peripheral nervous system: Encyclopedia II - Nervous system - Vertebrate nervous systems

The nervous systems of vertebrate animals are often divided into a central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord. The PNS consists of all other nerves and neurons that do not lie within the CNS. The large majority of what are commonly called nerves (which are actually axonal processes of nerve cells) are considered to be PNS. The peripheral nervous system is divided into ...

peripheral nervous system: Encyclopedia II - Optic nerve - Anatomy

The optic nerve is the second of twelve paired cranial nerves but is considered to be part of the central nervous system as it is derived from an outpouching of the diencephalon during embryonic development. Consequently, the fibers are covered with myelin produced by oligodendrocytes rather than the Schwann cells of the peripheral nervous system. Similarly, the optic nerve is ensheathed in all three meningeal layers (dura, arachnoid, and pia mater) rather than the epineurium, perineurium, and endoneurium found in peripheral nerves. This is ...

peripheral nervous system: Encyclopedia II - Anticholinergic - Effects

When a significant amount of anticholinergic is taken into the body, a toxidrome known as acute anticholinergic syndrome may result. This may happen accidentally or intentionally as a form of recreational drug use. This class of drug is usually considered the least "fun" by experienced drug users. Because most users do not enjoy the experience, they don't use it anymore, or very rarely. Risk of add ...

peripheral nervous system: Encyclopedia II - Neuron - Anatomy and histology

Many highly-specialized types of neurons exist, and these differ widely in appearance. Neurons have cellular extensions known as processes which they use to send and receive information. Neurons are highly asymmetric in shape, and consist of: The soma, or cell-body, is the central part of the cell between the dendrites and the axon. It is where the nucleus is located and is where most protein synthesis occurs. The dendrite, a branching arbor of cellular extensions. Most neurons have multiple dendrites ...

peripheral nervous system: Encyclopedia II - Autonomic nervous system - The Cranial Sympathetics

The cranial sympathetics include sympathetic efferent fibers in the oculomotor, facial, glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves, as well as sympathetic afferent in the last three nerves. The Sympathetic Efferent Fibers of the Oculomotor Nerve probably arise from cells in the anterior part of the oculomotor nucleus which is located in the tegmentum of the mid-brain. These preganglionic fibers run with the third nerve into the orbit and pass to the ciliary ganglion where they terminate by forming synapses with sympathetic motor neurons whose ...

peripheral nervous system: Encyclopedia II - Optic nerve - Physiology

The optic nerve contains 1.2 million nerve fibers. This number is low compared to the roughly 130 million receptors in the retina, and implies that substantial pre-processing takes place in the retina before the signals are sent to the brain through the optic nerve. The blind spot of the eye is produced by the absence of retina where the optic nerve leaves the eye. This is because there are no photoreceptors in this area. ...

peripheral nervous system: Encyclopedia II - Nicotinic acetylcholine receptor - Opening the channel

Nicotinic AChRs may exist in different interconvertible conformational states. Binding of nicotine stabilizes the open and desensitied states. Opening of the channel allows positively charged ions, in particular, sodium and calcium, to enter the cell. The nAChR is permeable to Na+ and K+, and only slightly permeable to Ca++ (Siegel et al., 1999). The amount of sodium and potassium the channels allow through their pores (their conductance) is about 25 pS (Siegel et al., 1999). Neuronal nAChRs permeable ...

peripheral nervous system: Encyclopedia II - Mucopolysaccharidosis - Features

The mucopolysaccharidoses share many clinical features but have varying degrees of severity. These features may not be apparent at birth but progress as storage of glycosaminoglycans affects bone, skeletal structure, connective tissues, and organs. Neurological complications may include damage to neurons (which send and receive signals throughout the body) as well as pain and impaired motor function. This results from compression of nerves or nerve roots in the spinal cord or in the peripheral nervous system, the part of the nervous system that connects the brain and spinal cord to sensory organs such as the eyes and to other ...

peripheral nervous system: Encyclopedia II - Rabies - The virus

The Rabies virus is a Lyssavirus. This genus of RNA viruses also includes the Aravan virus, Australian bat lyssavirus, Duvenhage virus, European bat lyssavirus 1, European bat lyssavirus 2, Irkut virus, Khujand virus, Lagos bat virus, Mokola virus and West Caucasian bat virus. Lyssaviruses have helical symmetry, so their infectious particles are approximately cylindrical in shape. This is typical of plant-infecting viruses; human-infecting viruses more commonly have cubic symmetry and take shapes approximating regular polyhedra. The Lyssaviruses are the only viruses known to travel along the nerves after infection. Biopsy shows typical "Ne ...

peripheral nervous system: Encyclopedia II - Rabies - Prevention

There is no known cure for symptomatic rabies, but it can be prevented by vaccination, both in humans and other animals. Virtually every infection with rabies was historically a death sentence, until Louis Pasteur developed the first rabies vaccination in 1886. Pasteur demonstrated its effectiveness by treating Joseph Meister, who had been bitten by a rabid dog. Pasteur's vaccine consisted of a sample of the virus harvested from infected (and necessarily dead) rabbits, which was weakened by allowing it to dry. Similar nerve tissue-der ...

peripheral nervous system: Encyclopedia II - Rabies - Recently publicised cases

Rabies - Transmission by animal bites. Several recently publicised cases have stemmed from bats, which are known to be a vector for rabies. The United Kingdom, which has stringent regulations on the importation of animals, had also been believed to be entirely free from rabies until 1996 when a single Daubenton's bat was found to be infected with a rabies-like virus usually found only in bats - European Bat Lyssavirus 2 (EBL2). There were no more known cases in the British Isles until September 2002 when a ...

peripheral nervous system: Encyclopedia II - Rabies - Transport of pet animals between countries

Rabies is endemic to many parts of the world, and one of the reasons given for quarantine periods in international animal transport has been to try to keep the disease out of uninfected regions. However, most developed countries, pioneered by Sweden, now allow unencumbered travel between their territories for pet animals that have demonstrated an adequate immune response to rabies vaccination. Such countries may limit movement to animals from countries where rabies is considered to be under control in pet animals. There are various li ...

peripheral nervous system: Encyclopedia II - Rabies - Transmission and symptoms

The stereotypical image of an infected ("rabid") animal is a "mad dog" foaming at the mouth, but cats, ferrets, raccoons, skunks, foxes and bats also become rabid. Squirrels, chipmunks, other rodents and rabbits are very seldom infected, perhaps because they would not usually survive an attack by a rabid animal. Rabies may also be present in a so-called 'paralytic' form, rendering the infected animal unnaturally quiet and withdrawn. The virus is usually present in the saliva of a symptomatic rabid animal; the route of infection is nea ...

peripheral nervous system: Encyclopedia II - Lipid storage disorder - Diagnosis

Diagnosis is made through clinical examination, biopsy, genetic testing, molecular analysis of cells or tissue to identify inherited metabolic disorders and enzyme assays (testing a variety of cells or body fluids in culture for enzyme deficiency). In some forms of the disorder, a urine analysis can identify the presence of stored material. Some tests can also determine if a person carries the defective gene that can be passed on to her o ...

peripheral nervous system: Encyclopedia II - Lipid storage disorder - Lipids

Lipids are fat-like substances that are important parts of the membranes found within and between each cell and in the myelin sheath that coats and protects the nerves. Lipids include oils, fatty acids, waxes, steroids (such as cholesterol and estrogen), and other related compounds. These fatty materials are stored naturally in the body’s cells, organs, and tissues. Minute bodies within the cells called lysosomes regularly convert, or metabolize, the lipids and proteins into smaller components to provide energy for the body. Disorde ...
