Nontrinitarianism: Encyclopedia II - Nontrinitarianism - Origins and basis for Nontrinitarianism

Nontrinitarians claim the roots of their position go back farther than those of their counterpart trinitarians. Some ancient sects, such as the Ebionites, said that Jesus was not a Son of God but rather an ordinary man who was a prophet, a view of Jesus shared by Islam. The biblical basis for each side of the issue is debated chiefly on the question of the divinity of Jesus. Nontrinitarians note that in deference to God, Jesus rejected even being called "good", that he disavowed omniscience as the Son, and that he referred to ascending unto ...

Nontrinitarianism: Encyclopedia II - Iglesia ni Cristo - Criticism

Iglesia ni Cristo - From religious groups. The Iglesia ni Cristo has come under criticism from other religions mainly due to disagreements over their doctrines and beliefs regarding the interpretation of the Bible. Karl Keating, the founder of Catholic Answers, an apologetics group, claims that Jose Ventilacion, an INC minister and one of their chief debaters, broke an agreement for a one-on-one debate made by the two organizations during a debate held in 1990 in National City, California. Instead of a one ...

Nontrinitarianism: Encyclopedia II - Iglesia ni Cristo - Background information

The historical context of the Iglesia ni Cristo lies in a period of the early 20th century characterised by a variety of rural anti-colonialism movements, often with religious undertones, in the Philippines. At this time, U.S. missionary work was exposing Filipino culture to many alternatives to the Catholicism installed under earlier Spanish rule. Felix Manalo was deeply religious as a child and joined many religious organizations as a young adult, leaving each after finding teachings which he felt contradicted those in the Bible. He proclaimed that God gave him a mission to preach the ...

Nontrinitarianism: Encyclopedia II - Iglesia ni Cristo - Politics

Ever since former Philippine president Manuel L. Quezon created a lasting friendship after asking Felix Manalo for advice, the INC has been known for its strong political influence. It was well-known for its support of President Ferdinand E. Marcos until his ousting during the EDSA Revolution of 1986. Macapagal-Arroyo's father, Diosdado Macapagal, due to his religious and political views, refused INC's preferred support during his runs for Vice President in 1957, and re-election for President in 1965 ...

Nontrinitarianism: Encyclopedia II - Michael Servetus - Early life and education

Michael Servetus was born in Villanueva de Sijena, Huesca, Spain in 1511 (some sources give an earlier date based on Servetus' own claim of 1509). His paternal ancestors came from the hamlet of Serveto, in the Aragonian Pyrenees, which gave the family their surname. The maternal line descended from convert Jews from the Monzón area. At the age of 13, in 1524, his father Antonio Servet (alias Revés, i.e. "Reverse"), who was a notary at the royal monastery of Sijena nearby, sent young Michael to college, probably at the Univers ...

Nontrinitarianism: Encyclopedia II - Trinity - Ontology of the Trinity

Trinity - Historical view and usage. The Trinitarian view has been affirmed as an article of faith by the Nicene (325/381) and Athanasian creeds (circa 500), which attempted to standardize belief in the face of disagreements on the subject. These creeds were formulated and ratified by the Church of the third and fourth centuries in reaction to heterodox theologies, usually involving the nature of the Trinity and/or Christ's position in it. The Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed (381 version) is still affirmed by Ort ...

Nontrinitarianism: Encyclopedia II - Christian theological controversy - Background

One difficulty is to find the meaning of the original languages in which the scriptures were written. In order to obtain a full understanding of the original writing, it is necessary either to learn these original languages, or to rely on translations. However, translational difficulties occasionally arise, in part due to the non-literal meanings of some words in the original text and the difficulty in transliterating them into a different cultural setting. Another difficulty is determining the context in which the original words were ...

Nontrinitarianism: Encyclopedia II - Michael Servetus - Modern relevance

Due to his rejection of the Trinity and eventual execution by burning for heresy, Servetus is often regarded as the first Unitarian martyr. Since the Unitarians and Universalists have joined, and changed their focus, his ideas are no longer very relevant to modern Unitarian Universalism. A few scholars insist he had more in common with Sabellianism or Arianism or that he even had a theology unique to himself. Nevertheless Unitarian Universalist churches and ...

After his studies in medicine he started a medical practice. He became personal physician to Archbishop Palmier of Vienne, and was also physician to Guy de Maugiron, the lieutenant governor of Dauphiné. While he practiced medicine near Lyon for about fifteen years, he also published two other works dealing with Ptolemy's Geography. Servetus dedicated his first edition of Ptolemy and his edition of the Bible to his patron Hugues de la Porte, and dedicated his second edition of Ptolemy's Geography to his other patron, Archbishop Palmier. Nontrinitarianism: Encyclopedia II - Trinity - Scripture and tradition

The word Trinity comes from the Latin noun Trinitas, meaning the state or condition of being three, or a group of three persons or things. The first recorded application of this Latin word to Father, Son and Holy Spirit was by Tertullian in about 200. The Greek term with the same meaning, Τρίας, has given the English word triad. The Sanskrit word, Trimurti, has a similar meaning. The earliest Christians were noted for their insistence on the oneness of God, in contrast to the polytheism of the p ...

Nontrinitarianism: Encyclopedia II - Trinity - Similarities in the 16th-century Jewish Kabbalah

In the late Kabbalistic tradition, originating in the city of Safed in the 16th century, an essential part of representations of the Tree of life or Etz Hayim is a set of three vertical lines of light, each line being headed by Sefirot, or degrees of altruistic quality at the top. These three Sefirot form a spiritual or heavenly triangle, which rules the whole earthly part of the Tree of Life. It is obvious that Sefirot of Kether (Crown), Chochmah (Wisdom) and Binah (Understanding), i.e. Ancient One, Father and Mother, or even Chochmah, Bina ...
