Phenomenology: Encyclopedia - Phenomenology

Phenomenology is a current in philosophy that takes the intuitive experience of phenomena (what presents itself to us in conscious experience) as its starting point and tries to extract the essential features of experiences and the essence of what we experience. It stems from the School of Brentano and was mostly based on the work of the 20th century philosopher Edmund Husserl, and was developed further by philosophers such as Martin Heidegger, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Max Scheler, Hannah Arendt, and Emmanuel Levinas. As such, phenomeno ...

Phenomenology: Encyclopedia II - Phenomenology - Realist phenomenology
After Husserl's publication of the Ideen in 1913, many phenomenologists took a critical stance towards his new theories. Especially the members of the Munich group distanced themselves from his new transcendental phenomenology and preferred the earlier realist phenomenology of the first edition of the Logical Investigations. Realist phenomenologists include: Adolf Reinach, Alexander Pfänder, Johannnes Daub ...

Phenomenology: You Are The Father And Son Of God

Knowledge is divided between phenomenology, science of the changeable and ontology, science of the unchangeable. Ontology is the realm of being and phenomenology that of becoming.

To explain it to the laity, Christianity uses the word 'Father' for ontology and 'Son' for phenomenology. The Holy Spirit is individualised consciousness that mediates the two.

Phenomenology: Encyclopedia II - Phenomenology - Existential phenomenology

Existential phenomenology differs from transcendental phenomenology by its rejection of the transcendental ego. Merleau-Ponty objects to the ego's transcendence of the world, which for Husserl leaves the world spread out and completely transparent before the conscious. Heidegger thinks of conscious being as always and already in the world. Transcendence is maintained in existential phenomenology to the extent that the method of phenomenology must take a presuppositionless starting point - transcending claims about the world arising from, for example, natural or scientific at ...

Phenomenology: Encyclopedia - Contemporary philosophy

The term contemporary philosopher refers not just to figures who are alive, but also those who passed away within the past three decades, irrespective of when their major works were written or when their work was most popular. Similarly, "contemporary philosophical movements" may refer to philosophies that have actually been under discussion for several decades. It is almost always difficult, some would say impossible, to describe the shape of any particular era while it is happening. Controversy does not imply later imp ...

Phenomenology: Encyclopedia - Reality

Reality in everyday usage means "everything that exists." The term "Reality," in its most liberal sense, includes everything that is, whether or not it is observable, accessible or understandable by science, philosophy, theology or any other system of analysis. Reality in this sense may include both being and nothingness, whereas "existence" is often restricted to being. (Compare with nature). In the strict sense of European-German philosophy, there are levels or gradation to the nature and conception of reality. These levels include, from the most subjective to the most rigorous: Phenomenological reality ...

Phenomenology: Encyclopedia - Person

Person, in the classic sense, refers to a living human being. However, in philosophy, there has been debate over the precise meaning and correct usage of the term, whether the classical definition should be expanded or in some cases reduced, and which constituent elements or criteria must exist to establish personhood. Person - Are all persons human?. Firstly, there is the simple and traditional view that the common usage is the correct one: that "person" does indeed mean "human". However, this runs ...
