Mystical Experience: Encyclopedia II - Religious experience - Mystical experiences

Mystical experiences are in many ways the opposite of numinous experiences. In the mystical experience, all 'otherness' disappear and the believer becomes one with the transcendent. The believer discovers that he or she is not distinct from the cosmos, the deity or the other reality, but one with it. Zaehner has identified two distinctively different mystical experiences: natural and religious mystical experiences (Charlesworth: 1988). Natural mystical experiences are for example experience ...

Mystical Experience: Movement of the Mind

Movement of the Mind

After a short practice of meditation you will feel that the body gets lighter in a short time, say fifteen or thirty minutes after you have taken your seat on Padma, Siddha or Sukha Asana according to your taste and temperament. You may be semiconscious of the body and surroundings or you may become quite unconscious of the body.

Mystical Experience: Dazzling Mystical Lights in Meditation

Dazzling Mystical Lights in Meditation

Sometimes, during meditation, you will get very powerful and dazzling lights, bigger than the sun. They are white in color. In the beginning, they come and disappear quickly. Later on, they are steady and they become fixed for ten to fifteen minutes according to the strength and degree of concentration. For those who concentrate at the Trikuti, the light appears in the forehead; while for others who concentrate at the Sahasra Chakra, the light manifests itself at the top of the head. The light is so powerful and dazzling sometimes that you have to withdraw yourself from looking at it and break the meditation.

Mystical Experience: Separation from the Physical Body

Separation from the Physical Body

During the course of meditation, one day you will feel that you have separated yourself from the body. You will have immense joy mixed with fear; joy in the possession of a new light, astral body; and fear owing to the entry in a foreign, unknown plane. At the very outset, the new consciousness is very rudimentary in the new plane, just as in the case of a pup with newly opened eyes on the eighth or tenth day on the physical plane. You will feel that you have a light air body and perceive a rotating, vibratory, limited, astral atmosphere with illumination of golden lights, objects, beings, etc. You may feel that you are rotating or floating in the air and consequently there is fear of a fall.

Mystical Experience: Visions of Lights in Meditation

Visions of Lights in Meditation

Various kinds of lights manifest during meditation owing to concentration. In the beginning, a bright, white light, the size of a pin's point will appear in the forehead in Trikuti which corresponds tentatively to the Ajna Chakra of the astral body. When the eyes are closed, you will notice different colored lights such as white, yellow, red, smoky, blue, green, mixed color, flashes like lightning, like fire, burning charcoal, fire-flies, the moon, the sun and stars. These lights appear in the mental space, Chidakasha. These are all Tanmatric lights.

Mystical Experience: Tarot and the Conscious and Subconscious Mind

The symbolic images on the Tarot cards activate and speak to a deep intuitive part of ourselves which the logical, conscious mind cannot understand or control. This part of ourselves is known as the subconscious. This subconscious aspect of being represents our inner self, those deep, highly personal feelings and qualities which provide the foundation for our entire being and give us the motivation behind our behavior, thoughts, emotions, etc. This is the realm of instinct, gut reactions, innate knowing, and personal potential. It is the home of our psyche.

Mystical Experience: Encyclopedia - Mysticism

Mysticism, from the Greek μυω (muo, "to conceal"), is the pursuit of achieving communion with or conscious awareness of ultimate reality, the divine, spiritual truth, or God through direct, personal experience (intuition or insight) rather than rational thought; the belief in the existence of realities beyond perceptual or intellectual apprehension that are central to being and directly accessible through personal experience; or the belief that such experience is a genuine and important source of knowledge. In the Hellenistic world, ...

Mystical Experience: Encyclopedia - Christian mysticism

Mysticism is the philosophy and practice of a direct experience of God. Although it needs to be born in mind that 'experience' is a hotly debated term in the discussion on mysticism, and experience understood simply as a psychological state or event may be contested. In the Christian context it is traditionally practiced through pursuit of the three disciplines of prayer (including Christian meditation and contemplation), fasting (including other forms of abstinence and self-denial), and alms-giving, all discussed by Jesus in the Sermon on t ...

Mystical Experience: Encyclopedia - Jakob Böhme

Jakob Böhme (1575–1624) was a Christian mystic born in central Germany, near Görlitz. He grew up as a Lutheran, and worked as a shoemaker in Görlitz. Böhme had mystical experiences throughout his youth, culminating in a vision in 1600 that he claimed to have received through a beam of light. He believed this vision revealed to him the spiritual structure of the world, as well as the relationship between good and evil. For the time being, he chose not to not speak of this experience openly, prefering instead to continue hi ...

Mystical Experience: Encyclopedia - Transpersonal

The term Transpersonal is often used to refer to psychological categories that transcend the normal features of ordinary ego-functioning. That is, stages of psychological growth, or stages of consciousness, that move beyond the rational and precedes the mystical. The term is highly associated with the work of Abraham Maslow and his understanding of "peak experiences", and was first adapted by the human potential movement in the 1960's. Among the psychologial sciences that have studied transpersonal phenomena we find the schools of Tra ...

Mystical Experience: Encyclopedia II - Religious experience - Discussion

Habel's differentiation between mediate and immediate religious experiences is based on the assumption that it is possible to have a direct experience of any given phenomenon. This assumption is in a general epistemological statement about all experiences. In western philosophy it is more or less generally accepted that one can not have a direct experience of reality. This is also true for religious experiences and therefore the imme ...

Mystical Experience: Encyclopedia II - Religious experience - The numinous

The German thinker Rudolf Otto (1869-1937) argues that there is one common factor to all religious experience, independent of the cultural background. He identifies this experience as the 'numinous' in his book The idea of the holy (1923). The numinous can, according the Otto, not be strictly defined since the numinous is that in which all religious experiences are defined. The numinous can only be evoked or awakened in the mind. The numinous is a realm or dimension of reality ...
