Moxibustion - Theory and practice: Encyclopedia - Moxibustion

Moxibustion (Chinese: 灸; pinyin: jiŭ) is an oriental medicine therapy utilizing moxa, or mugwort herb. It plays an important role in the traditional medical systems of China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Tibet, and Mongolia. Suppliers usually age the mugwort and grind it up to a fluff; practitioners burn the fluff or process it further into a stick that resembles a (non-smokable) cigar. They can use it indirectly, with acupuncture needles, or sometimes burn it on a patient's skin. Moxibustion - Terminology. Th ...

Practitioners use moxa to warm regions and acupuncture points with the intention of stimulating circulation through the points and inducing a smoother flow of blood and qi. Scientific research has shown that mugwort acts as an emmenagogue, meaning that it stimulates blood-flow in the pelvic area and uterus. It is claimed that moxibustion militates against cold and dampness in the body and can supposedly serve to turn breech babies. Medical historians believe that moxibustion pre-dated acupuncture, and needling came to supplement moxa ...

Moxibustion - Theory and practice: Encyclopedia II - Moxibustion - Terminology

The word "moxa" comes from Japanese mogusa (艾) (the u is not very strongly enunciated). Yomogi (蓬) also serves as a synonym for moxa in Japan. Chinese uses the same character as mogusa, but pronounced differently: ài, also called àiróng (艾絨)(meaning "velvet of ài"). The Chinese character for moxa forms one half of the two making up the Chinese word that often gets tran ...

Moxibustion - Theory and practice: Encyclopedia - Practice

A Practice refers to a way that something is done. Practice is also something that is done with the deliberate aim of learning. Most commonly, practice is the act of repeating something over and over for the purpose of learning and gaining experience, as in the phrase "practice makes perfect". Playing a musical instrument well takes great practice, for example. In British English, the verb form of this is "to practise". The noun form everywhere, and the verb form in ...

Theory has a number of distinct meanings in different fields of knowledge, depending on the context and their methodologies. Theory - Etymology. The word ‘theory’ derives from the Greek ‘theorein’, which means ‘to look at’. According to some sources, it was used frequently in terms of ‘looking at’ a theatre stage, which may explain why sometimes the word ‘theory’ is used as something provisional or not completely resembling real. The term ‘theoria’ (a noun) was already used by ...

Moxibustion - Theory and practice: Encyclopedia - Choice theory

The term Choice Theory is closely associated with the work of Dr. William Glasser, MD, author of the book so named, and is the culmination of some 50 years of theory and practice in psychology and counseling. Choice theory is also a discipline of analyzing the mathematical nature of the choice behavior of economic agents in microeconomics. For choice theory in economics, see rational choice theory. Choice Theory posits that behavior is central to our existence and is driven by five genetically driven needs, similar to those of Maslow: Survival (food, clothing, sh ...

Moxibustion - Theory and practice: Encyclopedia - Chaos theory

In mathematics and physics, chaos theory deals with the behavior of certain nonlinear dynamic systems that under certain conditions exhibit a phenomenon known as chaos, which is characterised by a sensitivity to initial conditions (see butterfly effect). As a result of this sensitivity, the behavior of systems that exhibit chaos appears to be random, even though the model of the system is determ ...

Moxibustion - Theory and practice: Encyclopedia - Archaeological theory

Archaeological theory covers the debates over the practice of archaeology and the interpretation of archaeological results. There is no single theory of archaeology, and even definitions are disputed. Until the mid-20th century and the introduction of technology, there was a general consensus that archaeology was closely related to both history and anthropology. Since then, elements of other disciplines such as geology, physics, chemistry, biology, metallurgy, engineering, medicine, etc, have found an overlap, resulting in ...

Moxibustion - Theory and practice: Encyclopedia - Conspiracy theory

A conspiracy theory attempts to explain the cause of an event as a secret, and often deceptive, plot by a covert alliance rather than as an overt activity or natural occurrence. The term "conspiracy theory" is used by scholars and in popular culture to identify a type of folklore similar to an urban legend, having certain regular features, especially an explanatory narrative which is constructed with cert ...

Moxibustion - Theory and practice: Encyclopedia - Type theory

At the broadest level, type theory is the branch of mathematics and logic that concerns itself with classifying entities into collections called types. In this sense, it is related to the metaphysical notion of 'type'. Modern type theory was invented partly in response to Russell's paradox, and features prominently in Russell and Whitehead's Principia Mathematica. With the rise of powerful programmable computers, and the development of programming languages for the same, type theory has found practical application in the ...

Moxibustion - Theory and practice: Encyclopedia - Sati practice

The practice of sati (or suttee[1]) was a funeral custom in which the widow immolated herself alive on her husband’s funeral pyre. The term is derived from the original name of a goddess (see article on Dakshayani), who immolated herself, unable to bear the humiliation of her (living) husband. The term may also be used to refer to the widow herself. The term sati is now sometimes interpreted as 'chaste woman'. Including:

Moxibustion - Theory and practice: Encyclopedia - Germ theory of disease

The germ theory of disease, also called the pathogenic theory of medicine, is a theory that proposes that microorganisms are the cause of many diseases. Although highly controversial when first proposed, it is now a cornerstone of modern medicine and clinical microbiology, leading to such important innovations as antibiotics and hygienic practices. Germ theory of disease - Historical view of disease. The historical view is that disease was spontaneously generated instead of being created by microorganisms w ...

Moxibustion - Theory and practice: Encyclopedia - Information theory

Information theory is the mathematical theory of data communication and storage, generally considered to have been founded in 1948 by Claude E. Shannon. The central paradigm of classic information theory is the engineering problem of the transmission of information over a noisy channel. The most fundamental results of this theory are Shannon's source coding theorem, which establishes that on average the number of bits needed to communicate the result of an uncertain event is given by the entropy of that uncertainty; and ...

Moxibustion - Theory and practice: Encyclopedia - Common practice period

In music the common practice period is a long period in western musical history spanning from before the classical era proper to today, dated, on the outside, as 1600-1900. It is most commonly contrasted with contemporary music. Common practice music shares many traits and is tonal as opposed to modal or atonal and includes most of classical and popular music. Despite the emergence of many new styles and techniques common practice music may still be the most common European influenced music. Walter Piston, among others, uses the term in his book Harmony (ISBN 03939548 ...

Moxibustion - Theory and practice: Encyclopedia - Consensus theory of truth

The label consensus theory of truth is currently attached to a number of otherwise very diverse philosophical perspectives. This makes it reasonable to ask whether there is any such thing as the consensus theory of truth at all, in other words, whether there is any one single principle that the various approaches have in common, or whether the phrase is being used as a catch-all for a motley assortment of barely related positions. In short, when it comes to what a consensus theory of truth is, or o ...

Moxibustion - Theory and practice: Encyclopedia - Critical theory

In the humanities and social sciences, critical theory has two quite different meanings with different origins and histories, one originating in social theory and the other in literary criticism. Though until recently these two meanings had little to do with each other, since the 1970s there has been some overlap between these disciplines. This has led to "critical theory" becoming an umbrella term for an array of theories within academia. This article focuses primarily on the differences and similarities between them. C ...

Moxibustion - Theory and practice: Encyclopedia II - Dependency theory - Practical Failure

While dependency theory as a purely theoretical approach to global economics still exists, to date, all attempts to use the theory to find a practical solution within its framework have failed. The reasons include, but are not limited to: Corruption. State-owned industries tend to have a much higher rate of corruption than privately-owned companies. Lack of competition. By subsidizing in-country industries and preventing outside imports, these companies have no incentive to improve their products, to try and become more efficient in their processes, to p ...
