Sly & the Family Stone - Pre-history.
The Stewart family was a deeply religious middle-class family from Dallas, Texas. K.C. and Alpha Stewart held the family together under the doctrines of the Church of God in Christ, and encouraged their musical expression. After the family moved to Vallejo, California (near Oakland and San Francisco), the youngest four Stewart children (Sylvester, Freddie, Rose, and Vaetta) formed "The Stewart Four", who released their own local 78 RPM single, "On the Battlefield of the Lord" b/w "Walking in Jesus' Name", in 1952. Eldest sister Loretta was ...

| | | | No Doubt: Encyclopedia II - Ric Ocasek - Solo music careerThe visually distinctive, very slender singer released his first solo album in 1982. Beatitude is a somewhat more experimental variation of The Cars' New Wave rock sound. A more synthesizer-heavy follow up, This Side Of Paradise, was released in 1986. A minor hit, "Emotion In Motion" accompanied the album.
After the Cars split in 1987, and Ocasek disappeared from the public eye for several years, resurfacing in 1990 with Fireball Zone. One track, "Rockaway", enjoyed a brief stay on the charts, but his solo albums ...

| | | | No Doubt: Encyclopedia II - Reel Big Fish - Band historyTheir debut album, Everything Sucks, was an underground hit and led to a deal with Mojo Records, an indie label. Turn the Radio Off established the band in the underground music scene, and they began touring throughout the US. After the single "Sell Out" began breaking into the mainstream, including MTV, the album made an appearance on the charts. The ska revival was short-lived, however, and Why Do They Rock So Hard? Super Bowl XXXVII - Gruden helps rebuild the Raiders.
After moving back to Oakland, California in 1995, the Raiders suffered sub-par seasons, including a 4-12 record in 1997. Team owner Al Davis then hired Gruden to inject life into the Raiders. Under Gruden's leadership, the Raiders improved to 8-8 in both 1998 and 1999. The team was further boosted in 1999 with the signing of veteran quarterback Rich Gannon. With Gannon under the helm, the te ...

| | | | No Doubt: Encyclopedia II - We Belong Together - Video and performancesThe video was directed by Brett Ratner, who also directed some of Carey's other videos including the previous "It's Like That". Initially, Carey had wanted Paul Hunter to direct, but he was apparently busy. Carey, a close friend of Ratner, was reluctant at first, as he focused on directing films, but after hearing a proposed treatment, the deal was approved. The video serves as the sequel and conclusion to the video for "It's Like That" (the two music videos were filmed simultaneously). In "It's Like That", Carey's character was seen at a party the night before her wedding, when a guest revealed himself as ...

| | | | No Doubt: Encyclopedia II - What's Going On song - About the songDesigned with a somber jazz-inspired tone, "What's Going On" addressed the political and social troubles of the world in a soulful, introspective way, contrasting to the more dramatic socially conscious records made by Sly & the Family Stone and The Temptations over the previous three years. The song originated from an idea by Four Tops member Renaldo "Obie" Benson, who, witnessing stressful conditions while on tour in Europe, began writing a song to express his feelings. Once back in the United States, Benson and Motown songwriter Al Cl ...

| | | | No Doubt: Encyclopedia II - What You Waiting For? - Writing process"What You Waiting For?" was co-written by Stefani and Linda Perry, and produced by Nellee Hooper. The lyrics describe how Stefani has conflicting feelings in the form of an inner dialogue with herself, with the more confident Stefani (who sings in a tough, strident tone) giving the nervous one (squeakier and higher) some tough love: "Take a chance 'cuz you might grow/ take a chance, you stupid ho". The nervous Stefani sings in the first person, while the confident one responds in the second person: "Naturally, I'm worried if I do it alone..." while the other responds, "Who really cares, ...

| | | | | No Doubt: Encyclopedia II - Talking Heads - HistoryTalking Heads married punk rock sensibilities with poppy sounds, clipped funk, art school intellectualism, and later, world music. In David Byrne, they had one of the most distinctive front men of the period; they remained popular during their lifetime, and their concert film Stop Making Sense (which was made at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood, and directed by Jonathan Demme) is widely acclaimed as one ...

| | | | | | No Doubt: Encyclopedia II - The Big Break - How the show is doneTen players compete in one season of The Big Break. Those ten players are found through a nationwide talent search, in which producers look for players with low handicaps, good swings, and good camera presence. Some players are professionals on mini-tours, or commoners who aspire to play golf professionally.
When those ten golfers are found, they are then sent to a hotel to meet each other for the first time, although some show contestants probably already knew each through playing in past tournaments. After spending time getti ...

| | | | No Doubt: Encyclopedia II - No Doubt album - BackgroundBy mid-1991, No Doubt had been together as a touring band for about three and a half years. During that time their line-up had changed considerably, with co-founder John Spence having committed suicide two years earlier. Despite this, the band had managed to build a strong reputation in Orange County, California, and signed a record contract with Interscope Records.
The band members (Tom Dumont, Tony Kanal, Eric Stefani, Gwen Stefani and Adrian Young) spent less than $13,000 in the process of recording their debut album, featuring bot ...

| | | | No Doubt: Encyclopedia II - N.E.R.D - In Search Of...Williams and Hugo originally recorded an album for European release in 2001 using the same digital production techniques used on Neptunes productions. | | | | No Doubt: Encyclopedia II - Institute band - BiographyInstitute was formed in 2004 in the wake of a hiatus of lead singer Gavin Rossdale's other band, Bush. Rossdale formed Institute with Chris Traynor, who played guitar on Bush's last tour and is also a member of Helmet, after Bush agreed upon taking a break after their last album, Golden State. The two later enlisted the help of bassist Cache Tolman (of Rival Schools fame) and drummer Josh Freese. Freese was only enlisted temporarily, as the band needed a drummer for the recording of their first album, Distort Yourself. Rossdale later ...
