Parlophone: Encyclopedia II - Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band - The band's foundation

Unusually for a band, the actual date of conception for the Bonzos is known to us: September 25th, 1962. It was on that day that Vivian Stanshall (tuba, but later lead vocals along with other wind instruments) and fellow art student Rodney Slater (saxaphone) bonded over a transatlantic broadcast of a boxing match between Floyd Patterson and Sonny Liston. Rodney Slater had previously been playing in a trad jazz band at college with Chris Jennings (trombone) and Tom Parkinson (sousaphone). Eventually they recruited Roger Wilkes trumpet ...

Parlophone: Encyclopedia II - Cliff Richard - 1958—1963: Success and stardom

The Anglo Indian Harry Webb came from a skiffle group to be lead singer of the rock n roll Drifters in 1958 (not to be confused with the American group of the same name). Before their first "big time" out of town performance at the Regal Ballroom in Ripley they took the name Cliff Richard and the Drifters. The members of this band were Harry, who had become Cliff, Ian "Sammy" Samwell, Terry Smart and Norman Mitham. None o ...

Parlophone: Encyclopedia II - The Beatles - History

In March 1957, John Lennon formed a skiffle group, The Blackjacks, who later became The Quarrymen. On 6 July of that year, Lennon met Paul McCartney through a mutual friend while playing at the Woolton Parish Church Garden Fete, and shortly afterwards, Lennon invited McCartney to join his fledgling group. The lineup that McCartney joined featured Lennon, Eric Griffiths on guitar, Len Garry on "tea-chest" bass, Pete Shotton on "washboard" and Colin Hanton on drums. In February 1958 the young guitarist George Harrison joined the group, which w ...

Parlophone: Encyclopedia II - Feel Good Inc. - Music video

Like most of Gorillaz' visual work, the music video is quite surreal. It features 2D, Russel and a shirtless Murdoc playing the song in a towering brothel (the titular Inc.), which looms over a run-down dystopian landscape. Noodle, playing an acoustic guitar, flies outside on the small floating island which is apparently kept aloft by a windmill and is part of what suspends the brothel in the air. The are many motifs and symbolic and thematic elements throughout the video, many with double-meanings and philosophical properties. 2-D is ...

Parlophone: Encyclopedia II - Beatles for Sale - Writing and recording

When Beatles for Sale was being recorded, Beatlemania was just past its peak; in early 1964, the Beatles had made waves with their television appearances in the United States, sparking unprecedented demand for their records. Beatles for Sale was the Beatles' fourth album in 21 months; recording for the album began on August 11, just two months after the release of A Hard Day's Night, following on the heels of several tours. Much of the production on the album was done on "off days" from performances in the UK, and most o ...

Parlophone: Encyclopedia II - Eleanor Rigby - The story behind the song

Like many of McCartney's songs, the melody and first line of the song came to him as he was playing around on his piano. The name that came to him, though, was not Eleanor Rigby but Miss Daisy Hawkins. In 1966, McCartney recalled how he got the idea for his song: "I was sitting at the piano when I thought of it. The first few bars just came to me, and I got this name in my head... Daisy Hawkins picks up the rice in the church. I don't know why. I couldn't think of much more so I put it away for a day. Then the name Father McCart ...

Parlophone: Encyclopedia II - Apple Records - Releases on the Apple label

The first LP release from Apple Records (also the first "solo" album by a Beatle) was George Harrison's Wonderwall Music, his soundtrack recordings for the movie Wonderwall, on November 1, 1968. Shortly afterward came the Two Virgins album by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, released on November 11. (Both EMI and Capitol Records refused distribution, because John and Yoko were shown naked on the cover; the album was licensed to Track Records in the UK and Tetragrammaton Records in the US.) Two Virgins was closely followe ...

Please Please Me - I Saw Her Standing There. John Lennon - harmony Paul McCartney - lead vocals Written by Paul McCartney Originally titled "Seventeen" Originally written on a Liverpool Institute exercise book Lennon changed "never been a beauty queen" to "you know what I mean". Parlophone: Encyclopedia II - Yesterday song - Origins

According to biographers of McCartney and the Beatles, McCartney composed the entire song in a dream one night at the London flat in Wimpole Street belonging to his then girlfriend, Jane Asher. Upon waking, he hurried to a piano, turned on a tape recorder, and played the tune to avoid letting it slip into the recesses of his mind. McCartney's initial concern was that he had subconsciously plagiarised someone else's work (known as Cryptomnesia). As he put it, "For about a month I went round to people in the music business and asked the ...

Parlophone: Encyclopedia II - The Church - History

The Church - The early days and first album 1980-1981. From the early 1970s, Steve Kilbey and Peter Koppes had played in several glam rock bands in Sydney, Australia. In April 1980 they formed a three-piece with Nick Ward on drums and began performing. After Marty Willson-Piper (hailing from Liverpool) joined them, they took the name 'The Church'. Allegedly, the name was chosen largely because it was unclaimed, but later allusions to the band's spiritual interests by Kilbey hint at it being less than coincidental ...
