Olof Palme: Encyclopedia II - John Ausonius - History

Wolfgang Zaugg grew up in Vällingby, a working class suburb to Stockholm. As a child of German immigrants, he was bullied in his youth because of his black hair and dark complexion. As an adult, he dyed his hair blonde and legaly changed his name, first to John Wolfgang Alexander Stannerman, and later to John Ausonius to disguise his non-Swedish last name. He went to the German school in Stockholm, a private school, but dropped out before graduating. He later completed his secondary school education in an adult education programme and managed to get accepted to the Royal Institute of Technology, but dropped out after ...

The area was made up of farmlands and some forests dominated the area. The area was of mixed farming which included pastures, vegetables and groves. Although he spent most of his childhood in Soweto, he matriculated at Mphaphuli High School in Sibasa, Venda, in 1971. Sweden - Pre-history. For details, see: Prehistoric Sweden Soon after the recession of the last ice age, Sweden became populated by hunters and gatherers, during the Stone Age (6000 BC – 4000 BC). The region developed rather slowly compared to southern Europe; while the Romans wrote poetry, Scandinavia had just entered the Iron Age. Sweden was first mentioned in the 1st century, by Roman historian Tacitus, who wrote that the Suiones tribe lived out in the sea and were powerful in both arms ...

Olof Palme: Encyclopedia II - Conspiracy theory - Origins of conspiracy theories

Humans naturally respond to events or situations which have had an emotional impact upon them by trying to make sense of those events, typically in spiritual, moral, political, or scientific terms. Events which seem to resist such interpretation—for example, because they are, in fact, unexplainable—may provoke the inquirer to look harder for a meaning, until one is reached that is capable of offering the inquirer the required emotional satisfaction. As sociological historian Holger Herwig found in studying German explanations of W ...

Olof Palme: Encyclopedia II - Conspiracy theory - Overview

The term "conspiracy theory" may be a neutral descriptor for a conspiracy claim. However, conspiracy theory is also used to indicate a narrative genre that includes a broad selection of (not necessarily related) arguments for the existence of grand conspiracies, any of which might have far-reaching social and political implications if true. Many conspiracy theories are false, or lack enough verifiable evidence to be taken seriously, raising the intriguing question of what mechanisms might exist in popular culture that lead to t ...

Olof Palme: Encyclopedia II - State terrorism - Methods of state terror

Unfair trials, torture, terror bombing, and extrajudicial execution are said to be common practices of state terror, often used to terrorize domestic populations by sovereign or proxy regimes. Citizens of Western nations are generally protected from unfair trial by constitutional or legislative safeguards and the requirements of due process, although recently in the United States, Supreme Court intervention was required to uphold such safeguards, as in the 2004 case of Hamdi v. Rumsfeld. Undeveloped nations may have weaker institution ...

The Social Democratic Youth League was formed in 1917, after the previous social democratic youth organization, Socialdemokratiska Ungdomsförbundet (SDUF, Social Democratic Youth League) broke with the party and formed Sverges Socialdemokratiska Vänsterparti (Social Democratic Left Party of Sweden), that would (after several splits and name changes) eventually become the Left Party of today. Olof Palme: Encyclopedia II - Bruno Kreisky - Kreisky's legacy

Today, Kreisky's premiership is still the subject of controversy. Many of his former supporters see in Kreisky the last socialist of the old school and look back nostalgically at an era when the standard of living was noticeably rising, when the welfare state was in full swing and when, by means of a state-funded programme promoting equality of opportunity (Chancengleichheit), working class children were encouraged to stay on at school and eventually receive higher education, all this resulting in a d ...

Olof Palme: Encyclopedia II - John Ausonius - Media

The journalist Gellert Tamas wrote a book about the case, Lasermannen - en berättelse om Sverige (2002), which became a bestseller. The book, which is very detailed, was published without consulting the victims first. The book not only deals with Ausonius and his life story, but also with Sweden in general, making the case that his actions were in part explained by a surge of racism in the country in the early 1990s, including the success of the Ny Demokrati right-wing party in the election. In 2005, the book was adapted into a play, and the same year SVT produced a three-part TV miniseries, which premiered on November 2 ...
