| ARTICLES RELATED TO Ocean | | | | Ocean: Encyclopedia II - Biosphere - Origin of termThe term "biosphere" was coined by geologist Eduard Suess in 1875. The concept thus has a geological origin and is an indication of the impact of Darwin on the earth sciences. The biosphere's ecological context comes from the 1920s (see Vladimir I. Vernadsky), preceding the 1935 introduction of the term "ecosystem" by Sir Arthur Tansley (see ecology history). Vernadsky defined ecology as the science of the biosphere.
The biosphere is an important concept in astronomy, geophysics, meteorology, biogeography, evolution, geology, geochemistry, hydrology and, generally speaking, all life and earth sciences. They were armed with a land grant issued by the Philadelphia Land Company, one of the principal investors of which was Benjamin Franklin. A township gradually grew on the site wit ...

| | | | Ocean: Encyclopedia II - Smash TV - DescriptionThe game format was very similar to that of Jarvis's earlier Robotron: 2084, with dual-joystick controls and series of single screen areas. The theme of the game involved players competing in a violent gameshow (set in the then-future of 1999), probably inspired by the 1987 movie, The Running Man.
The game featured verbal interjections from the gameshow host including "I'd buy that for a dollar!" (a RoboCop reference), "Big Money! Big Prizes!", and "Total Carnage! I love it!".
The last quote gave itself to the title of the 1991 follow-up, Total Carnage, which, while not a d ...

| | | | Ocean: Encyclopedia II - MIT OpenCourseWare - ImplicationsBy making their educational materials openly available, MIT is demonstrating that they can give away such materials without threatening the value of an MIT education, or in other words, that there may be something in the educational process that cannot be captured in a book.
It is possible to look at this initiative as a shot across the bow of those who are trying to turn curricula into a commodity. Consolidation in the publishing industry has led to the formation of huge corporations that sell books and teaching materials to schools. ...

| | | | | Ocean: Encyclopedia II - Atlantic passenger train - AtlanticIn 1978, VIA Rail was created out of a Canadian National Railway subsidiary to become Canada's national passenger rail service. In October of that year, VIA negotiated the take-over of CPR passenger service, although routes, equipment and schedules did not change until the summer of 1979. Thus for the first few months after VIA was created, the company included The Atlantic Limited in its timetable and the service continued to operate using the same CPR equipment and crews. In the summer of 1979 this was changed with the name The Atlantic Limited shortened to th ...

| | | | Ocean: Encyclopedia II - The Hunting of the Snark - InterpretationsVarious theories have tried to elucidate the text or parts thereof.
The Hunting of the Snark - Lewis Carroll is the Baker.
This is by far the most serious of them all. The text has a number of hints at this fact. The fact that his name is unknown to the other crew members (he forgets it) attests that some riddle is involved. The baker's character as described in Fit the First matches other descriptions of Carroll of himself (e.g. the White Knight in Through the Looking-Glass). Lewis Carrol wa ...
