Nile: Encyclopedia II - Nile - Flooding of the Nile

The annual cycles of the Nile were very important to the lives of ancient Egyptians. The Nile 'mysteriously' but predictably rose each summer to flood and fertilize the land, without rain and in the hottest time of the year. A good flood and Egypt's wealth was assured; a poor flood or too great of a flood and Egypt would suffer. The cyclic mystery created awe and stimulated worship, and the job of recording the history of Nile flooding, when the Nile was expected to flood, and the locations of farmers' plots after the floodwaters rece ...

Nile: Encyclopedia II - Nile - History of the Nile
The Nile (iteru in Ancient Egyptian) was the lifeline of the ancient Egyptian civilization, with most of the population and all of the cities of Egypt resting along those parts of the Nile valley lying north of Aswan. The Nile has been the lifeline for Egyptian culture since the Stone Age. Climate change - or perhaps overgrazing - about 8000 BC desiccated the pastoral lands of Egypt to form the Sahara, and the tribes naturally migrated to the river, where they developed a settled agricu ...

Nile: Encyclopedia II - Nile - Branches

There are two great branches of the Nile: the White Nile, from equatorial East Africa, and the Blue Nile, from Ethiopia. Both branches formed on the western flanks of the East African Rift, which is the southern African part of the Great Rift Valley. Nile - White Nile. Lake Victoria, which lies between Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, is considered to be the source of the Nile, although the lake itself has feeder rivers of considerable size from the other Great Lakes of Africa. In particular, the farthest heads ...

Nile: Encyclopedia - Blue Nile

This is about the river. For the band, see The Blue Nile. The Blue Nile is a river originating at Lake Tana in Ethiopia. Although there are several feeder streams that flow into Lake Tana the sacred source of the river is generally considered to be a small spring at Gishe Abbai at an altitude of approximately 1,800 m (5,940 ft). It joins the White Nile at Khartoum, Sudan and, as the Nile, flows through Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea at Alexandria. The Blue Nile is so-called because its water is visibly purer for m ...

The village of Niles was incorporated on August 24, 1899. The village had a population of 500 people at that time. There is no clear indication of the origin of the name "Niles". Nile: Encyclopedia - Chari-Nile languages

Chari-Nile is a now obsolete name for a subset of the language family now called Nilo-Saharan. The name was introduced by Joseph Greenberg in his 1955 Studies in African linguistic classification. It derives from the fact that the languages in this subfamily were spoken in the watersheds of the Chari (main tributary of Lake Chad) and Nile rivers, or in the area between them. It was believed to unite four subfamilies: Central Sudanic languages Kunama language Berta language Eastern Sudanic

Nile: Encyclopedia II - Niles Ohio - History

Niles was founded in 1806 by James Heaton, who owned one of the first iron-ore processing plants in the state. The town originally went by the name 'Heaton's Furnace', but was rather quickly renamed Nilestown, after Hezekiah Niles (editor of the Niles Register, a Baltimore newspaper.) In 1843, the name was shortened to simply 'Niles'. William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States, was born in Niles on January 29, 1843. The McKinley Memorial was built in downtown Niles to remember William McKinley in 1915, and houses the town's library as well as a small museum. Kenneth Patchen, the poet, w ...

Nile: Encyclopedia - Hathor

In Egyptian mythology, Hathor (Egyptian for house of Horus) was originally a personification of the Milky Way, which was seen as the milk that flowed from the udders of a heavenly cow. Hathor was an ancient goddess, worshipped as a cow-deity from at least 2700 BC, during the 2nd dynasty, and possibly even by the Scorpion King. The name Hathor refers to the encirclement by her, in the form of the Milky Way, of the night sky and consequently of the god of the sky, Horus. She was originally seen a ...

Nile: Encyclopedia II - Geography of Egypt - Nile Valley and Delta

The Nile Valley and Delta, the most extensive oasis on earth, was created by the world's second-longest river and its seemingly inexhaustible sources. Without the topographic channel that permits the Nile to flow across the Sahara, Egypt would be entirely desert; the Nile River traverses about 1,600 kilometers through Egypt and flows northward from the Egyptian-Sudanese border to the Mediterranean Sea. The Nile is a combination of three long rivers whose sources are in cen ...
