printer may use a different ink; in the early days, inks were made up in batches as needed, and were rarely consistent. In such cases, the shade provides information about when the stamp was made, and possibly even identify a particular printing. Extreme variations may be considered color errors; for instance, the 4c value of the US Columbian Issue of 1893 was normally printed in ultramarine, but a handful were printed in blue, a shade with distinctly more green; ...

Philately: Encyclopedia II - Postal authority - History

In medieval times, posts were controlled by rulers and indeed a public post was almost unheard of. If a common person wanted to send a letter to someone in a distant town, he had to rely on a traveller to take it there, usually for a small fee. It might be possible, if the sender had sufficient influence, to have his letter delivered by a royal courier or perhaps by a merchant. Royal and merchant posts ...

Philately: Encyclopedia II - Local post - Official local posts

Government local posts go back to at least 1680, when the Penny Post was established in London to handle intra-city mail delivery at a uniform rate of one penny. Later on, when postage stamps were first introduced, special stamps were often issued; for instance the cantons of Switzerland issued stamps for use within a canton, and inscribed them "Poste-Local" or "Orts-Post". The Russian province of Wenden issued stamps for a local post from 1862 to 1901, while Nicaragua issued stamps for Z ...

Many collectors specialize their collecting interest to narrow the number of possible stamps to collect. Some of the more popular collecting areas include: Postage stamps - particular countries and/or time periods Postal stationery - includes government-issued post cards, aerograms, air letter sheets, etc.; interestingly, the earliest postal stationery predates the earliest stamps- the Kingdom of Sardinia issued ...
