Moses: Encyclopedia II - Moses - The horned Moses
Due to a statement towards the end of the book of Exodus (at 34:29-35), in which Moses is depicted as having been disfigured due to his direct encounter with God, various traditions grew up as to what the disfigurement was. Jonathan Kirsch, in his book Moses: A Life, thought that, since Moses subsequently had to wear a veil to hide it, the disfigurement was a sort of "divine radiation burn". There is one longstanding and possibly pagan tradition that Moses grew horns. This is derived from a mistranslation of the Hebrew p ...

Moses: Encyclopedia II - Moses - Moses in Christianity

For Christians, Moses – mentioned more often in the New Testament than any other Old Testament figure – is often a symbol of the contrast between traditional Judaism and the teachings of Jesus. New Testament writers often made comparison of Jesus' words and deeds with Moses' in order to explain Jesus' mission. In the book of Acts, for example, the rejection of Moses by the Jews when they worshipped the golden calf is liken ...

Moses: Encyclopedia II - Moses - Moses in history

Also see the article on the Bible and history Most mainstream historians find links between the biblical Moses and the Exodus and historical Ancient Egypt as problematic and highly controversial. Due to the fact that the events that transpired in Egypt may have been written down centuries later, it is difficult to separate eyewitness testimonies from allegories and inaccuracies brought on by oral traditions. Descriptions of the Ancient Egypt in the Bible often contain accurate historical details, such as the description of the ...

Moses: Encyclopedia - Assumption of Moses

The Assumption of Moses (otherwise called the Testament of Moses) is a Jewish apocryphal pseudepigraphical work of uncertain date and authorship. It is known from a single 6th century manuscript in Latin that was discovered by Antonio Ceriani in the Ambrosian Library in Milan in the mid 19th century and published by him in 1861. Based on the literal translation of idioms within the text, it is generally accepted that the extant Latin version is a translation from Greek, with the Greek itself probably a translation ...

Moses: Encyclopedia - Book of Moses

The Book of Moses is a text published by Joseph Smith, Jr. and thought by many within Mormonism to be the translated writings of Moses. It is published today as part of the Pearl of Great Price. Book of Moses - Origin. In 1830, according to adherents of Mormonism, Joseph Smith was commanded by God to create a new "translation" of the Bible, in order to restore lost portions and correct mistranslations in the modern text. Moses: Encyclopedia - Blessing of Moses

The Blessing of Moses is a poem that appears in Deuteronomy at 33:2-27. According to the modern documentary hypothesis the poem was an originally separate text, that was inserted by the deuteronomist into the second edition (of 2), of the text which became Deuteronomy (i.e. was an addition in 'Dtr2'). The poem presents an opinion of the merits and attributes of each of the Tribes of Israel, and so can be compared with the Blessing of Jacob, which has the same theme. However, there is very little in common between the poems, exc ...

Moses: Encyclopedia - Moses de Leon

Rabbi Moses ben Shem-Tov de Leon (c. 1250-1305), also known simply as Moses de Leon, was a Spanish rabbi who is thought of as the composer the Zohar. It is a matter of controversy if the Zohar is his own work, or that he committed traditions going back to Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai in writing. He was born in León, Spain (hence his last name), and spent 30 years in Guadalajara before moving to Ávila, where he lived until his death. Other related archives1250, 1305, Guadalajara, Le

Moses: Encyclopedia - Zipporah at the inn

The tale of Zipporah at the inn, is one of the more unusual, curious, and much-debated, passages of the torah. When Moses and Zipporah reach an inn, the LORD met him, and sought to kill him. So he let him go: then she said, A bloody husband thou art, because of the circumcision -Exodus 24b-26 Zipporah at the inn - Interpretation. ...

Moses: Encyclopedia - Aaron ben Moses ben Asher

Aaron ben Moses ben Asher (10th century) developed the Tiberian system for writing down vowel sounds in Hebrew. For over a thousand years he has been regarded by Jews of all streams around the world as having produced the most accurate version of the masoretic text. Since his day, both handwritten manuscripts of the Tanakh and printed versions strove to emulate his achievement and continue to do so. He was descended from a long line of Masoretes, starting with someone called Asher, but nothing is known about them other than the ...

He was the elder son of Amram and Jochebed of the tribe of Levi; Moses, the other son, being three years younger, and Miriam, their sister, several years older (Exodus 2:4; Exodus 6:16 ff.; Numbers 33:39). Moses: New Age Spirituality Dictionary on Moses

Moses

(c. 1572 -1452 BC) Legendary founder of the Jewish religion and author of the first five books of the Bible (The Torah) (Thothmoses II - prince and high-priest of Egypt)

Moses simply means 'born of' in Egyptian, his native language. The name normally requires another name prefixed to it, such as Rameses (born of Ra) or Amenmosis (born of Amen)

It seems very likely that either Moses himself or some later scribe dropped the name of an Egyptian god from the front of his name. "

Moses: Encyclopedia II - Robert Moses - End of the Moses era

Moses's reputation began to wane in the 1960s, as people began to appreciate the virtues of neighborhoods and smallness of scale. Moses also started picking fights with the wrong people over the wrong issues. Moses's campaign against free Shakespeare in the Park received negative publicity; Moses' effort to destroy a shaded playground in Central Park to make a parking lot for the expensive Tavern-on-the-Green made him enemies ...

Moses: Encyclopedia II - Robert Moses - Caro

Moses' image suffered a further blow in 1974 with the publication of The Power Broker by Robert Caro. Caro's 1,200-page opus (edited from over 3,000 pages long) largely destroyed the remainder of Moses's reputation. Caro was deliberately intensely critical of Moses because, in 1974, there were many people who only knew the good Moses had done. Many people had come to see Moses as a bully who disregarded public input, but they had not known that he had stolen his brother's inheritance (in the 1930s, before Moses's rise to promin ...
