Parkinson's disease - Cardinal symptoms. Symptoms may vary among patients, and additionally may vary greatly over time in a single patient. However, the cardinal symptoms are: tremor (while this is the best known symptom, it is not displayed by an estimated 30% of patients with little perceptible tremor; these are classified as rigid-akinetic. The classical Parkinsonian tremor is 4-7Hz, often unilateral, decreased by supination and pronation, and responds to dopaminergics and anticholinergics. ...

Parkinson's: Encyclopedia - Tocopherol

Tocopherol, or Vitamin E, is a fat-soluble vitamin in eight forms that is an important antioxidant. Vitamin E is often used in skin creams and lotions because it is believed to play a role in encouraging skin healing and reducing scarring after injuries such as burns. Natural vitamin E exists in eight different forms or isomers, four tocopherols and tocotrienols. All isomers have a chromanol ring, with a hydroxyl group which can donate a hydrogen atom to reduce free radicals and a hydrophobic side chain which allows for ...

Parkinson's: Encyclopedia - Ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase L1

Ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCH-L1) (EC 3.1.2.15) is a deubiqutinating enzyme. A point mutation (I93M) in the gene encoding this protein is implicated as the cause of Parkinson's disease in one kindred. Furthermore, a polymorphism (S18Y) in this gene has been found to be associated with a reduced risk for Parkinson's disease. Parkinson's: Encyclopedia - Alpha-synuclein

Alpha-synuclein is a normal protein found in the brain. It is predominantly a presynaptic neuronal protein of unknown function, but can also be found in glial cells. Recent evidence suggests that alpha-synuclein functions as a molecular chaperone in the formation of SNARE complexes. Normally an unstructured soluble protein, alpha-synuclein can aggregate to form insoluble fibrils in pathological conditions characterized by Lewy bodies, such as Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, and multiple system atrophy. Parkinson's: Encyclopedia - Carbidopa

Carbidopa (MK-486) is a drug given to people with Parkinson's disease in order to inhibit peripheral metabolism of levodopa. It inhibits aromatic-L-amino-acid decarboxylase (DDC), an enzyme important in the biosynthesis of L-tryptamine to 5-HT and in the biosynthesis of L-DOPA to Dopamine (DA). Along with carbidopa, other DDC inhibitors are benserazide (Ro-4-4602), difluromethyldopa, and a-methyldopa. Used in tandem with levodopa (l-dopa, a dopamine precurser converted in the body to dopamine), it increases the plasma half life of levodopa from 50 minutes to 1 1/2 hours.
