ARTICLES RELATED TO Olga Rudge | | | | Olga Rudge: Encyclopedia II - Olga Rudge - CareerRudge had her first contact with the poet Ezra Pound in 1920 while he was a music critic. He reviewed the concert Rudge gave at the Aeolian Hall in November 1920, admiring the "delicate firmness of her fiddling", but he criticised the "piano whack" of her accompanist Renata Borgatti.[3] Rudge does not seem to have taken much notice of Pound's review as she continued her association with Borgatti and pursuing her interest in modern Italian music, giving concerts with Borgatti and Pizzetti at the Sala Bach in Rome in 1921, and joining Renata Borgat ...

 | | | Olga Rudge: Encyclopedia II - Ezra Pound - The London RevolutionPound's early poetry was inspired by his reading of the pre-Raphaelites and other 19th century poets and medieval Romance literature, as well as much neo-Romantic and occult/mystical philosophy. When he moved to London, under the influence of Ford Madox Ford and T. E. Hulme , he began to cast off overtly archaic poetic language and forms in an attempt to remake himself as a poet. He believed W. B. Yeats was the greatest living poet, and befriended him in England, eventually being employed as the Irish poet's secretary. He was also interested ...

 | | | Olga Rudge: Encyclopedia II - Ezra Pound - ImportanceBecause of his political views, especially his support of Mussolini and his anti-Semitism, Pound continues to attract much criticism. While many have asserted that it is impossible to ignore the vital role he played in the modernist revolution in 20th century literature in English, Pound's perceived importance has varied over the years. The location of Pound -- as opposed to other writers such as T.S. Eliot -- at the center of the Anglo-American Modernist tradition was most famously asserted in scholarly circles by the critic Hugh Kenner, mo ...

 | | | Olga Rudge: Encyclopedia II - Ezra Pound - ItalyIn the mid 1920s Pound moved to Rapallo, Italy, where he continued to be a creative catalyst. The young sculptor Heinz Henghes came to see Pound, arriving penniless. He was given lodging and marble to carve, and quickly learned to work in stone. The poet James Laughlin was also inspired at this time to start the publishing company New Directions which would become a vehicle for many new authors.
At this time Pound also organised an annual series of concerts in Rapallo where a wide range of classical and contemporary music was performed. In particular this musical activity contributed to the 20th century revival of interest in Vivaldi, who ...

 | | | Olga Rudge: Encyclopedia II - Olga Rudge - Alone in VeniceFollowing Pound's death Rudge, aged 78, began the final phase of her life. She became one of Venice's resident celebrities, quick witted, intelligent, and cultured. She sat on many committees organizing the city's many charities and galas. She was an essential guest at the city's profuse "dolce vita" gatherings, but continued to inhabit the same small house she had shared with Pound. Encouraging young aspiring poets and artists, she often offered them free use of the top floor of her home in return for a small painting or dedicated poem. Fre ...

 | | | Olga Rudge: Encyclopedia II - Olga Rudge - Venice and PoundIn 1958, Pound was declared incurably insane and permanently incapable of standing trial. He was stripped of his rights of citizenship and released from St. Elizabeth's on condition that he return to Europe. With his wife, who was also his legal custodian, he quickly returned to Italy. The couple stayed with Rudge's and Pound's daughter Mary, now married to Boris de Rachewiltz and living at Brunnenberg castle in Tirolo. Pound's health was now broken and he spent a year in a sanitorium in Martinsbrunn. It is thought that during his time in St ...

 | | | Olga Rudge: Encyclopedia II - Olga Rudge - War yearsThe war years were difficult for the couple. After the United States entered the war, Pound and his wife Mary became enemy aliens in Italy, an ironic situation in light of Pound's support of Mussolini. Their home in Rapallo was sequestered in 1943 and the couple had little choice but to move in with Rudge. Thus the ménage à trois for so long a matter of public speculation became a reality. Rudge sent her daughter back to Gais to live with her original peasant guardians, and was forced by necessity to support the Pounds and her daughter by ...
