Otis Rush: Encyclopedia II - Duane Allman - Formation of The Allman Brothers Band

The limits of full-time session playing frustrated Duane. The few months in Muscle Shoals were by no means a waste, however, because besides meeting the great artists and other industry professionals he was working with, Duane had rented a small, secluded cabin on a lake and spent many solitary hours there refining his playing. Perhaps most significantly, at FAME Duane got together with R&B and jazz drummer Johnny Lee "Jai Johanny Johannson, Jai, Jaimoe" Johnson, who came there to meet Duane at the urging of the late Otis Redding's manag ...

Otis Rush: Encyclopedia II - Duane Allman - Early years

Duane was born in Nashville, Tennessee. At the age of three, while the family was living near Norfolk, Virginia, his father, Willis, a United States Army sergeant, was murdered on December 26 in a robbery by a veteran he had befriended that day. Geraldine "Mama A" Allman and the boys moved back to Nashville. In 1957 they moved to Daytona Beach, Florida. As a teenager in 1960, Duane was motivated to take up the guitar by the example of his younger brother, Gregg, who had obtained a guitar after hearing a neighbor playing country music standards on an acoustic guitar. Gregg later said that after Duane started playing, "he ...

Otis Rush: Encyclopedia II - Duane Allman - Memorials

After Duane's funeral and a few weeks of mourning, the five surviving members of the Allman Brothers Band carried on with the name, resuming live performances and finishing the recording work interrupted by Duane's passing. They called this next album Eat a Peach for one of Duane's interview lines, in response to the question "How are you helping the revolution?": "I'm hitting a lick for peace, and every time I'm in Georgia, I eat a peach for peace." Released in February 1972, this double album contains a side of live and studio track ...

  • Otis Rush: Encyclopedia II - Blues - Characteristics

Blues - Origins. There are few characteristics common to all blues, because the genre takes its shape from the peculiarities of individual performances.[4] However, some characteristics have been present since before the creation of the modern blues and are common to most styles of African American music. The earliest blues-like music was a "functional expression, rendered in a call-and-response style without accompaniment ...

Otis Rush: Encyclopedia II - Blues - Musical impact

As the origin of the blues scale, the blues has exerted a profound influence on many styles of music. Many jazz, folk or rock performers, such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Bob Dylan and The Red Hot Chili Peppers, have performed significant blues recordings. The blues scale frequently is found in non-blues musical forms, such as popular songs like Harold Arlen's "Blues in the Night", blues ballads like "Since I Fell for You" and "Please Send Me Someone to Love", and even orchestral works like George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in ...

Otis Rush: Encyclopedia II - Stevie Ray Vaughan - Posthumous Recognition

A duet album, Family Style, with his brother, Jimmie Vaughan (also a noted blues-rock guitarist and former member of The Fabulous Thunderbirds) was released in September 1990 after Stevie's death and was a popular hit. 1991's The Sky is Crying was the first of several posthumous Vaughan releases with chart success. Jimmie Vaughan later co-wrote and recorded a song in tribute to his brother and other late blues guitarists, entitled "Six Strings Down". In 1991, Texas governor Ann Richards proclaimed October 3, Vaughan's birthday, to be "Stevie Ray Vaughan Day." This day is often ce ...

Otis Rush: Encyclopedia II - Blues - Social impact

Like jazz, rock and roll and hip hop music, blues has been accused of being the "devil's music" and of inciting violence and other poor behavior.[41] In the early 20th century, the blues was considered disreputable, especially as white audiences began listening to the blues during the 1920s.[42] In the early twentieth century, W.C. Handy was the first to make the blues m ...

Otis Rush: Encyclopedia II - Stevie Ray Vaughan - Equipment

There are many falsities reported about Stevie's stage equipment, but here are the facts, as reported by his guitar technician Rene Martinez, who worked with Stevie's equipment for many years. For guitars, Stevie used some acoustics and a Hamiltone Custom, but he mainly used Fender Stratocasters. His most famous was a Brazilian rosewood Strat that had "1962" stamped on the neck and body, but "1959" written on the pickups. It was not a 1963 in any way. He never used bass frets, but did use "jumbo" Dunlop 6105's. It also had a lefty tre ...
