Palpation: Encyclopedia - Cryptorchidism

Cryptorchidism is a medical term referring to absence from the scrotum of one or both testes. This usually represents failure of the testis to move, to "descend," during fetal development from an abdominal position, through the inguinal canal, into the ipsilateral scrotum. About 3% of full-term infant boys are born with at least one undescended testis, making cryptorchidism the most common birth defect of male genitalia. A testis absent from the normal scrotal position can be: found anywhere along the "path ...

Palpation: Encyclopedia II - Pyloric stenosis - Diagnosis

Diagnosis is via a careful history and physical examination. Palpation of the abdomen during a test feed may reveal a mass in the epigastrium consisting of the enlarged pylorus (pyloric tumour) with palpable peristaltic waves consisting of the stomach trying to force its contents past the narrowed pylorus. Blood tests will reveal hypochloremic alkalosis secondary to loss of acidic gastric secretions due to persistent vomiting. A pediatric surgeon would typically be able to palpate a pyloric tumour in about 80% of cases. Such a ...

Palpation: Encyclopedia II - Guaifenesin protocol - Treatment details

Guaifenesin protocol - Guaifenesin dosage. The dosage is individually determined by slowly titrating the dosage up until a worsening of symptoms is noticed and there is a decrease of the lesions that can be palpated in the muscles. Patients begin with 300 mg twice a day and increase from there. The guaifenesin should be pure guaifenesin and not a preparation including other medications. Palpation: Encyclopedia II - Cholecystitis - Diagnosis

The classic patient with acute cholecystitis presents with acute right upper quadrant pain, nausea/vomiting, and fever. On physical examination, he or she has a Murphy's sign, which is a diaphragm spasm (due to the intense pain) when the region of the gall bladder is palpated by the examiner. Laboratory values may be notable for an elevated alkaline phosphatase, possibly an elevated bilirubin (although this could indicate choledocholithiasis), and possibly an elevation of the white blood cell count. The degree of elevation of these la ...

Palpation: Encyclopedia II - Needle aspiration biopsy - Procedure

The skin above the area to be biopsied is swabbed with an antiseptic solution and draped with sterile surgical towels. The skin, underlying fat, and muscle is then be numbed with a local anesthetic. After locating the mass for biopsy, using x-rays or palpation, a special needle of very fine diameter is passed through into the mass. The needle may be inserted and withdrawn several times. There are many reasons for this: One needle may be used as a guide, with the other needles placed along it to achieve a more precise position.See also:

Palpation: New Age Spirituality Dictionary on Cranial-Sacral Therapy

Cranial-Sacral Therapy

An offshoot of traditional osteopathic medicine. This work is a diagnostic and healing tool which deals with a very subtle rhythm in the body.

The therapist seeks out, by palpation, the normal, physiological way the rhythm moves manifested through the bones in the head and the rest of the body.

Traditionally used for head and tailbone disfunction, it works well for chronic headaches, whiplash injury, facial or cranial trauma and other sensory, motor and/or intellectual disfunction.

Palpation: Encyclopedia II - Baroreceptor - Arterial Baroreceptors

There are baroreceptors present in the arch of the aorta, and the carotid sinuses of the left and right internal carotid arteries. In some sensitive patients, due to baroreceptors, vigorous palpation of a carotid artery can cause severe bradycardia or even heart arrest. Baroreceptors act to maintain mean arterial blood pressure to allow tissues to receive the right amount of blood. See main article Baroreflex If blood pressure falls, such as in shock, baroreceptor firing rate decreases. Signals from the carotid ba ...

Palpation: Encyclopedia II - Benign prostatic hyperplasia - Diagnosis

Rectal examination (palpation of the prostate through the rectum) may reveal a markedly enlarged prostate. It is dependent on the skills of the doctor. Often, blood tests are performed to rule out prostatic malignancy: elevated prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels suggest prostate cancer. It has to be borne in mind that rectal examination can increase PSA levels in patients without malignancy. Ultrasound examination of the testicles, prostate and kidneys is often p ...

Palpation: Encyclopedia II - Varicocele - Diagnosis

Upon palpation of the scrotum, a non-tender, twisted mass along the spermatic cord is felt (it feels like a bag of worms.) However, the mass may not be able to be felt or obvious, especially when lying down. The testicle on the side of the varicocele may or may not be smaller compared to the other side. Varicocele can be reliably diagnosed with ultrasound, which will show dilatation of the vessels of the pampiniform plexus to greater than 2 mm. The patient being studied should undergo a provocative maneuver, such as a Valsava maneuver ...

