Orientation: Encyclopedia II - Orientability - Orientation by a triangulation

Orientability, for surfaces, is easily defined, regardless of whether the surface is embedded in an ambient space or not. Any surface has a triangulation: a decomposition into triangles such that each edge on a triangle is glued to at most one other edge. We can orient each triangle, by choosing a direction for each edge (think of this as drawing an arrow on each edge) so that the arrows go from head to tail as we go around the boundary of the triangle. If we can do this so that in addition triangles sharing an edge have arrows on that edge ...

Orientation: Encyclopedia II - Orientalism - Orientalism in the arts

Orientalism - Imitations of Oriental styles. Similar ambivalence is evident in art and literature. From the Renaissance to the 18th century Western designers attempted to imitate the technical sophistication of Chinese ceramics with only partial success. Chinoiserie is the catch-all term for the fashion for Chinese themes in decoration in Western Europe, beginning in the late 17th century and peaking in waves, especially Rococo Chinoiserie, ca 1740-1770. Early hints of Chinoiserie appear, in ...

Orientation: Encyclopedia - Affectional orientation

Affectional orientation is an alternative term for sexual orientation. Those people who prefer it argue that one's orientation goes far beyond sexuality. To holders of this view, one's orientation is defined by whom one is predisposed to fall in love with, sexual attraction being only a part of a larger dynamic. The term is also used by those who consider themselves asexual to describe the gender or genders they are romantically attracted to. The terms used for different affectional orientations are typically the same as are used fo ...

Orientation: Encyclopedia - Aspect-oriented programming

In software engineering, the programming paradigm of aspect-oriented programming (AOP), also called aspect-oriented software development (AOSD), attempts to aid programmers in the separation of concerns, or the breaking down of a program into distinct parts that overlap in functionality as little as possible. In particular, AOP focuses on the modularization and encapsulation of cross-cutting concerns. Gregor Kiczales and his team at Xerox PARC originated this concept. This team also d ...

Orientation: Encyclopedia II - Orientalism - History of Orientalism

It is difficult to be precise about the origin of the distinction between the "West" and the "East". However the rise of both Christianity and Islam produced a sharp opposition between European Christendom and the Muslim cultures to the East and in North Africa. During the Middle Ages Islamic peoples were demonised as "alien" enemies of the Christian world. European knowledge of cultures further to the East was very sketchy indeed. Nevertheless, there was a vague awareness that complex civilisations existed in India and China, from which lux ...

Orientation: Encyclopedia II - Orientalism - Edward Said and Orientalism

Despite this often mixed tradition, the word "Orientalism" carried no negative freight. Respected institutions like the Oriental Institute of Chicago or the London School of Oriental and African Studies carried the term without reproach. "Oriental" was simply understood as the opposite of "occidental" ('western'). The word began to develop negative connotations following the publication of the groundbreaking work Orientalism by the Palestinian scholar Edward Said. Following the ideas of Michel Foucault, Said emphasized the relationshi ...

Orientation: Encyclopedia II - Orienteering - History

Orienteering originated in Scandinavia, as a military exercise, in the 19th century. The competitive sport form began in Norway where the first competition was held near Oslo in 1897. It gained popularity with the development of more reliable compasses in the 1930s. Orienteering started to spread to countries outside Scandinavia in the 1960s. Orientation: Encyclopedia II - Orientability - Orientation by top-dimensional forms

Another way of thinking about orientability is thinking of it as a choice of "right handedness" vs. "left handedness" at each point in the manifold. Formally, a n-dimensional differentiable manifold is called orientable if it possesses a differential form ω of degree n which is nonzero at every point on the manifold. Conversely, given such a form ω, we say th ...
