In certain sects of Hinduism, Muhurta is the selection of an auspicious date and time for performing a work. In Vedic timekeeping, Muhurta is a unit of time equal to 2 ghadiyas, or approximately 48 minutes. An important muhurta is the Brahma muhurta, which is on the 25th Nadiya or approximately two hours before sunrise

muhurta: (Sanskrit) "Moment."
1)    A period of time.
2)    A certain division of a day or night.
-       Muhurtas vary slightly in length as the lengths of days and nights change through the year. There are at least three muhurta systems.
-       The first defines one muhurta as 1/8th of a day or night (= 1.5 hours in a 12-hour night),
-       the second as 1/15th of a day or night (= 48 minutes), and
-       the third as 1/16th of a day or night (= 45 minutes).
3)    Muhurta also refers to the astrological science of determining the most auspicious periods for specific activities.

brahma muhurta: (Sanskrit) "Time of God." A very favorable time for sadhana. It is traditional to arise before this period, bathe and begin one's morning worship. Brahma muhurta is defined as roughly 1.5 hours, the last muhurta of the night in the 8-muhurta system. It is understood as comprising the final three muhurtas of the night in 15 or 16-muhurta systems, equalling 144 minutes or 135 minutes respectively. See: muhurta.

The Value of Time in Meditation and Sadhna

Mediation requires that fifth house, Sun and Moon should be devoid of any blemishes and a fixed or sthira sign should be rising in the ascendant. The dasha lord should be finely placed and could have an association with fourth, eighth or twelfth house lord. A person performing the ritual should look for condition of Nakshatras and Muhurta for initiation. His atmakarka should not be debilitated or combust in transit and should be strong.
