Mysteries: Encyclopedia II - Rosary - The Mysteries

The recitation of the Rosary is traditionally dedicated to one of three sets of "Mysteries" to be said in sequence, one per night: the Joyful (sometimes Joyous) Mysteries; the Sorrowful Mysteries; and the Glorious Mysteries. Each of these three sets of Mysteries has within it five different themes to be meditated on, one for each decade of ten Hail Marys. Pope John Paul II, in his apostolic letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae (October 2002), reccomended an additional set called the Luminous Myst ...

Mysteries: Encyclopedia II - Dionysian Mysteries - A Brief History of the early Dionysos Cult

The ecstatic cult of Dionysos was originally thought to have been a late arrival in Greece from Thrace or Asia Minor, due to the popularity of the cult there and the non integration of the Dionysos into the original Olympian Pantheon. But following the identification of the deity's name on Minoan inscriptions this theory has now been abandoned and the cult is accepted as effectively indigenous and predating Greek Civilisation. The absence of an early Olympian Dionysos is today explained in terms of patterns of social exclusion and the margin ...

The narrative is based upon the murder of Mary Cecilia Rogers, a young woman known popularly as "The Beautiful Cigar Girl," who disappeared on October 4, 1838 in New York. Only a few days later the newspapers announced her return. It was said she had eloped with a naval officer. Three years later, on July 25, 1841, again she disappeared. Her body was floating in the Hudson River three days later. The details surrounding the case suggested she was murdered. The death of this beautiful and well-known girl received national attention for weeks. Months later, the inquest still ongoing, her ...

Mysteries: Encyclopedia II - Mysterious Dave Mather - Life on the Prairie

Dave’s life through most of the 1870’s is poorly documented. He seems to have operated as a cattle rustler and outlaw in Arkansas along with Dave Rudabaugh and Milton J. Yarberry. A warrant was issued for the three after a prominent rancher was murdered and his home robbed. They fled to Decatur, Texas in 1873. Sy reported that he and Dave tried to work as buffalo hunters on the Llano Estacado around 1874. The venture did not last long but it is possible that Dave may have met future associates such as Wyatt Earp, Bat Maste ...

The ‘war’ ended with the Santa Fe established in Raton Pass and the Denver and Rio Grande gaining control of the Royal Gorge. In 1879 Dave joined J.J. Webb, Dave Rudabaugh, and several others in the nearby city of Las Vegas, NM. The group were collectively known as the ‘’Dodge City Gang’’ and were led by Hyman G. Neill, aka “Hoodoo Brown”. Mysteries: Encyclopedia II - Mysterious Dave Mather - Early Life

Dave was the son of Ulysses and Lydia Mather (nee Wright) of Connecticut. His father was a sea captain who was descended from the famous Mathers of New England who had included Richard Mather, Increase Mather, and Cotton Mather. Dave seems to have fancied himself a direct descendant of Cotton Mather, but this was in error. All of the 19th century Mathers were descended from Cotton’s uncle, Timothy “Farmer” Mather. Dave was the first of three sons born to the Mathers. His brother, Josiah “Sy” Mather was born October 11, 1854. Another brother, Geo ...

Mysteries: Encyclopedia II - MIT Mystery Hunt - Memorable events

MIT Mystery Hunt - Be noisy. The 2002 Hunt was based on the game of Monopoly; each round consisted of puzzles whose answers referred to a space on the Monopoly board, and by collecting these spaces, teams could form Monopolies and eventually gain access to additional "house" puzzles, as well as the "hotels", which were metapuzzles. After completing all eight hotel puzzles, teams were informed that they were in "jail" and h ...

Mysteries: Encyclopedia II - Locked room mystery - Authors and works

One of the masters of the locked-room subgenre is John Dickson Carr. His novel The Hollow Man is considered by many to be the finest locked room mystery novel of all time—although Carr himself names Gaston Leroux's The Mystery of the Yellow Room as his favourite. The Hollow Man gives an explicatory recipe for crime writers. Chapter 17 of the book consists of a theoretical digression entitled "The Locked-Room Lecture". In it, Dr Gideon Fell (the detective) gives an extensive explanation of how the murderer is able to de ...

Any type of puzzle is fair game. There are regular crosswords, cryptic crosswords, logic puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, anagrams, connect-the-dots, ciphers, riddles, paint by numbers, and word searches. Mysteries: Encyclopedia II - The Da Vinci Code - The mystery within the mystery

Part of the advertising campaign for the novel was that the book itself held four codes, and that the reader who solved them would be given a prize. Several thousand people actually solved the codes, and one name was randomly chosen to be the winner. The prize was a trip to Paris. The solution to the mystery involved discovering that the book jacket conceals latitude and longitude coordinates, written in reverse. Adding one degree to the latitude coordinates gives the coordinates of the headquarters of the Central Intelligence Agency ...

Mysteries: Encyclopedia II - Osiris - Mystery religion

By the hellenic era, Greek awareness of Osiris had grown, and attempts had been made to merge greek philosophy, such as Platonism, and the cult of Osiris (especially the myth of his resurrection), resulting in a mystery religion. Gradually, this became more popular, and was exported to other parts of the greek sphere of influence. However, these mystery religions valued the change in wisdom, personality, and knowledge of fundamental truth, rather than the exact details of the acknowledged myths on which their teachings were superimposed. Thu ...

Mysteries: Encyclopedia II - Magical Mystery Tour - History of the project

After Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Paul McCartney wanted to create a film based upon the Beatles and their music. This film was to be unscripted; various "ordinary" people (including John Lennon's uncle Charlie Lennon) were to travel on a charabanc bus and have unspecified "magical" adventures, in the manner of Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters. The Magical Mystery Tour movie was made, but it turned out that no interesting adventures actually occurred. (At least, none that would have suited the original concept; during the ...

Mysteries: Encyclopedia II - Mystery Science Theater 3000 - History

Mystery Science Theater 3000 first aired on local TV in the Twin Cities on KTMA-TV, a UHF station (not a cable access channel, as is sometimes reported) from November 24, 1988 to May 1989. The station's declining fortunes forced it to cancel MST3K, but just as its run was ending, the creators used a short "best-of" reel to pitch the concept to executives at the Comedy Channel, a national cable channel that was then being created. It became one of the first two shows picked up by it. After one season there, Comedy Channel and ri ...
