Society of Friends

A religious body having no definite creed and no regular ministry, founded by George Fox (1624-91), who began his preaching in 1647. His followers created an organized society during the 1650s and 1660s.

It appears from the founders Journal that they first obtained the appellation (1650) from the following circumstances: 'Justice Bennet, of Derby,' says Fox, 'was the first to call us Quakers, because I bid them Tremble at the Word of the Lord'. Familiarly known as Quakers.

Hearth

Literally the floor of the fireplace. In ancient (and fairly recent) times, the hearth, was the "heart" of the home and the family. In fact, it was so much at the hub of living that its second definition has become "home and family. " The hearth was the place where the family gathered to ward off winter's chill, cook the food that sustained life, prepare the poultices and herbal tinctures for healing, and tell stories and songs long into the night.

Tree of Life

(1)  The Tree of Life is the central feature of Kabbalah. According to the teachings, the Tree of Life was put into place before Creation. Everything in Creation is patterned after the Tree of Life. The ten spiritual centers or Sefirot in the Tree of Life represent the ten Divine attributes of God within man. It is, by definition, humanity's process of returning to divinity along the same path.

(2)  One of two trees placed in the Garden of Eden by God. The other tree is the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. These two trees presented the two elements that form mortal existence - Reincarnation (lives) and karma (the experience of desire and aversion).
