Percept: Encyclopedia - Percept

A percept is the resultant of perceiving. It is the representation of an external event that affected the senses and which - by perceptual processing - caused the activation of a certain category in the mind, i.e., the percept. The term percept is typically used in contrast to the terms distal stimulus (the external object) and proximal stimulus (the physical stimulation pattern on the senses, e.g., the pattern of light wavelength pro ...

Percept: Encyclopedia - Perception
In psychology and the cognitive sciences, perception is the process of acquiring, interpreting, selecting, and organizing sensory information. Methods of studying perception range from essentially biological or physiological approaches, through psychological approaches to the often abstract 'thought-experiments' of mental philosophy. Perception - History of the study of perception. Perception is one of the oldest fields within scientific psychology, and there are correspondingly many t ...

Percept: Encyclopedia II - Perception - Perception and reality

Many cognitive psychologists hold that, as we move about in the world, we create a model of how the world works. That is, we sense the objective world, but our sensations map to percepts, and these percepts are provisional, in the same sense that scientific hypotheses are provisional (cf. in the scientific method). As we acquire new information, our percepts shift. Abraham Pais' biography refers to the 'esemplastic' nature of imagination. In the case of visual perception, some people can actually see the percept shift in their mind's eye. Ot ...

Percept: Sense Perception, This and That

"All that belongs to the realm of senses, including thought, constitutes This. What is beyond the reach of our senses and mind is That," said the Guru .

The young, no-nonsense pupil shook his head, unwilling to accept an abstract point. "But, Sir," he queried, "Why should we at all confuse our minds with what is not real?" The Guru smiled. "Can you show me here something that you consider real?" he asked the pupil. "Of course!" replied the pupil and, pointing to a bell that was dangling from the ceiling, said: "This bell, for instance. I say this is real. But if you want me to believe in a second bell which is not here, well, I find it hard to take that."

Percept: Encyclopedia - Veil of perception

In philosophy, the veil of perception is a term used by 18th century philosopher John Locke to describe how we're trapped into seeing the world through our perceptions, and not as it really is. Instead of our "local perception", we would need an objective, or "God's eye view" of the world to be able to perceive reality without the added influence of our perceptual faculties. The veil of perception describes a barrier that prevents first-hand knowledge of anything beyond it. The "veil" exists between the mind and the exis

Percept: Encyclopedia - Visual perception

Visual perception is one of the senses, consisting of the ability to detect light and interpret (see) it as the perception known as sight or naked eye vision. Vision has a specific sensory system, the visual system. There is disagreement as to whether or not this constitutes one, two or even three distinct senses. Some people make a distinction between "black and white" vision and the perception of colour, and others point out that vision using rod cells uses different physical detectors on the retina from ...

Percept: Encyclopedia - Amodal perception

'Amodal perception is the term used to describe the full perception of a physical structure when it is only partially perceived, for example a table will be perceived as a complete volumetric structure even if only part of it is visible, the internal volumes and hidden rear surfaces are perceived despite the fact that only the near surfaces are exposed to view, and the world around us is perceived as a surrounding v ...

Percept: Encyclopedia - Extra-sensory perception

Extra-sensory perception, or ESP, is the name given to any ability to acquire information by means other than the five canonical senses (taste, sight, touch, smell, and hearing), or any other sense well-known to science (balance, proprioception, etc). Because the definition of sense is vague, the precise definition of extra-sensory is as well, but the term is generally used in reference to humans, to imply sources of information unknown to modern science. Extra-sensory perception - Types of ES ...

Percept: Encyclopedia II - Philosophy of perception - Categories of perception

We can categorize perception as internal or external. Internal perception (proprioception) tells us what's going on in our bodies. We can sense where our limbs are, whether we're sitting or standing; we can also sense whether we are hungry, or tired, and so forth. External or Sensory perception (exteroception), tells us about the world outside our bodies. Using our senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste, we ...

Percept: Encyclopedia II - Depth perception - Depth perception in art

Photographs capturing perspective are two-dimensional images that often illustrate the illusion of depth. (This differs from a painting, which may use the physical matter of the paint to create a real presence of depth outwardly.) Trained artists are keenly aware of the above mentioned methods for perceiving depth (color vision, distance fog, perspective and relative sizes). They often take advantage of them to make their works appear real. ...

Percept: Encyclopedia II - Philosophy of perception - The Scientific Account of Perception

The science of perception is concerned with how events are observed and interpreted. An event may be the occurrence of an object at some distance from an observer. According to the scientific account this object will reflect light from the sun in all directions. Some of this reflected light from a particular, unique point on the object will fall all over the corneas of the eyes and the combined cornea/lens system of the eyes will divert the light to two points, one on each retina. The pattern of points of light on each retina forms an image. ...

Percept: Spiritual Dictionary on Extrasensory Perception

Extrasensory Perception: Also written as Extra Sensory Perception, this is a phrase introduced by Dr. J.B. Rhine of the Department of Parapsychology at Duke University. It is used as a general term to describe all sorts of phenomena that cannot be perceived through our usual senses. This includes clairvoyance (seeing things at a distance farther than our normal vision would allow) and clairaudience (hearing things at a greater distance than our normal hearing would allow). These perceptions may not only be from a greater distance, but also from different times or from areas that are not on the physical plane.

Percept: Encyclopedia II - Visual perception - Theoretical perspectives in the study of visual perception

Visual perception - Unconscious inference. Hermann von Helmholtz is often credited with the founding of the scientific study of visual perception. Helmholtz held vision to be a form of unconscious inference: vision is a matter of deriving a probable interpretation for incomplete data. The general goal of vision is to identify, as accurately as possible, the features of our environment: roughly, what objects are present where. Other features are irrelevant to this task : illumination patterns, viewing ...

Percept: Encyclopedia II - Face perception - Adult face perception

Theories about the processes involved in adult face perception have largely come from two sources; research on normal adult face perception and the study of impairments in face perception that are caused by brain injury or neurological illness. One of the most widely accepted theories of face perception2 argues that understanding faces involves several stages; from basic perceptual manipulations on the sensory information to derive details about the person (such as age, gender or attractiveness), to being able to recall meaningful details such as their ...
