Necromancy (Latin necromantia, Greek νεκρομαντία nekromantía) is the alleged divination by which a person raises the spirits of the dead or, in some cases, merely their corpses. The word derives from the Greek νεκρός nekrós "dead" and μαντεία manteía "divination". It has a subsidiary meaning reflected in an alternative and archaic form of the word, nigromancy, (a folk etymology using Latin niger, "black") in which the magical force of "dark powers" is gained from or by acti ...

Necromancy may or may not have a relation to shamanism, which calls upon spirits (angles of the elements and such)or 'The Great Spirit/Creator' (God) to heal or help ghosts reach the afterlife. The historian Strabo (Strabo, xvi. 2, 39, νεκρομαντία) refers to necromancy as the principal form of divination amongst the people of Persia; and it is believed to also have been widespread amongst the peoples of Chaldea (particularly amongst the Sabians or star-worshippers), Etruria and Babylonia. The Babylonian necromancers themselves were called Manzazuu or Sha'etemmu an ...

Black magic is seen as the branch of magic used to perform evil acts or draw on malevolent powers. Black magic is believed to be invoked to kill, injure, cause destruction, or for personal gain. Necromancy: Encyclopedia - Witch of Endor

In the Hebrew Bible, the Witch of Endor of the First book of Samuel, chapter 28:4–25, was a witch, a woman "who possesses a talisman", through which she called up the ghost of the recently deceased prophet Samuel, at the demand of King Saul of Israel. After Samuel's death and burial with due mourning ceremonies in Ramah, Saul had driven all necromancers and magicians from Israel. Then, in a bitter irony, Saul sought out the witch, anonymously and in disguise, only after he received no answer from God from dreams, prophets or the Uri ...

Necromancy: Encyclopedia - Key of Solomon

The Key of Solomon is a grimoire or book on magic attributed to King Solomon (as several others were). The copies we know are from the Middle Age and posterior, but undoubtedly the book contains several paragraphs and terms inspired by Talmudic texts and Jewish Kabbalah. It is of particular interest in the field of demonology. It is possible that the Key of Solomon inspired posterior works like the Lemegeton, also called The Lesser Key of Solomon, but there are many differences between both books. The only thing that mig ...

Necromancy: Encyclopedia - Conjuration

The word conjuration (from Latin 'conjuratio', 'conjurare', to swear together) can be interpreted in several different ways: as an invocation or evocation (the latter in the sense of binding by a vow); as an exorcism; or as an act of illusionism. The word is often used synonymously with "invocation", although the two are not synonyms. One who performs conjurations is called a conjurer or conjuror. As an invocation, a conjuration is the act of summoning one or more spirits with a pre-determined purpose by means of a charm. This typically means that the conjurer ...

Necromancy: New Age Spirituality Dictionary on Necromancy

Necromancy: (from Greek words meaning 'dead' and 'divination'),

A form of divination by communication with the dead, one of the "black arts".

The classic case of necromancy is the witch of Endor, described in the Bible (1 Samuel 28), who summoned the spirit of Samuel in the presence of Saul.

Necromancy can be divided into two main branches: divination by means of ghosts, and divination from corpses, both of which represent related forms of forbidden knowledge.

The second method led to the disinterment of corpses and rifling of graves for the grisly charms which magicians and witches considered necessary for the effective performance of the magical arts. To evoke the dead the magician needed to obtain the help of powerful spirits, both for his own protection and to compel the corpse or ghost to submit to his will.

A spell from ancient Greece calls upon the powers of the mighty Kore, Persephone, Ereshkigal, Adonis, Hermes and Thoth, to bind the dead. According to a ritual described by Seneca, the Roman dramatist, the summoning of the dead involved not only a burnt sacrifice but a blood-drenched altar.

Necromancy: Spiritual - Theosophy Dictionary on Necromancy

Necromancy [from Greek nekros corpse + manteia divination]

The art of obtaining information by invoking the image or shade of the departed. The practice is dangerous to the sorcerer and baneful to the astral entity whose fading remnants are thus temporarily revivified and disturbed.

The practice was ancient and widespread among the lower orders of the Greek and Roman peoples, and is expressly condemned by an uninterrupted testimony dating from archaic times, ancient legislators and philosophers condemning it, for it is a perversion of the real communion of the genuine spiritual theurgist with his own inner god.

Modern Spiritualism is an unconscious blundering into necromancy; if the astral remains of the dead are really called up, then the normal processes of their dissolution are interfered with. If they are not called up, then they have been impersonated by still more harmful and dangerous denizens of the lower astral light.
