morning sickness: Encyclopedia II - Sweating sickness - Epidemics

Sweating Sickness first came to the attention of physicians at the very beginning of the reign of Henry VII. It was known, indeed, a few days after the landing of Henry at Milford Haven on the 7th August 1485, as there is clear evidence of its being spoken of before the Battle of Bosworth Field on the 22nd August. Soon after the arrival of Henry in London on the 28th August, it broke out in the capital and caused great mortality. This alarming malady soon became known as the sweating-sickness. It was regarded as being quite distinct from the ...

morning sickness: Encyclopedia II - Vomiting - Content

As the stomach secretes acid, vomit contains a high concentration of hydronium ions and is thus strongly acidic. The potential physiological complications associated with excessive vomiting are mainly metabolic alkalosis (increased blood pH), hypokalemia (potassium depletion) and hypochloremia (chlorine depletion). The hypokalemia is an indirect result of the kidney compensating for the loss of acid. The content of the vomitus (vomit) may be of medical interest. Fresh blood in the vomit is termed hematemesis ("blood vomiting"). ...

morning sickness: Encyclopedia II - Vomiting - Social implications

Vomiting - Nausea inducement in groups. It is quite common that when one person vomits, others nearby will become nauseated, particularly when smelling the vomit of others, often to the point of vomiting themselves. It is believed that this is an evolved trait among primates. Many primates in the wild will tend to browse for food in small groups. Should one member of the party react adversely to some ingested food it may be advantageous (in a survival sense) for other members of the party also to vomit. This tend ...

The term was originally coined in 1678 by Jean-Jacques Harder (1656-1711), Swiss physician (or in 1688 by Johannes Hofer (1669-1752), from Greek (νόστος = nostos = one's homeland, άλγος = algos = pain/longing) roots, to refer to "the pain a sick person feels because he is not in his native land, or fears never to see it again". This neologism was so successful that people forgot its origin. Moreover, its original meaning--referring to a serious medical disorder--has been lost as the word ...

The -etics ending appears to have been inspired by cybernetics, a popular vogue idea at the time (indeed, Hubbard explicitly made this connection in a 1949/1950 magazine article [2]). Hubbard's meaning might thu ...
