Pharyngitis: Encyclopedia II - Lancelet - Physical features

In common with the vertebrates, lancelets have a nerve cord running along their back, pharyngeal gill slits and a tail that runs past the anus. Also like humans, muscles are banded. Unlike the vertebrates however the dorsal nerve chord is not protected by bone, but a rather simpler notochord made up of a cylinder of cells that are closely-packed to form a toughened membrane. The lancelet notochord, unlike the vertebrate spine, extends into the head. This gives the subphylum its name ("cephalo-" meaning "relating to the head"). The lancelets ...

Pharyngitis: Encyclopedia II - Voiceless uvular fricative - In other languages

Several languages spoken on the northwest coast of North America have both labialized and non-labialized fricatives, including the Alsean, Salishan (Bella Coola, Klallam), Athabaskan (Chilcotin), and Wakashan languages (Nootka). Oowekyala, a Wakashan language, has labial and non-labial voiceless uvular fricatives in addition to having a voiceless pharyngeal fricative, and labial and non-labial velar fricatives. Most variants of German realize the phoneme /x/ using this sound. It is commonly refered t ...

The Semitic letter ח (khêt) probably represented the voiceless pharyngeal fricative (IPA /ħ/). The form of the letter probably stood for a fence. Ju/’hoan has four tones. There are 5 vowel qualities, [i e a o u]. Pharyngitis: Encyclopedia II - Control of respiration - Ventilatory Pattern

Respiration is normally autonomic, with only limited voluntary override, but an exception to this is Ondine's curse, where autonomic control is lost. The pattern neuronal firing when breathing can be divided into inspiratory and expiratory phases. Inspiration shows a sudden ramp increase in motor discharge to the inspiratory muscles (including pharyngeal dilator muscles). Before the end of inspiration, there is a decline in motor discharge. Expirati ...

Pharyngitis: Encyclopedia II - Egyptian language - Structure of the language

Egyptian is a fairly typical Afro-Asiatic language. At the heart of Egyptian vocabulary is a root of three consonants. Sometimes there were only two, for example /r'/ "sun" (where the apostrophe represents a voiced pharyngeal fricative); others, such as /nfr/, which means beautiful; and some could be as large as five /sxdxd/ "be upside-down". Vowels and other consonants were then added to this root in order to derive words, in the same way as Arabic, Hebrew, and other Afro-Asiatic languages do today. However, we do not know what these vowels ...

Chilcotin language - Consonants. Chilcotin has 47 consonants: Like many Athabaskan languages, Chilcotin does not have a contrast between fricatives and approximants. The alveolar series is pharyngealized. Pharyngitis: Encyclopedia II - Shell dwellers - Diet

Shell dwellers are carnivores that promarily feed on zooplankton and other microscopic and near-microscopic foods. Cichlids' distinctive pharyngeal teeth, in the throat of the fish, are present in shell dwellers, though small. Armed with those and the usual teeth along with the typical dissolving qualities of water shell dwellers can eat a variety of foods in the wild and in captivity. Many species have been known to pull small snails from their shells to eat, to catch and devour the fry of other f ...

Pharyngitis: Encyclopedia II - Tigrinya language - Sounds and orthography

Tigrinya language - Consonant and vowel phonemes. Tigrinya has a fairly typical set of phonemes for an Ethiopian Semitic language. That is, there is a set of ejective consonants and the usual seven-vowel system. Unlike many of the modern Ethiopian Semitic languages, Tigrinya has preserved the two pharyngeal consonants which were apparently part of the ancient Ge'ez language and which, along with the velar or uvular ejective fricative [x'] make it easy to distinguish spoken Tigrinya from related languages such as Amharic, though not from ...

Pharyngitis: Encyclopedia II - Lymphogranuloma venereum - Signs and symptoms

The clinical manifestation of LGV depends on the site of entry of the infectious organism (the sex contact site) and the stage of disease progression. Inoculation at the mucous lining of external sex organs (penis and vagina) can lead to the inguinal syndrome named after the formation of buboes or abscesses in the groin (inguinal) region where draining lymph nodes are located. The rectal syndrome arises if the infection takes place via the rectal mucosa (through anal sex) and is mainly characterized by proctocolitis symptoms. The pharyngeal syndrome is rare, starts after infectio ...

Pharyngitis: Encyclopedia II - Amphibian - History of amphibians

Amphibians developed with the characteristics of pharyngeal slits/gills, a dorsal nerve cord, a notochord, and a post-anal tail at different stages of their life. They have persisted since the dawn of tetrapods 390 million years ago in the Devonian period, when they were the first four-legged animals to develop lungs. During the following Carboniferous period they also developed the ability to walk on land to avoid aquatic competition and predation while allowing them to travel from water source to water source. As a group they maintained th ...

Pharyngitis: Encyclopedia II - IgA nephropathy - Signs and symptoms

The classic presentation (in 40-50% of the cases) is episodic frank hematuria which usually starts within a day of an upper respiratory tract infection (sore throat)(hence syn=together, pharyngitis=sore throat, as opposed to post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis). Flank pain can also occur. The frank hematuria resolves after a few days, though the microscopic hematuria persists. These episodes occur on an irregular basis, and in most patients, this eventually stops (although it can take many years). Renal function usually remains normal, though rarely, acute renal failure may occur(see below ...
