Parkinson's: Encyclopedia II - Bob Holness - Broadcasting career

Holness was one of the first actors to portray James Bond, in a 1956 South African radio adaptation of Moonraker, and subsequently he presented a regular show on Radio Luxembourg, but he is perhaps better known as a British game show presenter. Holness joined the BBC as a presenter on Late Night Extra, initially on the BBC Light Programme and later on BBC Radio 1 & 2, presenting alongside people like Terry Wogan, Michael Parkinson & Keith Fordyce. Parkinson's: Encyclopedia II - Characteristica universalis - Controversy and conspiracy

There seems to be a general level of confusion over what the Characteristica Universalis was actually meant to be. This confusion might have been the source of a considerable controversy surrounding this part of Leibniz's project. Many philosophers have considered Leibniz's Characteristica Universalis an absurd fantasy. Consider the following quote from Parkinson (1974) for example, Leibniz’s views about the systematic character of all knowledge are linked with his plans for a universal symbolism, a Characteristica ...

Parkinson's: Encyclopedia II - Encephalitis lethargica - Treatment

Treatment for encephalitis lethargica in the early stages is patient stabilisation, which may be very difficult. There is little evidence so far of a consistent effective treatment for the initial stages, though one patient who was given steroids initially has so far made a good recovery. Other patients have been less fortunate, and the disease then becomes progressive, with evidence of brain damage similar to Parkinson's disease. Treatment is then symptomatic. Levodopa (L-Dopa) and other antiparkinson drugs often produce dramatic responses. However in most of the patients who were given L-Dopa in the 19 ...

Parkinson's: Encyclopedia II - Jay Mohr - Radio

He frequently appears on The Opie and Anthony Show on XM Satellite Radio. Mohr was also one of several guest hosts of The Jim Rome Show, but was asked by the network to refrain from guest-hosting again following a very controversial appearance in 2004. Mohr made vulgar references to the recently-deceased Ronald Reagan and toward Muhammad Ali's battle with Parkinson's disease. Listeners and affiliates alike called Premiere to complain about Mohr's statements, and in turn, he was asked to refrain from accepting the offer to ...

Parkinson's: Alternative Health Dictionary on Crystal healing

crystal healing (crystal therapeutics, crystal therapy, crystal work): Multiform use of crystals (especially quartz crystals) and gemstones to treat such conditions as blindness, bursitis, cancer, depression, forgetfulness, tension headaches, hemorrhages, indigestion, insomnia, Parkinson's disease, rheumatism, and thrombosis.

Its principle is that crystals draw light and color into the body's aura and thus raise its frequency and allow the emergence of lower frequency energies, which are healthful. Crystal healing sometimes is adjunctive to, or a form of: acupressure, aura balancing, chakra healing, color therapy, pendular diagnosis, prayer, and self-healing.

Parkinson's: Encyclopedia II - Public service announcement - PSAs in the United States

Often, a celebrity promotes a foundation and asks for support to be given by viewers or listeners. An example being Michael J. Fox's PSAs in the US supporting research into Parkinson's Disease, from which he suffers. Some are public awareness campaigns, lobbying, for example, against smoking or compulsive gambling. Other times, they are produced by individuals in prison, as a means of "scaring straight" listeners. One PSA was produced by Crips street gang leader Stanley Williams, urging youth listening not to join gangs. Some religious group ...

Parkinson's: Encyclopedia II - Hans Ras - Old age

In 1992 Ras retired at the age of 66. It was not a happy development for him. He missed his work, and his health gradually failed him. He became a grandfather for the first time around the turn of the millennium, but was increasingly afflicted with Parkinson's disease. After an attack of pneumonia in 2000, it was no longer possible to live at home. He was moved to a nursing home in the village of Warmond, near Leiden, in August 2002, where, nursed with loving care by Widjiati till ...

Parkinson's: Encyclopedia II - Calorie restriction - Intermittent Fasting as an alternative approach

Studies by Mark P. Mattson, PhD, chief of the National Institute on Aging's (NIA) Laboratory of Neurosciences, and colleagues have found that intermittent fasting and calorie restriction affect the progression of Huntington's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease in mice (PMID 11119686). In one study, rats and mice ate a low-calorie diet or were deprived of food for 24 hours every other day (PMID 12724520). Both methods improved glucose metabolism, increased insulin sensitivity, and increased stress resistance. Researchers ha ...

Parkinson's: Encyclopedia II - Restless legs syndrome - Treatment

Common medications include dopamine agonists (dopaminergic agents) such as levodopa, ropinirole, sinemet or pergolide, opioids such as propoxyphene or oxycodone, benzodiazepines (which improve quality of sleep), or anticonvulsants (patients who report pain may benefit most) such as gabapentin. In 2005, The Food and Drug Administration approved Requip (ropinirole) to treat moderate to severe Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS). The drug was first approved for Parkinson’s disease in 1997. Some treatments may cause augmentation, where symptoms increase just before medication is taken. Other treatments may result in rebound, ...

Parkinson's: Encyclopedia II - Jeremy Clarkson - Engineering interests

Clarkson is interested in engineering, especially pioneering work, as his television programmes about Brunel and the Colossus computer have shown. Clarkson was awarded an honorary degree from Brunel University on September 12, 2003, partly because of his work in popularising engineering, and partly because of his advocacy of Isambard Kingdom Brunel in the 100 Greatest Britons programme. In April 2004, he appeared on the talk show Parkinson and mentioned that he was writing a book about the soul he believes many machines have. H ...

Parkinson's: Encyclopedia II - Art of Australia - Early Colonial Art

The first depictions of Australia by European artists were mainly "natural-history art", depicting the distinctive flora and fauna for scientific purposes. Sydney Parkinson, the plant draftsperson on James Cook's 1770 voyage that first charted the eastern coastline of Australia, made a large number of such drawings under the direction of naturalist Joseph Banks. Despite Banks' suggestions, no professional natural-history artist sailed on the First Fleet in 1788, so until the turn of the century all drawings made in the colony were by ...
