 | | | Oundle School: Encyclopedia II - Bruce Dickinson - Biography

Bruce's formative years were spent as a member of Sidney House, one of the dozen boarding houses at Oundle School. Nicknamed both Bwooth and Gunge, he was frequently teased during his five years there. Peer pressure -- and not the fact that his Aunt (Edith Chandler) was the chief cook -- probably contributed to the catering fiasco which led to expulsion a few months before his A-levels in 1976. As an ethologist, interested in animal behaviour and its relation to natural selection, he popularised the idea that the gene is the principal unit of selection in evolution. This gene point of view also provides a basis for understanding kin selection which was ...

 | | | Oundle School: Encyclopedia II - Independent school UK - Public schoolPublic school in the British Isles is a label applied to leading fee-paying independent schools in England and Wales. In Scotland and Ireland it is not commonly used in this sense for schools in those countries (and indeed in Scotland and Northern Ireland the phrase has long been an alternative name for council schools in the state sector). A public school (in the independent sense) usually teaches children from the ages of 11 (for girls) or 13 (for boys) to 18, and was traditionally a single-sex boarding school, although many now acc ...
