Peter Pan: Encyclopedia II - Peter Pan - Adaptations
Peter Pan has been adapted for stage and screen many times. Following the example of Barrie's original stage version, and for practical reasons (and perhaps tradition), Peter usually - but not always - has been played by an adult woman. Paramount Pictures released the first film version of Peter Pan in 1924, a silent movie starring Betty Bronson as Peter and Ernest Torrence as Hook. Barrie selected Bronson for the role, and wrote additional scenes for it, but the director stuck largely to the stageplay. In 2000, the United States Library of Congress deemed it "culturally significant" and selected it for pr ...

Peter Pan: Encyclopedia II - Peter Pan - Sequels

There have been several additions to Peter Pan's story created, both authorised and not. Gilbert Adair's novel Peter Pan and the Only Children was published in 1987. It has Peter living with a new gang of Lost Boys under the ocean, recruiting children who fall from passing ships as new members. In 1989, Nippon Studios released an anime version, Peeta Pan no Bouken, as part of its World Masterpiece Theater series. The first 23 episodes are a loose adaptation of Barrie's story, while the latter half of the series in ...

Peter Pan: Encyclopedia - Captain Hook

Captain James Hook is the villain of J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan. Hook is a pirate captain and Peter Pan's nemesis. It is said that he was Blackbeard's bosun, and that he was the only man Long John Silver ever feared. He wears an iron hook in place of his right hand, which was cut off by Peter Pan and eaten by a crocodile; the crocodile liked the taste of him so much that it followed him around for the rest of his life, hoping for more. He hates Peter obsessively, and lives for the day he ca ...

Peter Pan: Encyclopedia II - Peter Pan syndrome - Psychology

Many see this syndrome as a very widespread problem in modern, post-industrial society. The Peter-Pan psychological type is one characterized by immaturity or certain sorts of psychological, social and sexual problems. The type of male personality in question is immature and narcissistic. More completely, according to Kiley, the characteristics of a Peter-Pan man-child include such attributes as irresponsiblity, rebelliousness, anger, narcissism, dependency, manipulativeness, and the belief that he is beyond society's laws and norms. ...

Peter Pan: Encyclopedia II - Peter Pan 1953 film - History

Peter Pan 1953 film - Production. Its story is based on the play and novel Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie. Walt had been trying to buy the rights to the play since 1935. He finally received them four years later, after he arranged with the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London (to whom Barrie had bequeathed the rights to the play). His studio started the story development and character designs in the early 1940s as a follow-up to Bambi, but World War II forced the project to be put on hold. Before the w ...

Peter Pan: Encyclopedia II - Narcissism - Schools of Thought

Narcissism - Freud versus Jung. Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) is credited for the first coherent theory of narcissism. He described transitions from subject-directed libido to object-directed libido through the intermediation and agency of the parents. To be healthy and functional, the transitions must be smooth and unperturbed; otherwise neuroses result. Thus, if a child fails to attract their love and attention of his or her desired objects (e.g., of his parents ...

Peter Pan: Encyclopedia II - Narcissism - The Narcissist and his family

Narcissism - An integrative framework. "For very young children, self-esteem is probably best thought to consist of deep feelings of being loved, accepted, and valued by significant others rather than of feelings derived from evaluating oneself against some external criteria, as in the case of older children. Indeed, the only criterion appropriate for accepting and loving a newborn or infant is that he or she has been born. The unconditional love and acceptance experienced in the first year or two of life lay the ...

Peter Pan: Encyclopedia II - Villain - Physical stereotypes

The physical attributes of the villain vary according to the culture and epoch, and are often a fairly straightforward reflection of that culture's current prejudices — racial, political, religious, or otherwise. Just as a hero is often a paragon of the prevailing beauty ideal, a villain often has some physical deformity — perhaps to suggest an equally deformed mind (as in the case of Freddy Kruger), or a rough and violent background (as in the case of Peter Pan's Captain Hoo ...

Peter Pan: Encyclopedia II - Newfoundland dog - Temperament

Newfies have a gentle, placid disposition. They are nicknamed the "Gentle Giant" and "Nature's babysitter." Indeed, the official AKC breed description says "Sweetness of temperament is the hallmark of the Newfoundland; this is the most important single characteristic of the breed." They are protective of children. The dog Nana in James M. Barrie's Peter Pan was a Newfoundland. (Newfie owners resent the depiction of her as a St. Bernard in the Disney animated film version; the 2004 film ...

Peter Pan: Encyclopedia II - Captain Hook - Hook poetry and prose

In 1974, as part of Shel Silverstein's poetry book, Where the Sidewalk Ends, there is a poem about this pirate, though it may be a different Captain Hook, minus his signature hook, because there are no references at all to Peter Pan. The poem goes as follows: Captain Hook must remember Not to scratch his toes. Captain Hook must watch out And never pick his nose. Captain Hook must be gentle When he shakes your hand. Captain Hook mus ...
