Origen: Encyclopedia II - Origen - Origen's influence on the later Church
For quite some time, Origen was counted as one of the most important church fathers and his works were widely used in the Church. His exegetical method was standard of the School of Alexandria and the Origenists were an important party in the 4th century debates on Arianism. Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzen, e.g., compiled in their first monastery the Philokalia, a collection of Origen's work, though both of them did ne ...

Origen - Early training. His full name was apparently Origenes Adamantius. He was educated by his father, Leonides, on the Bible and in elementary studies. But in 202 Origen's father was killed in the outbreak of the persecution during the reign of Septimius Severus. Origen wished to follow in martyrdom, but was prevented only by a ruse of his mother. The death of Leonides left the family of nine impoverished when their property was confiscated. Origen, however, was taken under the protection of a woman of ...

Origen: Encyclopedia II - Bible and reincarnation - Origen

Origen, an early Christian theologian who lived during the third century, wrote that "The soul has neither beginning nor end. [They] come into this world strengthened by the victories or weakened by the defeats of their previous existence" (De Principiis). This belief was not unique to Origen; early Christians believed that the soul exists prior to the conception and birth of a person, a belief that many then-popular variants of Greek philosophy accepted. However, this does not in and of itself imply reincarnation, cf. the Morm ...

Origen: Encyclopedia II - Origen - Views

Origen - Philosophical and religious. Origen, trained in the school of Clement and by his father, was essentially a Platonist with occasional traces of Stoic philosophy. He was thus a pronounced idealist, regarding all things temporal and material as insignificant and indifferent, the only real and eternal things being comprised in the idea. He therefore regards as the purely ideal center of this spiritual and eternal world, God, the pure reason, whose creative powers call into being the world with mat ...

Origen: Encyclopedia - Ammonius Saccas

Ammonius Saccas (3rd century AD) was a Greek philosopher of Alexandria, often called the founder of the Neoplatonic school. Of humble origin, he appears to have earned a livelihood as a porter; hence his nickname of "Sack-bearer" (Sakkas, for sakkoforos). The details of his life are unknown. After long study and meditation, Ammonius opened a school of philosophy in Alexandria. His principal pupils were Herennius, the two Origens, Cassius Longinus and Plotinus. As he designedly wrote nothing, and, with the aid of h ...

Origen: Encyclopedia - Bible and reincarnation

Belief in reincarnation is held by many Hindus, Buddhists, and Taoists but such beliefs are held by relatively few Christians, Jews, and Muslims. No mainstream Christian denomination includes reincarnation among their doctrines. The Christian creeds and confession have consistently proclaimed a belief in a single judgement of humanity and in the eschatological hope of the resurrection of the dead. Some small sects, such as the Liberal Cat ...

Origen: Encyclopedia - Ambrose of Alexandria

Ambrose of Alexandria (died about 250 AD) was a friend of Origen. Attracted by Origen's fame as a teacher, he visited his school about 212, and was converted by Origen from the heresy of the Valentinians to the orthodox faith (Eusebius, Church History, VI. xviii. 1). He was a sufferer during the persecution under Maximinus Thrax in 235 (Eusebius of Caesarea, Church History, VI. xxviii.), and is last mentioned in Origen's Contra Celsum ...

Apocatastasis is a Greek word that means: 1) Restoration, re-establishment, renovation 2) Return to a previous condition 3) (Astronomy) Return to the same apparent position, completion of a period of revolution. Apocatastasis has a special meaning in the Christian theology: it is the doctrine of the ultimate reconciliation of good and evil. Origen: Encyclopedia - Atonement Ransom view

The Ransom view of the atonement is a doctrine in Christian theology related to the meaning and effect of the death of Jesus Christ which originated in the early Church, particularly in the work of Origen. The theory teaches that the death of Christ was a ransom paid to Satan in satisfaction of his just claim on the souls of humanity as a result of sin. Origen: Encyclopedia - Celsus

Celsus was a 2nd century opponent of Christianity, known to us mainly through the reputation of his literary work, The True Word (or Account), almost entirely reproduced in excerpts by Origen in his counter-polemic Contra Celsum of 248, seventy years after Celsus wrote. In that year, though the Church was under no widespread persecution, owing to the inertia of the emperor Philip the Arab, the atmosphere was full of conflict. Rome was celebrating the 1000th anniversary of its founding, and imperial aspirations and ideas ...

Origen: Encyclopedia - Epistle to the Hebrews

The Epistle to the Hebrews (abbreviated Heb. for citations) is one of the two most consciously "literary" books in the New Testament. The purity of its Greek was noted by Clement of Alexandria, according to Eusebius (Historia Eccl., VI, xiv), and Origen asserted that that every competent judge must recognize a great difference between this epistle and Paul's (Eusebius, VI, xxv). Although the author is unknown, Hebrews has been dated to shortly after the Pauline ...

A number of religious cults have included castration as a central theme of their practice. These include: The cult of Cybele, in which devotes castrated themselves in ecstatic emulation of Attis: see Gallus. Hijra (India) Some followers of early Christianity such as Origen considered castration as an acceptable way to counter sinful desires of the flesh. Bishop Melito of Sardis (d. ca 180) was a eunuch, according to the church history of Eusebius of Caesarea, though, significantly the word "virgin" was substituted in Rufino's Latin translation of Eusebius. ...

Origen: Encyclopedia - Cross of St. Peter

A St. Peter's Cross is an inverted Latin cross often associated with Satanism. According to popular belief, the cross is a symbol of inverted grace, or falling away from Christ's grace. However, the origin of this symbol comes from the fact that St Peter was crucified upside down, as he felt he was unworthy to be crucified in the same manner that Christ died (upright). It is often used with two keys, symbolizing the keys of heaven. An Alexandrian scholar Origen is the first to report that St. Peter 'was crucified head downward, ...