Palpation: Encyclopedia II - Equine Exertional Rhabdomyolysis - Symptoms of ER

A horse developing ER will usually begin showing signs right after the begining of exercise, although for mild cases, signs may not be seen until after the horse is cooled out. Signs include reluctance to move, stiffness or shortened gait when the animal if forced to move, and muscle spasms or cramps, with hard, painful muscles (especially the hindquarters) when palpated. Usually there is a correlation between how long it takes the signs to be seen and how severe the bout of ER is, with the m ...

Palpation: Massage Bodywork Dictionary on LYMPH DRAINAGE THERAPY

LYMPH DRAINAGE THERAPY

Lymph Drainage Therapy is unique in that healthcare professionals learn how to palpate the lymphatic flow. As they develop their skills, they can then identify the rhythm, direction, and quality of the lymphatic flow.

Advanced practitioners will be able to precisely map the lymphatic flow to find alternate pathways for drainage. Developed by Bruno Chikly, M.D., Lymph Drainage Therapy evolved from years of training in traditional medicine, Oriental medicine practices, and manual therapies. (Definition provided by The Upledger Institute.)

Palpation: Massage Bodywork Dictionary on NAPRAPATHY

NAPRAPATHY

With influences from osteopathy and chiropractic, this system of treatment uses soft-tissue manipulation to release tension and balance energy flows in the body.

The practitioner uses palpation to explore the tissue, looking for rigid, contracted areas of the body. He then begins repetitive, rhythmic, thrusts to gently stretch the contracted connective tissues.

Sessions usually last 30 minutes, focusing mainly on the ligaments near the spinal column. Diet, exercise, and postural adjustments help improve circulatory and nervous system function.

Palpation: Encyclopedia II - Cervical cancer - Staging

Cervical cancer is staged by the FIGO staging system, which is based on clinical examination, rather than surgical findings. It allows only the following diagnostic tests to be used in determining the stage: palpation, inspection, colposcopy, endocervical curettage, hysteroscopy, cystoscopy, proctoscopy, intravenous urography, and X-ray examination of the lungs and skeleton, and cervical conization. The TNM staging system for cervical cancer is analogous to the FIGO stage. Stage 0 - full-thickness involvement of the epith ...

Palpation: Encyclopedia II - Cancer of the larynx - Diagnosis

Diagnosis is made by the doctor on the basis of a careful medical history, physical examination, and special investigations which may include Chest X-Ray, CT or MRI scans, and tissue biopsy. The examination of the throat requires some expertise, which may require specialist referral. The physical exam includes a systematic examination of the whole patient to assess general health, to look for signs of associated conditions and metastatic disease. The neck and supraclavicular fossa are palpated to feel for cervical adenopathy, other ma ...

Palpation: Massage Bodywork Dictionary on STRAIN, COUNTERSTRAIN

STRAIN / COUNTERSTRAIN

Developed by osteopath Lawrence Jones, this noninvasive treatment helps decrease protective muscle spasms and alleviate somatic dysfunction in the musculoskeletal system.

By using palpation and passive positional procedures, the therapist practicing strain/counterstrain therapy can help restore pain-free movement. The position that relieves the referred pain is held for 90 seconds. After resuming the original position and pressing the trigger point, the referred pain is gone.

Although the client is often asked to bend or twist like a contortionist to secure a comfortable position, for the most part clients report effectiveness of the procedure.

Palpation: Massage Bodywork Dictionary on MYOFASCIAL RELEASE

MYOFASCIAL RELEASE

Myofascial release is the three-dimensional application of sustained pressure and movement into the fascial system in order to eliminate fascial restrictions and facilitate the emergence of emotional patterns and belief systems that are no longer relevant or are impeding progress.

First, an assessment is made by visually analyzing the human frame, followed by the palpation of the tissue texture of various fascial layers. Upon locating an area of fascial tension, gentle pressure is applied in the direction of the restriction.

Myofascial release is an effective therapeutic approach in the relief of cervical pain, back pain, fibromyalgia, scoliosis, neurological dysfunction, restriction of motion, chronic pain, and headaches.

Palpation: Encyclopedia II - Endometrial cancer - Treatment

The primary treatment is surgical. Surgical treatment should consist of, at least, cytologic sampling of the peritoneal fluid, abdominal exploration, palpation and biopsy of suspicious lymph nodes, abdominal hysterectomy, and removal of both ovaries (bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy). Lymphadenectomy, or removal of pelvic and para-aortic lymph nodes, is sometimes performed for tumors that have high risk features, such as pathologic grade 3 serous or clear-cell tumors, invasion of more than 1/2 the myometrium, or extension to the cervix or adnexa. Some ...
