New Age Spirituality Glossary: New Age Spirituality Dictionary on Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi)

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi)

(1869-1948)

Best known by his title, Mahatma (Skt. , "great soul"), social reformer and leader of India's nationalist movement. Gandhi advocated a chaste, modern Hinduism that rejected priests, caste, and deities and focused on Truth (Skt. satya) as God. Gandhi's idea of self-sacrifice and asceticism (tapasya) was based on the Bhagavad Gita. With nonviolence (ahimsa) as his ideal, Gandhi developed the technique of satyagraha as a virtuous form of conflict resolution and political engagement.

New Age Spirituality Glossary: Meaning and Definition of Karma

Karma has quite a karma. Long after India's seers immortalized it in the Vedas, it suffered bad press under European missionaries who belittled it as "fate" and "fatalism," and today finds itself again in the ascendancy as the subtle and all-encompassing principle which governs man's experiential universe in a way likened to gravity's governance over the physical plane. Like gravity, karma was always there in its fullest potency, even when people did not comprehend it.

New Age Spirituality Glossary: Music Of Masti And Meditation

Over the last century, it is in the realm of art that a contrarian movement developed - towards spirituality, a movement that has been sought to be described by one word: 'Abstract'.

One of the first to define the abstract was W Kandinsky, who explained it as non-materialism in art, the exploration of the spiritual entity of things, when art, stripped of its theatricality, and its "bait of entertainment" reached a pure core. The dictionary splits the word abstract into the Latin 'abs', meaning 'away from', and 'tractum', meaning 'to draw'. Clearly, it means to draw away from the external to the internal entity of things.

New Age Spirituality Glossary: Sacred waters around the World.

Since prehistoric times sacred places have exerted a mysterious attraction on billions of people around the world. Ancient legends and modern day reports tell of extraordinary things that have happened to people while visiting these places. Different sacred sites have the power to heal the body, enlighten the mind, increase creativity, develop psychic abilities, and awaken the soul to a knowing of its true purpose in life.

Normally, when one thinks of such places, the mind imagines terrestrial locations, fixed and unmoving, such as mountains, lands and caves. But the planet is a water place too with more than 70% of the surface of the earth covered with water. Many sacred sites are connected to water.

New Age Spirituality Glossary: New Age Spirituality Dictionary on Nature Spirits

Nature Spirits

Various types of beings that are said to be the "soul" of natural forms. Belief in the existence of nature spirits is common to all cultures throughout history.

They are usually attached to a specific place, such as a tree, river, plant or mountain. They come in a variety of shapes and temperaments. Some are described as human in form, others are like animals or are half-human, half animal; some are helpful, others deceitful or malevolent. They are normally invisible to humans, except to those with the gift of clairvoyance.

Elementals are a sub-class of nature spirits that are a part of the life force of all things in nature. They are ruled by archangels and are generally regarded as benevolent. The Neoplatonic Greeks categorized elementals according to the four elements:

  • Earth elementals are gnomes;
  • air elementals are sylphs;
  • Water elementals are undines; and
  • Fire elementals are salamanders.

In the Middle Ages interest in these main groups was revived and alchemists and magicians sought to control and manipulate the forces of nature and the universe. Other elementals include elves, who live in the woods, and household spirits such as brownies, goblins and bogies. Fairies are also sometimes included in this category.

New Age Spirituality Glossary: New Age Spirituality Dictionary on Judaism

Judaism

World religion founded approximately 1500 BC by the prophet Moses (Thothmoses - prince and high-priest of Egypt)

The foundation of Judaism is the Torah (Genesis through Deuteronomy), which is said to have been written by Moses. The Israelites returned to the promised land of Canaan and became a small but powerful nation there under the rule of King David and his son Solomon.

After Solomon's death the kingdom split into a northern kingdom called Israel and a southern kingdom called Judah (the name of David's tribe). The northern kingdom was conquered and decimated by the Assyrians in 722 BC, after which the term Judeans, or Jews, gradually came into use to refer to all Israelites.

The Jews suffered conquests by a succession of foreign powers - the Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, and finally the Romans in the first century BC. Throughout this period the Jews developed a strong sense of national identity, identification with the Promised Land, and anticipation of a coming Messiah (ÒAnointed PrinceÓ).

There are three main branches of modern Judaism: Orthodox (traditional, literal adherence to the Torah as interpreted by the Talmud), Conservative (a middle position advocating traditional beliefs and practices up to a point), and Reform (liberal, non-literal stance on the Torah and Talmud; often non-religious or secular with emphasis on Jewish culture).

New Age Spirituality Glossary: Intelligence and Happiness

Intelligence does not in and of itself bring happiness. What brings happiness is acceptance. There is no purpose to intelligence, it is inherent within the energy of all that is. Intelligence and energy are one and the same. Energy is intelligence. Intelligence is energy.

Happiness is a result of acceptance. Those who operate with greater mental constraints, for whatever reason, sometimes seem to have an easier time accepting their circumstances, their environment, and themselves, because they are not given to long- winded inner dialoguing and mental journeys into the various nuances of their perceived reality. And so a socalled simple minded person can shrug their shoulders and carry on, accept what is, and that is what creates the avenue for the experience of happiness.

