The Pentateuch can be contrasted with the Hexateuch, which is the first six books of the Bible. The Pentateuch was supposedly written down by Moses, with Joshua writing the sixth book (Book of Joshua). Hence the Pentateuch was the law of Moses, and followed the Israelites up to the time of their entry to the promised land. The Book of Joshua completes the story, continuing directly from the events of Deuteronomy, and documents the conquest of Canaan. Thus in some ways the six bo ...

* Encyclopedia - Exodus

Exodus is the second book of the Torah (the Pentateuch) and also the Tanakh (the Hebrew Bible), and Christian Old Testament. The major events of the book concern the Exodus, a departure of Hebrew slaves from Egypt, under the leadership of Moses. Jews call the book by its first words Ve-eleh shemoth (i.e., "and these are the names") or simply "Shemoth" שמות. The Septuagint designates the second book of the Pentateuch as "Exodus", meaning "departure" or "out-going". The Latin translation adopted the name, ... Including:

Founded as Rhegion by Greek settlers in the 8th century BC, the city was devastated by several major earthquakes and associated tsunami. * Encyclopedia II - Old Testament - Historicity of the Old Testament

The historicity of the Old Testament has been a matter of debate, particularly since the 19th century when Julius Wellhausen using source criticism claimed to have isolated four strands of tradition behind the Pentateuch (JEDP)(see the documentary hypothesis). The Wellhausen School assigned dates for these strands (and their later editing) from the 10th-5th centuries BCE. Because the composition of the Pentateuch according to Wellhausen was so much later than the events it described, some who accept Wellhausen's documentary hypothesis tend t ...

Hosea prophesied in a difficult period of Israel's history, the period of the Northern Kingdom's decline and fall in the 8th century BC. Hosea was himself a native of the Northern Kingdom, and wrote in a distinctive northern dialect. During Hosea's lifetime, the kings of the Northern Kingdom, their aristocratic supporters, and the priests had led the people in falling away from the Law of God, as given in the Pentateuch. Forsaking the worship of Yahweh, they worshipped other gods, especially Baal, the Canaanite fertility god. Other si ...

Christian Friedrich Heinecken (1721-1725), a German, who was known as the "Infant of Lübeck," from the place where he was born, is said to have talked within a few hours after his birth. Besides his remarkable faculty for numbers, he is said to have known, at the age of one year, all the principal events related in the Pentateuch; at two was well acquainted with historical events of the Bible, and at three had a knowledge of universal history and geography, Latin and French. People came from all parts to see him, and the King of Denm ... Including:

* Encyclopedia II - Haftarah - History

No one knows for certain the origins of reading the haftarah, but several theories have been put forth. The most common explanation, accepted by some traditional Jewish authorities, is that when the Jews were under the rule of the Seleucid king Antiochus IV Epiphanes, they were forbidden from reading the Pentateuch and made do with a substitute. When they were again able to read the Pentateuch, they kept ...

* Encyclopedia II - Universal history - Examples

The first five books of the Bible constitute a primary example of such a history. To the extent that the Pentateuch presents itself as an account of mankind as a whole, from creation to the death of Moses, it is universal history. In the nineteenth century, universal histories proliferated. Philosophers such as Hegel, and political philosophers such as Marx, presented general theories of history that shared essential characteristics with the Biblical account: they conceived of history as a coherent whole, governed by certain ...

613 mitzvot (or 613 Commandments. Hebrew: תרי"ג מצוות transliterated as Taryag mitzvot; TaRYaG is the acronym for the numeric value of "613".) In Judaism there is a tradition that the Torah (i.e. the "Pentateuch") contains 613 mitzvot (mitzvot in Hebrew means "commandments", from mitzvah - מצוה -- "precept", plural: mitzvot; from צוה, tzavah- "command"). According to the main source, of these 613, 248 are mitzvot aseh ("positive commandments") ... Including:
