Ordinary People: Mysticism Magick Dictionary on IMMORTALITY

IMMORTALITY

The fourth and shallowest of ego desires. The difference between the initiate and the ordinary person is that the initiate knows that he, along with everything in the universe, is already immortal. Ordinary people see the truth in such ideas but choose to live as if the illusion of commonplace, middle-class job and family are more "practical" or "real" than metaphysical truth.

Ordinary People: Encyclopedia II - Heraldry - Charges

Main article: Charge Charges can be animals, objects or geometric constructs (ordinaries). Common animals are lions, leopards, martlets, eagles, gryphons, fish, boars or dolphins. There are dragons and unicorns as well, but they are not nearly as common as most people suppose. Possibly the rarest animal in heraldry is found in the coat of arms of Maidstone, Kent, which bears an iguanodon rampant on the dexter side. An animal shown langue (with its tongue stickin ...

Ordinary People: Massage Bodywork Dictionary on HOLOTROPIC BREATHWORK

HOLOTROPIC BREATHWORK

Developed by Dr. Stanislov Grof, a psychiatrist working with people in non-ordinary states of consciousness, and by Christina Grof, a transpersonal teacher, this is a simple, yet powerful technique for self-exploration and healing based on combined insights from modern consciousness research, depth psychology, and perennial spiritual practices.

The method activates non-ordinary states of consciousness which mobilize the spontaneous healing potential of the psyche. Sustained effective breathing, evocative music, focused energy work, and mandala drawing are components of this subjective journey.

Holotropic literally means moving toward wholeness. Virtually all ancient and native traditions recognize the psychological and spiritual healing potential of states of consciousness that differ from what we call ordinary.

Holotropic Breathwork is a powerful method of self-exploration and healing. This work can be useful for artists wishing to facilitate their creativity, persons seeking a deep level of healing, those seeking to explore their inner self and/or the transpersonal dimensions, and it can lead to a spiritual opening and transformation.

Ordinary People: Mysticism Magick Dictionary on FAIRY

FAIRY

One of the reasons that "fairy" became a derogatory epithet for homosexual is that ordinary society pretends to pride itself on its own ordinariness and lack of originality and is afraid to confess any interest in the possibility of the extraordinary. Beyond that, the Celtic Irish believe(d) that the "little people" inhabit a beautiful land of "the ever young". These and similar notions led to the natural association of one with the other. Wm. Butler Yeats and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, however, claimed to have incontrovertible evidence in support of the existence of fairies. More recently, Jacques Vallée has advanced the idea that today's ufos are the descendents of yesterday's fairies.

Ordinary People: Encyclopedia II - Teachings of Opus Dei - Lay spirituality in ordinary life

One of the distinctive features of Opus Dei is it's stress of lay spirituality - a spiritual life for lay people living an everyday life and doing ordinary work. Escriva takes decided position against the concept of having an interior spiritual life and a separate "not spiritual" professional, social, and family life. According to Opus Dei, Opus Dei's spirituality commits lay people to sanctify themselves in the same place where they were before they met Opus Dei a ...

Ordinary People: Encyclopedia II - Horse gait - The ordinary gaits

Some people count these as three gaits, combining the canter and the gallop, considering the gallop a variation of the canter. Others count them as four gaits, separating the canter and the gallop. In increasing order of speed, the ordinary gaits are: walk, trot, canter, and gallop. Only two gaits are natural to wild horses: the walk and the gallop. The trot and the canter have been developed in horses through domestication, breeding, and training ...

Ordinary People: Encyclopedia II - Guess 2/3 of the average - Experimental results

This game is a common demonstration in game theory classes, where even economics graduate students fail to guess 0. When performed among ordinary people it is usually found that the winner guess is much higher than 0, e.g., 21.6 was the winning value in a large internet-based competition organized by the Danish newspaper Politiken. This included 19,196 people and with a prize of 5000 Danish krones. [1] This result is taken as an example that people are not capable of the extended elimination of domina ...

Ordinary People: Encyclopedia II - Bullshit - The uses of bullshit

Bullshit is commonly employed in situations where truth and accuracy are far less important than the ability to achieve a suitable response in the audience. In many cases, such a response is the gaining of popularity or favour (often needed in politics, religion or advertising). More mundane examples of bullshit often involve the lives of ordinary people. For example, it is not at all uncommon to hear of people "bullshitting" a job interview, or attributing their performance in an examination to their ability to bullshit. In this sense, bull ...

Ordinary People: Encyclopedia II - Plyler v. Doe - Summary

1975 Revisions to education laws in Texas allowed the state to withhold state funds for educating children of illegal aliens. The Court found that this policy was in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment, as undocumented immigrants and their children are people "in any ordinary sense of the term", and therefore have protection from discrimination. Since the law disadvantaged the children of the undocumented by denying them funds for an effective education, the Court struck down the law. This case was decided together with Texas v. Certain Named and Unnamed Ali ...

Ordinary People: Encyclopedia II - Daoji - History

He was a monastic at Ling Yin Temple near Hangzhou. Even though his eccentric behavior broke the rules of the vinaya (traditonal code for monastics), Daoji had a kind heart and was always ready to lend a helping hand to ordinary people. Unlike a traditonal Buddhist monk, he ate meat and drank wine. The monks then had enough of his behavior and kicked him out of the monastery. From then on, Daoji roamed the streets and helped people whenever he could. While cultivating in the Buddha's teaching, Daoji acquired magical powers. Since many people noticed his compassionate nature, many started thinking of him as a incarnate of a bodhisattva, ...

Ordinary People: Encyclopedia II - Price gouging - Criticism of price gouging

In a market economy, laws against price gouging are justified by many as a valid exercise of the police power to preserve order during an emergency, and may be combined with anti-hoarding measures. The usual argument is fourfold. The community as a whole may well possess sufficient stocks to sustain it through the emergency, provided that panic can be avoided. Sharp increases in price may trigger such panic. When people's resources are strained by a situation beyond ordinary prudence, the corrective tendencies of the ma ...

Ordinary People: Encyclopedia II - People's Republic of China - Transportation

Transportation in the mainland of the People's Republic of China has improved remarkably starting in the late 1990s as part of a government effort to link the entire nation through a series of expressways known as the National Trunk Highway System. Private car ownership is increasing but remains uncommon, in large part due to government policies designed to make car ownership expensive through the use of taxes and toll roads. Air travel has increased considerably, although remains out of reach for most ordinary mainland Chinese. Long ...