New Age Spirituality Glossary: New Age Spirituality Dictionary on Hammurabi

Hammurabi

(ca. 1792 to 1750 BC) King of Babylon The sixth of his family to rule in the area of Babylon, under whom Babylon become a major power. His most famous achievement was his socalled law code, a misnomer because Mesopotamian law was never codified. The laws, engraved on a stone stele, are a collection of customary law, difficult cases, clarifications and refinements of existing law, and some theoretical expansions covering a range of public and private issues.

Their importance for judicial practice is dubious. In forming such a collection, the work of chancery scribes, Hammurabi was following a tradition of half a millennium. A prologue and epilogue, in contrast to the laws themselves, are written in a solemn, highly stylized language. They frame the laws and give them their religious context. The latter is reaffirmed by the representation on the stele of a god, probably Marduk, giving Hammurabi symbols of his authority as legislator and judge.

The prologue itself tells of the choice of Hammurabi by the gods "to make equity appear in the land. " The laws engraved on the stone stele comprise a majestic document, and it was copied for over a thousand years, even outside Babylonia.

New Age Spirituality Glossary: Why Wicca is Not Celtic Paganism

Why Wicca is Not Celtic Paganism

There are many out there who believe that Wicca and its related forms of NeoPagism are a type of Celtic Paganism (and vice versa),  but this is simply not true. The following article is meant to be a comparison of Wicca and Celtic Paganism in order to demonstrate this, and to educate the public about Celtic Paganism. While Wicca certainly contains elements of Celtic mythology, folk magic and religious belief, its basic tenets and beliefs are radically different from those of Celtic Pagans.

New Age Spirituality Glossary: New Age Dictionary on Age of Aquarius

Age of Aquarius - N

Astrologers believe that evolution goes through cycles corresponding to the signs of the zodiac, each lasting from 2,000 to 2,400 years. New Age advocates say we are now moving from the cycle associated with Pisces into the one associated with Aquarius. The Acquarian Age will supposedly be characterized by a heightened degree of spiritual or cosmic consciousness.

New Age Spirituality Glossary: New Age Spirituality Dictionary on Michel Nostrodamus

Michel Nostrodamus

(1503- 1566) French physician and astrologer whose predictions of the future have fascinated people for centuries. Nostradamus acquired fame as a doctor by treating victims of the plague, but he eventually turned more to astrology and metaphysics.

In 1555 he completed the Centuries, a book of more than 900 predictions about the fate of France, the world, and celebrated persons of his time. The title of the book refers to the fact that the contents are arranged in sections of 100 verses each. An expanded version was published in 1558.

His prophecies are written as four-lined rhymed verses (quatrains) in vague, often cryptic language. The fact that they are written in a French dialect that has not been spoken for 400 years complicates interpretation of his predictions.

Some interpreters say the verses can be applied to anything, or nothing, whereas others claim that various verses foretold the Great Fire of London in 1666, the deaths of several monarchs, details of the French Revolution, the rise of Napoleon and Hitler and World War II.

Because Nostradamus included very few dates in his prophecies and because, additionally, he did not organize them into a chronological order, the verses have been constantly reinterpreted since their publication.

The Centuries remains a classic of the occult literature and hundreds of studies of it have been published.

New Age Spirituality Glossary: New Age Spirituality Dictionary on Aboriginal Dreaming

Aboriginal Dreaming

An English expression adopted by Australian Aborigines to convey ideas that, though related in their thought, are not usually denoted by a single word in any of their languages.

One sense is that of a primordial epoch, the Dreaming or Dreamtime, when beings with remarkable powers arose from the ground, descended from the sky, or appeared from over the horizon. They gave the earth its shape by creating physical features (often from parts of their own bodies), fixed life in species form, established human culture, and gave everything its name.

These creative beings, who in their totality are the ultimate explanation of all things, are themselves called Dreamings (roughly equivalent to the anthropological term totems).

Their significance to the Aborigines is not merely historical but personal and social, for each individual and group gains a distinctive identity through its association with one or more Dreamings. In many regions it is held that such beings reincarnate themselves as humans, or that they left relics behind that, to this day, are sufficiently potent to impregnate women.

This sense of oneness, in which past and present, spirit being and human being, are somehow fused, is also seen in ceremonies in which the actors wear designs and make movements symbolic or mimetic of what the Dreamings did in the Dreamtime. By extension, from these two senses of Dreaming, the Aborigines form other expressions, such as Dreaming-place (a site at which a Dreaming was active and left something of itself) and Dreaming-track (an imagined path along which a Dreaming traveled from place to place in the primordial epoch).

Contrary to what is sometimes suggested, the term has no necessary connection with the verb to dream, even though present-day revelations to humans by Dreamings normally occur while the recipient is in a dream or trance state.

See Astral World.

New Age Spirituality Glossary: The Allure of Tantra

The Allure of Tantra

Perhaps nothing is more exotic, dramatic and sensational in IndiaÕs Yoga traditions than is the practice of Tantra. No other approach to Yoga has gained such a fascination for the modern mind and its seeking of the bizarre, the entertaining and the enigmatic.

Tantra appears to offer both spiritual and worldly success to a superlative degree. It covers not only internal yogic experiences of chakras, lokas and deities, but also has many important healing practices for body and mind. Most notably, it offers special means of heightening sexual pleasure, making money, gaining recognition and defeating oneÕs enemies - with Tantric methods available for achieving all human desires. There is in Tantra something for everyone, especially those who may be put off by ascetic or renunciate approaches to the spiritual life such as seem to dominate most of the rest of the Yoga tradition.
