 | | | Naji al-Ali: Encyclopedia II - Palestinian exodus - HistoryThe history of the Palestinian Exodus is closely tied to the events of the war in Palestine, which lasted from 1947 to 1949. | | | Naji al-Ali: Encyclopedia II - Palestinian exodus - The Nakba and its role in the Palestinian narrativeThe Nakba or Al-Nakba (Arabic: النكبة, pronounced An-Nakba) is a term meaning "cataclysm" or "catastrophe". It is the term with which Palestinians usually refer to the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, or more specifically, the Palestinian exodus.
The term Nakba was coined by Constantin Zureiq, a professor of history at the American University of Beirut, in his 1948 book Ma'na al-Nakba (The Meaning of the Disaster). After the Six Day War in 1967 Zureiq wrote another book ...

 | | | Naji al-Ali: Encyclopedia II - Palestinian exodus - Absentee propertyIn 1950, the Absentee Property Law was passed in Israel. It provided for confiscation of the property and land left behind by departing Palestinians, the so-called "absentees". Even Arabs who never left Israel, and received citizenship after the war, but stayed for a few days in a nearby village had their property confiscated. About 32,000 Palestinians became "present absentees" - persons that were present at the time but considered absent.
How much of Israel's territory consists of land confiscated with the Absentee Property Law is u ...

 | | | Naji al-Ali: Encyclopedia II - Palestinian exodus - Contemporary mediationThe United Nations was involved in the conflict from the very beginning. In the autumn of 1948 the refugee problem was a fact and possible solutions were discussed. Count Folke Bernadotte said on September 16:
No settlement can be just and complete if recognition is not accorded to the right of the Arab refugee to return to the home from which he has been dislodged. It would be an offence against the principles of elemental justice if these innocent victims of the conflict were denied the right to return to their homes while ...

 | | | Naji al-Ali: Encyclopedia II - Palestinian exodus - Did Arab leaders endorse or call for the refugee flight?Israeli official sources have long claimed that the refugee flight was in large part instigated by Arab leaders. For example, Yosef Weitz wrote in October 1948:
The migration of the Arabs from the Land of Israel was not caused by persecution, violence, expulsion [but was] deliberately organised by the Arab leaders in order to arouse Arab feelings of revenge, to artificially create an Arab refugee problem. (Jewish National Fund official Yosef Weitz, 1948)
During the period preceding the 1948 war, and particul ...

 | | | Naji al-Ali: Encyclopedia II - Naji al-Ali - AssassinationAn unknown youth opened fire on Naji al-Ali in London on the 22 July 1987, hitting him in the right temple. He remained unconscious until his death on 29 August 1987. Although his will requested that he be buried in Ain al-Hilweh beside his father, this proved impossible to arrange and he was buried in Brookwood Islamic Cemetery outside London. It is still not known who was responsible for his assassination. British police investigating the killing arrested a Palestinian student in Hull University, Isma'il Hassan Sawan and found a cache of weapons in his apartment, but he ...

 | | | Naji al-Ali: Encyclopedia II - Naji al-Ali - HandalaHandala is the most famous of Naji al-Ali's characters. He is depicted as a ten-year old boy, and appeared for the first time in Al-Siyasa in Kuwait in 1969. The figure turned his back to the viewer from the year 1973, and clasped his hands behind his back. The artist explained that the ten-year old represented his age when forced to leave Palestine and would not grow up until he could return to his homeland; his turned back and clasped hands symbolised the character's rejection of "outside solutions". Handala wears ragged clothes and is barefoot, symbolising his allegiance to the poor. In later cartoons, he sometimes appea ...

 | | | Naji al-Ali: Encyclopedia II - Naji al-Ali - Early LifeNaji al-Ali was born in 1938 in the village of Shajra, located between Tiberias and Nazareth. He went into exile in the south of Lebanon with his family in 1948 during the Nakba and lived in Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp near Sidon, where he attended the Union of Christian Churches school. After gaining his Certificat he worked in the orchards of Sidon, then moved to Tripoli where he attended the White Friars' vocational school for two years.
Naji al-Ali then moved to Beirut, where he lived in a tent in Chatila camp and worked in various industrial jobs. In 1957, after qualifying as a car mechanic, he travelled to Sa ...

 | | | Naji al-Ali: Encyclopedia II - Naji al-Ali - Work positions and awardsIn his career as a political cartoonist, Naji al-Ali produced over 40,000 drawings. They generally deal with the situation of the Palestinian people, depicting suffering and resistance and harshly criticising the Palestinian leadership and the Arab regimes. Naji al-Ali was a fierce opponent of any settlement that would not vindicate the Palestinians' right to all of historic Palestine, and many of his cartoons express this opposition. Unlike many political cartoonists, specific politicians do not appear in person in his work: as he stated, " ...
